Intolerance, reluctant to welcome beliefs, views, or behavior that contrast from one's own. It has not been dissolved and may never be resolved. In the last several decades, we have seen our world look down on those who are different. It could be as little as they dress differently to a different ethnicity. We make assumptions that those who alter our views are the evildoers, and those are monsters. Monsters don't stay the same; they change as times do. When a new fear is created, the monster than shifts.
This study examines stereotyping of Arab Muslims in the New York Times for the past forty years. Theorists suggest that stereotyping of a minority group effects the public's opinion of that group. Other communication media theorists say that only under extreme conditions will the negative stereotypes reflect the publics' opinions of the portrayed minority group. The parallel theory between propaganda and stereotyping by the mass media is examined. Theorists including Thomson, (1977) & Myers, (1992), related to mass media effects strongly agree claiming that repetitive and non-contradictive images in the media are an effective form of propaganda. The research samples are random article reviews of the New York Times for the past forty years. Using every fifth year and 2 random numbers ranging from 1 to 12 is used to select an article search date. Islam was the search term. The Gudykunst & Kim( ? ) method of analyzing a stereotype is used to evaluate the 8 New York Times articles. The results indicate 95% of the articles were "vague," labeling entire group rather than individual. Out of the total 100%, 70% of the article used unfavorable trait characteristic labeling.
The book “Neither Man nor Women” is an ethnography about the Hijras of India published in 1990. Serena Nanda, author of the book, is a professor of Anthropology in City University of New York. When beginning her fieldwork in the study of the Hijras, she only had brief information about the Hijras since there was not much written about them before. Nanda knew she would encounter conflict in communicating with the Indian community and that she would need translators. In the city she settled in, Bastipore, which is located in south central India, there were three spoken languages. She states in the introduction that the translation process was “time consuming, but [she] felt it was necessary to make sure that [she] had correctly understood the subtleties and complexities in such conversations and to increase the reliability of [her] data” (xix). I can understand why it was so imperative to have a translator, especially because she wanted to provide readers with valid information of such unique group of people. Her organization of the book contained chapters with different informative topics about the Hijras. A few of the different sections consisted of: defining Hijras, an overview of the roles they played in society, description of their rituals and spirituality, the operation process, work, personal interviews of individual Hijras. The way she selected to organize the book is acceptable and easy to follow through. As a result of Nanda’s fieldwork, she was able to accumulate comprehension of the Hijras of India and give readers a glimpse of their lifestyle in great detail.
Sikhism is its own religion. It is not Hinduism, nor is it Islam. The people of the Sikh religion devote themselves to the remembrance of God at all times. It is also important for Sikhs to live truthfully and treat mankind equally. It is against the Sikh religion to believe in superstitions or to practice blind rituals, such as killing a cow and eating beef. With the Khalsa army, the Sikhs were able to expand their rule of an already powerful empire at the same time the British were pushing through India. The Sikhs were the last major Indian state to surrender to the British in 1849. They have also established themselves as an agricultural powerhouse in the region. The Sikhs maintain the most advanced irrigation system in India. The Sikhs in the Punjab have proven to the British that they are capable of controlling their own province in the Federation of Indian States. For these reasons the British have awarded the Sikhs their own province. The foundation of the Sikh state will be based on a “Statement of Principles” that will include an explanation of the relationship between the Sikh religion and the government, the rights of other religions and the Untouchables, and the economic policies of the future.
Harold’s years of being a human resource manager is the most important selection criterion in making the choice. Furthermore, it is also important to realize and recognize that Harold did his thesis on the problems the involve with the minority recruitment. His thesis demonstrates that Harold has an idea on how to develop and better the minority recruitment process at the agency. Due to his thesis, it seems that it would be an easy transition for Harold for when he becomes the new minority recruitment director.
In this article, the author focuses the reality of Sikhs being targets of anti-Muslim hate crimes 15 years post September 11th. Basu interviews victims who tell their stories of constantly living in fear—these families, primarily the Sikh men, are constantly targeted, harassed, and brutally murdered. As a commitment to their faith, Sikh men wear turbans and grow long beards. Many Americans, however, mistake them for Muslims based of their physical appearance. Sikhism, a monotheistic religion founded in Punjab is the fifth largest religion in the world. Close to 500,000 Sikhs preside in the United States, yet a majority of Americans know nothing about Sikhs. Post September 11th, there has been a sharp increase in hate crimes directed at Sikhs

Perspectives are thoughts and points of views we all conceive. We as humans tend to create our own perspectives of countless things in life that can be considered right to have or can be considered wrong. Some are more prone to have open-minded perspectives, while others can be very close-minded. To live in a world in which diversity surrounds us I think it is important to understand what makes us all different by our beliefs, values, and goals. Considering the fact we are all unique and different, our culture has a great impact of who we all are. In order to learn the concept of cultural diversity of this world is so grand and extremely important; it allows us to not only see how people do things different from our own norm, but also gives us an outlook on cultures we might know little to none about. Ignorance is bliss, yet can hinder one’s ability to really understand different religions that are tied into the cultures of people.
The two largest religions in the world, Christianity and Islam, were implemented by two of religions most powerful leaders, Jesus and Muhammad. Without question, both Jesus and Muhammad have affected humanity powerfully. As religious leaders both men laid down the principles upon which Christianity and Islam are founded yet today. However, while Jesus performed miracles and arose from the dead, thus proving to his followers he was God, Muhammad performed no such feats, and made no such claims. In fact, Muhammad’s only claim was that he was the last prophet sent from God.
Humankind established from one stem and divided into many roots. Yet, we have come so far that no longer we admire the fact that we are equal. Religious intolerance is a major rising issue worldwide in today’s society. A country where there this is increasingly becoming a problem in India. In India, the Hindu majority is hostile towards minority religions, particularly Muslims. There have been outbreaks of violence against Muslims in villages all over the country. It has gotten so bad that recently Bollywood actor Aamir Khan stated in an interview that, “my wife fears for her child due to the atmosphere around us and asked me if we should move out of India” (The Indian Express). The actor who breaks the Box Office record each year was bashed pretty badly through twitter because he raised questions about religious intolerance. People whom considered him an Indian till now, all of a sudden started calling him names and saying he should go live in Pakistan. Just like the actor, many others have been bashes for their comments or opinions. Religious intolerance is a major
India is the center of a very serious problem in the world today. It’s a very diverse place with people from many different religious backgrounds, who speak many different languages and come from many different regions. They are also separated economically. Two of the country’s religious sects, Muslims and Hindus, have been in conflict for hundreds of years. Their feelings of mistrust and hatred for each other are embedded in all those years and will not leave easily. What’s most disturbing is that there seems to be no plan for reconciliation available. There are numerous reasons for this conflict.
Muslim, ever wonder what this word really means? Who is classified as Muslim? Someone that is Muslim is not a terrorist, nor a bad person. They are humans. Someone that is a Muslim only has an Islamic belief. This word originated in Arabia where this whole culture developed (BBC “Islam”). Islam followers, or Muslims, were introduced to their culture from the Prophet Muhammad (BBC “Islam”). The word Islam comes up very often, but who knows what it means? It is said to be the “submission to the will of God (BBC “Islam”).” Majority of the U.S. population today see Muslims as bad people only because a certain group attacked the United States. We, as a whole, discriminate today towards Muslims and any human with an Islamic background.
