The stress and strain of life's obstacles sometimes take us off course. Rivers have always seemed to play a major role in religion. The bible says Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist at the Jordan river, and as Jesus prayed, the Heavens opened. In the Hindu religion they believe in seven sacred rivers; the Hindus believe bathing in the Ganges river will cleanse them of their sins. I felt it was essential to illustrate a stable boat in my river of spirituality drawing. I believe our spiritual journey leads most of us on an array of river paths. Some rivers have clear skies with rocks along the way; other streams supply jagged lightning. My grandmother used to say to me, “Isaiah, your life is going to flash before your eyes.” I was close to my grandmother throughout my childhood. At the age of eight my teacher instructed me to write a story about my favorite person, I remember the project requirements like it was yesterday. I went to the stationery store with my grandmother and she purchased red construction paper. I had the entire weekend to create the story; it was a difficult decision for me to make, it was the first time I ever had to choose among my family members. I weighed the pros and cons of memories I had with all of my relatives and it narrowed down to my grandmother. I created a two column layout, I drew my grandmother and myself on the left side and I wrote the story on the right side. On Monday morning I woke up one hour earlier than I normally do. I was excited to present my story to my classmates. My teacher liked the story, although a few of my classmates did not understand why I did not choose my mother instead. I believe Sue Bender realized how simple it was to acknowledge the existence of God in the same way I did: by simply analyzing what we have and being grateful for it. At the age of seventeen I began to lead my life without regretting my past mistakes. I also began to appreciate all of the blessings that were given to me throughout my life. My new positive attitude allowed me to officially reach spiritual fulfillment. As the song goes by Jimmy Cliff, “ I can see clearly now the rain is gone.” My journey was clear to me, before I reached adulthood; I controlled the weather forecast of my life, I did not need a meteorologist. I understood I may always face rocks, eddies and waterfalls along the way but I have the ability to survive those events and continue to row toward sunny weather.
It pleases me in some curious way that the river does not exist, and that I have it. In me it still is, and will be until I die, green, rocky, deep, fast, slow. and beautiful beyond reality. The river underlies.everything that I. do. It is a good idea.
Me and Christina were taking in the same nursing program. A month or so of knowing her I decided I'd find find out if she had known Mary. The Souls of Black Folk are a collection of essays composed by W.E.B Du Bois’ highlighting the problems that the African-American race faced in American society. Du Bois describes the feeling of being “shut out from the[ir] world by a vast veil” (4). The veil is a metaphor that Du Bois presents representing a symbolic wall that separates the “whites” and “blacks”. To Du Bois, the veil emphasises the racial boundaries that the African-Americans faced, as well as their invisibility within society in U.S history. Spiritual formation is a process that morphs as we grow and change. There is no one singular correct path this type of journey takes because each journey is as individual as the person who is experiencing it. Most obvious, the journey will be different from those who identify as religious and those who do not and will diversify with in each category. For example, the spiritual journey a Buddhist takes will be different from that of a believer in Judaism or Christianity. In fact, the journey will continue to diversify between Christians, male and female, age groups, even by demographic location. Consequently, the spiritual formation process is as diverse as it is intricate and we may never be able to discover all the journey options. Although individuals may not actively recognize they are experiencing spiritual formation it is a process that affects all. Because it is in human nature to question, learn, grow, and act, everyone to a certain extent is exposed to a unique spiritual formation journey.
In October of 2009, I had what some would call a spiritual transformation. For me, it was merely a switch in beliefs. Until that time I grew up never fearing the God, I always heard of and for several years prior to my switch I was staunchly an atheist in belief and practice. Though, I am not going to tell you exactly what occurred to make that switch but what I would like to tell you is my journey as a professed Christian, after my switch. My fight through religious error and the way out of it is a blessing I can only give credit to Gods Word for doing so. God’s Word is the only source of truth to be used in spite of the traditions of men, and it has led me to be saved in Christ. With that said I will proudly tell you the best gift I ever received and still do to this day is salvation; however, it had taken a thorough search in truth, a response of obedience, and God’s grace to receive it.
It seemed like a normal day when I entered Mrs. A’s AP Language and Composition class, but little did I know that she was going to assign a very important project that was going to take forever. I took my seat and wrote down what was on the board. Then I sat patiently and waited for Mrs. A to come explain what we were doing today. When the tardy bell rang, Mrs. A glided into the room and gave us all a stack of papers. She then proceeded to discuss our upcoming assignment, a memoir. As she explained the very important assignment, I wondered whom I would write about. No one really came to mind to write about and I thought for sure I would never be able to get this thing done on time. I finally decided that I would write in on my mother, Kari Jenson. I knew I would probably put the project off until the very end and do it the weekend before even though it would get on my mom’s nerves. Putting work off was just how I did everything, it worked for me. When I arrived home from school that day, I told mom about the project. I told her I would most likely write it about her and she was overjoyed.
As a student in the Bible Teaching Principles class reflecting on what it means to be a Bible teacher, my focus since Saturday’s activity has changed. Coming into this class, my focus was definitely on the teaching aspect. However, while learning to become an effective teacher is certainly a valuable and worthwhile study, my focus since Saturday has shifted from the teaching aspect, to now the Word of God in my life as a teacher. Since Saturday’s activity, I have realized just how important my relationship with Christ is if I am to be an effective teacher. It was on a Friday morning at 4:30 A.M. that happiness and joy filled the hearts of both my parents. I was born on November 29, 1996 at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale Florida. My parents had five children, and among the five children that they had, I was the third (or middle) child from them. It started off as two boys, then I came along as the first girl, after it was another boy, then finally, another baby girl; so total was three boys and two girls. The way that my parents lived and treated each other was the same as if any other married couple that loved each other so much. They’ve gone through a lot to get to where they are now today, but they made it and along the way had us five children. They have been really strong with each other which made them only have the five of us and no other step children. My mom is a great cook and enjoy cooking for us; this is probably where my passion for culinary comes from. My dad is an amazing tailor, he is very good at making our clothes, and my passion for fashion probably came from him. My dad is also a teacher, one of the best math teacher I know, he is passionate about his job and his family is the center of his universe. As usual I woke up to the sound of my father pounding on my bedroom door, hollering, “Get up! Get on your feet!
