Dreams are what drive people; they create the world we are in. Sometimes it can take years before people realize what their dreams are. In the film Billy Elliot, directed by Stephen Daldry the audience gets to experience the road that Billy Elliot took takes order to achieve his goal. He may have had to take a different road before realizing his destiny; if it were not for the 1ballet coach, Mrs. Wilkinson, whom played a huge role in his path to discover his dream of becoming a ballet dancer.
If it were not for Mrs. Wilkinson, Billy would not have known the talent and passion he had for dancing ballet. Mrs. Wilkinson is an important character because she was the first one that introduces him to ballet. She is a mother, a wife, a coach, and the reason for the success of Billy. When Billy first saw Mrs. Wilkinson, she seemed cold and strict. But soon enough he discovered that she was a woman of determination. She did not judge but rather encouraged him, and his passion for ballet.
Mrs. Wilkinson was the motivation for his dancing career. She is very significant to the movie because she was the only adult that believed in him from the beginning. She did not tell him that ballet was for girls, or that he would never make it. In fact she states that he has great potential that can take him far. She is the reason that this film was able to move forward. This motherly role is very effective because in everyone’s life, there has been that one person that was always there, and that pushed them to be better all the time. This is what the ballet teacher does.
As the audience watches the film they can come to realize that sometimes people need to open their eyes to new ideas. They become aware that one person can make a difference in another person’s life. This film is about that, changing your life. Billy Elliot would not have ever thought to become a dancer, yet is willing to take the risk and he discovers that he loves it. The audience can connect to the main character because they understand that sometimes risks have to be taken. Mrs. Wilkinson shows that it is okay to change and do something different.
This character changes as soon as she starts to realize that Billy will be going off to the ballet school.
