My Father

It was a cold winter’s night when I heard a loud knock on my door. My father who was an accountant was still awake working on some left over work from the previous day. I was able to sneak down the long dark hall way and peek around the corner and down the stairs just in time to see him answer the door. I was unable to make out the dark shadow that stood in the door way for the porch light was about to die flickering on and off like it was ill. I listened closely as my father talked to this mysterious person both had hushed voices. Where they just being polite to the people still asleep in the house or was there something more to what I had originally thought was going on. All of a sudden my father stepped back and let the strange figure in. He wore a long trench coat and a wide brimmed hat that covered his face; in his left hand he carried a black brief case. Curious I crept down the stairs trying ever so hard to not step on a wrong part of the stairs that would make a creek from the winter cold and give me away. I walked ever so gently towards my father’s office where I hid behind a large potted plant that would shield me if either of the men walked out to get something. My father had left the door cracked open just enough that I was able to see the back of the man’s neck. He had a strange figure or emblem on the back of his neck I couldn’t quite make out what it was. It was strange almost demented as I stared at it I had realized I had seen it somewhere before, But where? As I sat there searching my mind for the answer I realized it was the 21st century and I could easily take a picture of it with my phone and search the web. as I started to dig about in my pockets I realized I must have left it up stairs not wanting to get cau... ... middle of paper ... ... And just like that I was awake. My hearing was the first thing to come back to me I was able to make out faint beeping noises and then my mother and fathers voice. “Tom she’s moving get the nurse” and then I opened my eyes to see a blank room my mother was sitting next to me crying but smiling at the same time. I had tubes coming from my arms and I felt like my head was on fire. I had a bracelet on with all my information on it. It said that the hospitals name was Road Island memorial hospital. Scared and confused I asked my mother what had happened to me. She told me I had been in a comma for the last two months after getting into a serious car accident. Still weary of what had been my reality for so long I asked her what my father did for a living, she replied with a smile and said “you know what he does Dear, he’s been an math teacher for the past 25 years.”
