Biological When I was growing up I didn’t get sick that often, but in tenth grade I got mono which kept me from going to school for about two months. This is one of the biological factors that affected me. By missing that much school I was about a semester behind, which took me the rest of my high school career to make up for. This could have been something that was seen as a negative biological affect, but I think that the fact that I had to work twice as hard to catch up was more positive than negative. By having to do twice as much work as I normally would, I developed a very good work ethic. Another biological factor that had an influence on my life was during my senior year. My mom got a tumor on her spine from a staph infection and was hospitalized for the last half of the school year. Even though I was not the one who was in the hospital, it still had a big influence on my life during that portion of the year. The stress and pressure of school was a lot to handle at the time, and my mom being sick just added to the stress and pressure. The positive side of this is that my mom was healthy enough to be out of the hospital by my graduation. Psychological There have been many psychological factors in my life so far that have had an effect on me. In eighth grade my parents got divorced which was very life changing. At the time of the divorce I didn’t realize how many things change when two people a get divorced. I have a very small and close family, which made the absence of one person very noticeable at family functions. During the year of my parents’ divorce my grandma died. This was yet another psychological factor that affected me that year. I switched to the Willmar school district when I was in tenth grade. In the Willmar school district there was a lot of many different ethnic groups and races. This was a much different demographic than that of the New London-Spicer school district, and it was very refreshing to me. I enjoyed the Willmar school district much more than the New-London Spicer school district, because by being around so many different kinds of people I feel like I have a better understanding of the different types of cultures that people have. I believe that if I were to have stayed at the New-London-Spicer school district I would not have been able to learn about the types of communities or the challenges that other races and ethnic groups.
When I was a young girl, my older brother always did very well in school and he and the rest of our family were always very proud of his work. As I grew older and noticed all of my brother’s achievements I decided that I wanted to not only achieve what he had, but to also achieve things that he had not. Because of this strive to reach and surpass the standards that my brother had set, I developed into a person with great determination. Throughout my life I have always set goals for myself and then did everything I could in order to meet those goals. I grew up across the street from two high schools. One of them, Fiorello Laguardia High School, is a special admissions public school for students who are gifted in the performing or visual arts. The student population at Laguardia is relatively diverse with students of all races attending, although the majority of the students, as at all of the NYC special admissions high schools, is white and Asian. The other high school, Martin Luther King jr. High School is a "regular" public high school. The population is almost entirely African American and Hispanic with a very small minority of Asian students.
I believe schools are a reflection of their communities. Our schools are no longer segregated due the US Supreme court decision handed down in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. However, a schools makeup is similar to the communities they serve. A majority white school belongs in a majority white community. A diverse community such in large cities like New York will have diverse student body in their schools. Schools in the United States have been desegregated for over a half-century or have they. A film called “Little Rock Central- 50 Years Later” says differently. Little Rock Central is the famous high school where the Little Rock Nine students went to school. The school was forced by the federal government to desegregate. This film now captures this same high school fifty years later and finds a new type of segregation. The new type of segregation is now about social economic class and academic class.
In some communities, charter schools have a higher concentration of minority students than traditional public schools. In addition, they also accept students with special needs and learning disabilities. When I attended Harding, I definitely noticed the diversity that was occurring there that I did not notice at the other public schools. This is due to the small population of the school as well as the diversity of the school. Whenever I needed help on anything I knew that I could depend on the teachers and faculty because they were always available and knew every student by name.
My childhood was somewhat gloomy due to an alcoholic father; verbal and physical abuse was part of my upbringing. An event that I remember that shaped my life was when I failed the first grade. As a child I could perceive it, and these events helped to reinforce and mold future behaviors. During my teenage years I had much difficulty with love relationships even at times having inferiority complex after a breakup.

Individuals’ life and personal experiences play an important role in one’s development. As a matter of fact, the path from infancy to adulthood can be shaped by many factors that happen during the individual’s life. According to Drewery and Claiborne (2010), human development is an area of study that seeks to analyse and understand how ongoing changes affect people’s life and their development. There are many theories around human development, yet all of them share the notion that there are several universal stages that take place in every individual’s development: childhood, adolescence and adulthood (Drewery & Claiborne, 2010). This current essay aims to explore and analyse one of the three life stages that characterised human development:
It had come to the attention of my family that I had some sort of psychological problem and something had to be done. I was always labeled as a shy and quiet kid, and like my family I had thought nothing more of my behavior. However, now it had become something more obvious. I had told my parents the kinds of problems I was having. Basically I didn't want to talk to anyone or to be anywhere near anyone I didn't know. I didn't really want to leave my house for any reason for fear that I might have to talk to someone. I was so critical and scrutinizing in relation to myself that I couldn't even enter into a conversation. Everyone seems to have a part of themselves that lends itself to thoughts of pessimism and failure, but mine was something that was in the forefront of my mind at all times. Something telling me that everything I did was a failure, and that anything I ever did would not succeed. Through discussion with my family it was decided that I should move out of my parents house to a place where I could find treatment and get a job. I was to reside with my sister Lisa, her partner Brynn, and their Saint Bernard in Greensboro.
For example, when my mother and my father were separated, this influence their behavior towards each other as well as my own behavior towards both parents. Despite the fact that I was still very young, I knew what was happening and this event certainly affected my life.
This can be one way I make myself more vulnerable to illness. In the same study, supporting the fact that illness occurred more with procrastination, the student’s positive attitudes turned into colds, back pain, headaches, allergies, and sleeping issues (Olson 20-21). These effects are unhealthy, so much so that their lagging could get worse due to their health conditions. If they get little sleep or feel like they are hurting, they will want to sleep to ‘do it tomorrow’ when they are energized or healthy. This will lead to more stress as the deadline for their assignment gets closer, leading to more feelings of illness.
My life experiment was to learn and memorize 5 new signs a day. Along with learning new signs, once a week I did a worksheet from a workbook I got for Christmas. After getting sign language flashcards, workbooks, and a sign language dictionary, I was and still am feeling motivated to learn five new signs a day. This was my choice for my life experiment because in college I want to major in Communication Sciences and Disorders, to eventually become a Speech Pathologist. A Speech Pathologist helps either kids or adults who have a difficulty in their speech which, in some cases, means working with patients that are hard of hearing. Learning Sign Language is essential in becoming my dream career.
Before talking about what goes on inside the schools, I'd like to mention the district itself. There will be no alternative school choices, bussing, or deliberate desegregation practices. Each school will be remarkably similar to the others in the district so that every child may receive a similar education regardless of the neighborhood they live in. When students are separated to different schools for any reason (academic talent, wealth, interests, race, gender) they fail to interact with different types of people that they will undoubtedly encounter in the "real" adult world. In addition, I feel that is very important for children from the same neighborhood to attend the same school in order to increase a sense of community. Finally, as the Case Study of Boulder Valley points out, school choice takes valuable resources away from teaching and places them in school competition (Howe 144).
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
I have a very fulfilling feeling about what I have been able to accomplish in my life so far. I want the absolute best for myself and those close to me. I often go above and beyond to help those around me succeed and be the best version of themselves that they can possibly be.
I cannot image relocating to a different neighborhood environment and adjust to a new setting. If my parents had decided to relocate and be raised in a different neighborhood environment, it would have made such a big impact on my life and who I today. My neighborhood made me who I am as a person physically, financially and emotionally. Being able to connect with different nationalities such as Haitians, whites, African Americans and Hispanic also having the privilege of learning their cultures also taught me at a young age that you should not have to discriminate one another just because you are different from one another. As far as in many different other neighborhoods they like to segregate by nationally and stay within their culture.
