Everyone has a different view on what they think leadership is to them. Leadership to me is being able to guide people in a certain direction to reach a common goal. That person should know how to make sure everyone is involved in a process and that things run smoothly. According to The Student Leadership Challenge, Leadership is modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Throughout my whole life, my mom and dad have always tried to push me to be my own person and to take control. I tried very hard to listen to them, but most times I found myself following the path made by others. I’m not the type of person to take control for fear that I may hurt someone’s feelings or make anyone upset. A person can’t be a leader if they don’t have any followers. There are some people, who are natural leaders, but not everyone is cut out to be a leader; And deciding whether you’re a leader or a follower, only you can pick.
In my leadership class we had to take a strength finder test and write a paper on what we found. My top five strengths that I received after taking it was optimism, integrity, teamwork, faith, and salesmanship. My bottom weakness that I need to work on is self-motivation. When I took this quiz I thought that it wasn’t going to be very accurate because most quizzes like that online aren’t, but it actually hit the nail on the head!
I believe that I can help everyone stay positive about things in our perspective class and that I will be able to work with anyone. My personal leadership philosophy would be to be all you can be. As long as you give things one hundred percent, you can’t be mad at yourself. Being a leader is a lot of responsibility, but anyone is capable of being one. As we read that leadership book in class, it really opened my eyes to all of the qualities a leader must possess in order to be a successful one. I just hope that one day, I will no longer be a follower, but a strong leader.

The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership.
Throughout the novel, The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for Exemplary Leaders, authors James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner share with young student leaders the skills they have found for effective leadership. The authors wrote The Student Leadership Challenge hoping to strengthen the abilities and uplift the spirits of leaders by introducing the five principles: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart (Kouzes and Posner 3).

In my own experience leadership is not just about one person telling others what to do; it’s about more than just giving orders. It is about getting a group of people to work together towards a common goal with more than just the goal in mind. It is also not just about setting goals for the group but also setting personal goals for the individual, guiding and supporting them all
Leaders should lead by example. What a leader does and how they do it, serves as an example for others to follow. A leader’s behavior and actions are an important and effective way to influence the behavior of the people the lead. Leaders must treat other with dignity and respect. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.
Before I took the test I had wrote down what I thought were my strengths and weaknesses. My strengths were Hard working, Organized, strong believer and my weaknesses were impatient, not good at remembering important dates, and procrastination.
For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
I believe that leadership is something that should be earned. Whoever is the most qualified and passionate should be the person who leads, not the most popular. I believe that having integrity and expecting it at all times from your team is the best way to operate. I believe that leaders cannot always be the “good guys” in every situation. I believe that it is important to find people who will help you most achieve your goal, but ones who are loyal, passionate, and want to grow personally. Mutual respect in any situation will allow for people to speak their minds, even if it is difficult. This was a very neat quiz. I have five greatest strengths that describe me day to day. The one that stuck out to me is Positivity - which means that I am an upbeat person and I can get people excited about anything that comes our way. The strength finder said that I typically go out of your way to tell your coworkers how much you value their contributions, talents, ideas, and successes (www.strengthsquest.com). I am Pre-K teacher assistant Monday-Friday. Working for the school district can be very hard most of the time. You have to go in prayed up and have your war clothes on or you will go crazy. Most of us, as individuals, make conscious decisions every day, which impact the way we live our lives. Based on the information we have obtained we make the best choice possible for ourselves, we develop a philosophy regarding that certain subject. For example, some may live by the philosophy of eating only organic foods. Other may have a philosophy regarding politics, and some may just adopt existing philosophies regarding the subject they are interested in. The following is a personal philosophy of leadership. This philosophy of leadership is not intended to be a “one size fits all”; it is a personal creation of beliefs, knowledge, and real-life experiences.
There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. During my first weeks of college I was given the task of taking a quiz that helps me determines my strengths that will help succeed in my college career and beyond. The online quiz assesses you talents and strengths with which you can develop by reading the book ,Strengths Quest, which explains your abilities. The quiz takes thirty minutes to ask about various topics that determine your top five strengths or “themes of talent”. When I first read the synapsis on the back of the book I was skeptical about the accuracy of the quiz’s ability to determine what I’m like based on one hundred and thirty questions. Once I finished the test I still questioned the truth behind the results, until I read the book. I believe that Strengths Quest is a helpful tool that will help me through my college career. The test determined that my personal talents were: adaptability, learner, input, relator, and intellection. Each attribute is presented in the order of the strongest to the weakest. I feel as though the strengths are accurate because I see the similarities between them and my personality.
Throughout my life, my experiences and role models have shaped my understanding of leadership. I believe leadership is responsibly guiding and motivating others to use both my strengths and their own to obtain success. My personal leadership philosophy is guided by my core values of my family, relationships, loyalty, harmony, and responsibility. My ever-changing definition of philosophy helps my leadership and decision making routinely. New experience’s and external forces effect my translation of leadership daily which, in turn, helps shape me into a successful leader.
Through the self-assessment instruments utilized in this program, I have gained wealth of knowledge about my strengths, and weaknesses and how they affect my personal and professional life. By using different exercises, I recognized new strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, I identified ways to develop my strengths and overcome my weaknesses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) identified some of my strengths as the ability to get things done, initiating, and taking risks (Kolb, 2007). In the Strongest Self Feedback Exercise, some of the feedback listed my strengths as having excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being self-confident, a fast learner, determined, hardworking, and an awesome listener (Drucker, 2005).
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
