Technology is changing everything around us including our sports. With modern technology now, we can implement it into our professional sports to make the games fair. Instant replay is the most important luxury in our sports today. It allows officials and the fans to look back at the recent play and decide if the correct call was made. Not all sports have implemented it into its rules yet. The commissioners of America’s favorite sports are discussing the rules of instant replay and are including the use of it into the sports. Opponents of instant replay say that baseball already takes long enough and all that instant replay will do is make the event longer than it should be. Officials who are looking at these replays do not take very long to find the right call that should be made instead of calling the wrong call. Another reason that people oppose of instant replays is that it takes away human error from the game. There is no need for officiating if there is a video monitor that can see everything. Human error is a part of history in some sports like baseball. But with instant replays there does not have to be human error anymore and there should not be any more missed calls. “On September 7th, 1986, instant replay was used for the first time in an NFL regular-season game” (Dudko). The use of instant replay in the National Football League helps officials determine where the ball on the field is located. The referees are not one hundred percent accurate at placing the ball at the correct spot of where the runner is down. Therefore using replays can figure out the right spot. Instant replays also help referees make the correct call on the field to see if wide receivers make legal catches. In super bowl XLIII Santonio Holmes makes a historic catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the game. To be a catch the wide receiver needed to have two feet in bounds with control of the football. The referees clearly made an educated guess because the play happened so fast that they could not tell the right call on the field for sure. With the use of instant replay the officials concluded that the receiver was in fact inbounds with control of the football which made Santonio Holmes score a touchdown and win the game for his team. Without instant replay the officials could have never truly made the right call and the outcome of the game could have changed dramatically.
