Modern management was greatly influenced by researchers such as: Adam Smith, Frederick Taylor, Elton Mayo, Abraham Manslow, Douglas McGregor and Rensin Likert. There are many different management approaches today and they all have evolved from the styles of the past. During my research of these individuals I learned how each of them played an important role in molding of modern management styles. I will describe in detail how each of these great researchers contributed to modern day management styles. Let’s get started with Adam Smith and his second coming. Adam smith was one of the greatest economics minds that have ever existed, teaching us that our wealth is not just in gold and silver but in the products that we produce and commerce we engage in! Much like today we can understand the idea of Gross National Product and how we can better adjust our habits and ourselves. Smith unlike most economists of that age understood the value in hard work and social aspect behind our decisions.
In my understanding, management has had only to do with preserving the current status of thing so that today’s methods of production are upheld even tomorrow. The process of managing things. However, as Deming and Lee point out, management and leadership must be innovative enough to look into the future and examine if today’s methods will be relevant tomorrow to yield even more results. Effective management and leadership calls for flexibility to ensure that changes are welcomed and any adjustments deemed necessary are taken into consideration so as not to miss out on any opportunity
Management Theorists such as F.W Taylor created the concept of scientific management, which is made up of six key aspects including observation, experiment, standardisation, selection and training, payment by results and co-operation. Despite some facets of his theory becoming outdated, scientific management can still be seen in the some way in current business structures. For example within Virgin, despite its reputation for having a relaxed working environment, some aspects of scientific management are used. Such as the selection and training and payment by results, with certain employees being offered rewards for showing ambition to set up their own businesses and showing signs of creative thinking.
Adam Smith is widely regarded as the father of modern economics and one of the greatest economists throughout the course of history. He is mainly famous for two books that he wrote, these two books are considered the base and infrastructure of the world of economics. The two books he wrote were, “The Theory of Moral Sentimental” and “The Wealth of Nations”. But although Adam Smith was such a great economic philosopher, he wasn’t a very good forecaster or future predictor. The economic scenario now is very different from the economic landscape of the 1700’s.

Fordism and Scientific Management are terms used to describe management that had application to practical situations with extremely dramatic effects. Fordism takes its name from the mass production units of Henry Ford, and is identified by an involved technical division of labour within companies and their production units. Other characteristics of Fordism include strong hierarchical control, with workers in a production line often restricted to the one single task, usually specialised and unskilled. Scientific management, on the other hand, "originated" through Fredrick Winslow Taylor in 1911, and in very basic terms described the one best way work could be done and that the best way to improve output was to improve the techniques or methods used by the workers. Adam Smith is considered as one of the most influential economists in the 18th century. Although his theories have been criticized by several socialist economists, however, his idea of capitalism still has great impact to the rest of the economists during classical, neo classical periods and the structure of today’s economy. Even the former Prime Minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher had praised on Smith’s contribution on today’s capitalism market. She commented “Adam Smith, in fact, heralded the end of the strait-jacket of feudalism and released all the innate energy of private initiative and enterprise which enable wealth to be created on a scale never before contemplated” (Copley and Sutherland 1995, 2). Smith is also being recognized as the father of classical political economy and he has two famous published works that laid out the reasons to support his ultimate idea of capitalism.
The founding father of scientific management theory is Fredrick Winslow Taylor. He was an American mechanical engineer and an inventor. Modern management theorist Edward Deming credited Taylor for his contributions while Joseph Juran criticized his work for extracting more work from workers. However a careful reading of Taylor’s work will disclose that he placed workers interest as high as the employer’s in his studies. The evolution of management though the decades can be divided into two major sections. One of the sections is the classical approach.
