“To teach is to touch lives forever.” Erin Gruwell is an inspirational teacher that set an example of how a teacher should teach. She put her students first. So often teachers get so caught up in the standards and TEKS that the reason they became teachers in the first place is forgotten. The reason people go into teaching is because they have a passion for children and the reason teachers succeed is because they never forget that passion.
In an individual life according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the ultimate accomplishment is self-actualization. Self-actualization is maximizing ones potential. It is very difficult for a person to reach their full potential, but Erin Gruwell did. She reached beyond what was expected and decided she would succeed no matter what. Erin Gruwell refused failure, and in addition to living up to her potential, she also refused to allow her students to do any less than their potential.
Maria Reyes was a student and a freedom writer. The average high school student will sadly never have the passionate fire lit under them like Maria Reyes did. Erin Gruwe...
Erin Gruwell made such a powerful impact on her students, they wanted to stay with her through their junior and senior years. Some teachers were reluctant and felt that Erin Gruwell wasn’t qualified and wasn’t there long enough to teach juniors
Abraham Harold Maslow was a psychologist who tried to explain human needs, with the help of a hierarchy system. At the bottom of the “Needs Pyramid” are the psychological needs, this needs must be fulfilled to get a chance to comply all the other, less necessary, but still important, needs. Maslow said that “Self-Actualization” is on the top of the “Needs Hierarchy” for most people.
more fully on developing our personal potential which leads to self-actualisation. Maslow found that ‘peak experiences’ (moments of high excitement, deep meaning etc) were times of in...
Ever since I was a little girl I had this dream of being a teacher. Whether it was making up “pretend” tests or having my younger brother sit through my instruction, I knew that I was a born teacher. And now that I have grown and matured into a responsible young woman, I feel that my place in this world is in the classroom. I feel that the children are our future and we should teach them everything we know to the best of our abilities. Every summer since the age of 13, I have been babysitting for local families in my small hometown of Pineville. In fact, 2 years ago I had been babysitting for a Optometrist and his wife and they were expecting their second child. As an honor, they asked if they could name their second daughter after me. Kara Nicole was born in June of 2001. As a matter of fact, I have found that my feelings on education often reflect the song The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston. She states in her song that she feels that the children are our future and I must say that I agree completely with her sentiments on the education of our youth. When I came of age to enter college, there was no question in my mind as to what field I wanted to enter. Elementary education was the only option for me. One of my favorite quotes, although I do not know the author, says that “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world” and I must say that this reflects my philosophy on education. To me, this quote reveals every compassionate thought I have on education alone. Teachers in some small way or another can be the sunshine in a child’s life. In my opinion, teachers, play many roles; mentors, confidants, sources of inspiration, and disciplin...
In Maslow’s self-actualization concept, we, humans, seek to fulfill our potential. According to Maslow, self-actualization is the ultimate psychological need that arises after the basic physical and psychological needs are met and self-esteem is achieved.
In a world today where information is at a student’s fingertips it’s still so surprising how little students know about the world around them. It is my professional goal to use my Secondary Education, Social Studies Broad Field degree to become a High School Global Studies teacher with a creative twist. When my future students leave my classroom, I want them to have not only a greater understanding of the world events and cultures at large, but also have a great appreciation of the community culture that surrounds them.
Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. For this reason, I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of Business and Leadership at Marylhurst University. I want to pursue a well-rounded education at this established university where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader in our family business.
As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
A teacher is not what I have always wanted to be. As a matter of fact, it wasn't until I had taken several of my general studies classes that I made a commitment to teach. Having played football through middle school and high school, I just assumed that whatever I did would have to be related to football. It was, however, during a time of reflection that I thought about a former football coach and the rapport that he had with me and other players. He wanted to bring out the best in each of us. It was then that I realized that I wanted to do the same.
In this essay I will be discussing Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I will unveil my understanding of the five stages as well as how I currently fulfill certain levels, and how I will continue to fulfill them through my career after graduation. After I cover all of Maslow’s levels I will explain how and why my future job is related to my self-actualization. Next, I will reflect on past events and people that have helped shape me and get me to the place I am now. To conclude this essay, I will summarize my writing and reflect on what I have learned about myself
As we as humans grow that need becomes deeply engrained in our beings. This creates the need for outlets for achievement, ways to reach the goals we set. Yet while working towards these goals some may fall back into mediocrity but only for a time because all humans have the desire to move forward. If one is to achieve self actualization it may take a full life time for that person to reach their full potential, but they will constantly strive for that final goal. We must constantly invent ourselves and ways of relating to the world as we progress through life (Rathus 2012, p.9). Every day we are striving to become what we are capable of being. Humanity will continue to strive towards this goal for as Maslow stated, that self actualization is an important of a need in humans as hunger (Rathus 2012, p.
I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. The two main reasons that I have chosen to become a teacher is that I believe that teaching is extremely personally rewarding in many ways and the fact that I can actively make a difference in someone’s life.
...solutions to problems in the world , mostly these individuals are motivated by sense of personal ethics and responsibility. Solitude and autonomy is anther characteristic of self- actualized individuals the need for privacy and independence, while they take pleasure in developing their own potential. Self –actualized individuals tend to view the world with appreciations and their experiences become source of pleasure and inspiration of wonder. Lastly, self-actualized individuals often have peak experiences, which are moments of wonder, joy, and bliss, after these experiences people feel strengthened, inspired, and transformed. Maslow hoped that his efforts at describing the self-actualizing individual would eventually lead to a “periodic table” of the kinds of qualities, problems, pathologies, and characteristic of higher levels of human potential ( Rowan, 1998).
My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths. Education is for everyone and it’s a right by low for all; teachers, on the other hand, should do their jobs very honestly and effectively.
In today's constantly changing world, our children and youth need to learn inquiry-based, problem solving skills to that they may become successful members of society and live productive lives.
