“Distance is not for the fearful, it is for the bold. It's for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It's for those knowing a good thing when they see it, even if they don't see it nearly enough." “Distance should be defied and considered as a test to make the bond stronger” (Administration). Relationships should be able to work regardless of how far someone is from another. If someone means more than anything, then miles should be the least of one’s worries. The fact that people are able to build such a strong bond for their significant other and be perfectly fine with the minor factor of so many miles being between the two is amazing. It shows how much certain people can mean to the other person. The toughest thing for the relationship would be keeping it while so many miles apart. There are obstacles that will be tripped upon but they should not become any sort of downfall. If anything, the relationship should be embraced with all of the positive qualities that come along the way. “There is an old saying that goes along the lines that absence makes the heart grow fonder” (Administration). Of course there will be trials and tribulations, but if the significant other means everything, then nothing else should matter. It would be as if the person is always right there no matter what. Ways to keep the relationship going would be a reasonable amount of communication, traveling from both people and trust are all major factors.

Communications generally occur in body languages: how the individuals interpret each other. Her essay is an event that is reoccurring more and more lately. The event results in a failure in marriage. In today’s society more and more people are splitting up or having divorces due to miscommunications. The essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation,” that Deborah Tannen wrote is much use of today because it explains where miscommunications happen and she has her own studies and research to back it up. The essay goes into depth about her ideologies that cause miscommunications. Look at a miscommunication twice and do not be quick to judge because it will save plenty of
Holmes-Rahe (1967) found out that “marital separation from mate” is the 3rd most stressful life event to a person, next to “death of a spouse” and “divorce.” Another study on Human Development Report (2009) states that “separation [between spouses] is typically a painful decision incurring high emotional costs for both the mover and those left behind.” In addition to this, they would also have to go through the challenge of maintaining their relationship despite being physically apart. The transition experienced by couples from being in proximity to being geographically apart creates a time of amplified intensity and drama (Knobloch, 2007).
Effective communication is one of the most important things to maintain a happy relationship. Communication will help to create a better atmosphere and to know what are the interests, thoughts and feelings of your loved one. All romantic relationships need a lot of communications from both sides. The main factor is interpersonal communication, which couples are able to overlap environments and create a relationship. We reviewed the movie “The Breakup” and have found the concepts of Integrating, differentiating, and terminating. This movie shows how ineffective communication can dissolve a relationship. The lack of communication is the main factor why Brooke and Gary break up. This couple tends to rely on other people instead of trying to solve their problems talking to each other. They avoid talking because every time a new conflict will begin. In many of the scenes the couple creates big arguments from small issues. In this paper, we will explain the scenes of the movie that can be compared to the interpersonal communication concepts.
A couple that live close to each other is more common then finding a partner who lives across the country, this is known as propinquity. Propinquity is a majority of the way couples meet; however, now that the internet has become an important aspect of people’s lives they are more likely to meet people across the country by being on an on-line dating website. If this is the case, one or both partners need to be willing to relocate in order to continue the relationship. Physical attraction plays an important role in relationships because it helps couples develop passion. Most sociologist have a hard time developing research on this because it is both a social and biological factor that effects people. Although, they have discovered that most couples marry people with the same level of attractiveness. Personality could guide the way a relationship will go even when the couple marries. If the couple has any negative tones they will continue into marriage unless both partners are willing to work towards a more positive way of living. If the couple can make it through all of these filters, they will most likely advance to the final filtering stage called engagement. Engagement allows the couple to show each other and others how “serious” they both are about their relationship, (Lamanna, Riedmann, Stewart,
It is important to realize that interpersonal conflict exists in every instance of interpersonal relationship. It is equally important to understand that conflicts in a relationship are not always a detrimental thing. Conflict resolution involves several aspects of effective interpersonal communication. Self-disclosure, messages (and message meaning), and transactional communication not only contribute to the solution, but can be by-products as well. Relationships are dynamic (Hamlett, Cycle 3). So too will be the conflicts that arise. Our ability to adapt and implement effective conflict resolution can actually strengthen a relationship and make the relationship more valuable.
Spend more time with each other. Partners can choose a place where both partners can have fun. Even if it is something one partner does not like, the partner should just try it. Try showing each other off to prove commitment. Take advantage of social media. If the partners do not have social media, then try trusting each other with personal things like phones, bank cards, etc. Keep the relationship problems between the two partners. The partner should not run to Pam, Sam, and Cathy every time something happens. Learn how to appreciate one another always, not just when times get hard. All a relationship need is love, time, commitment, and a little fun here and there.
There is “approximately 3.6 million married U.S. Americans involved in a long distance relationship in 2006” and “4 to 4.5 million U.S. college couples in a long distance relationship (LDR)” (Hassenzahl, 2012,p. 2). There are many challenges that couples in long distance relationship face, for instance, lack of face- to- face communication, and physical closeness. Couples in LDRs are also prone to experiencing extreme idealization, for instance, experiencing false ideals due to distance and not spending physical and quality time in their relationship. Recent study found that when those in long-distance dating relationships moved to a proximal relationship, they were likely to terminate the relationship (Beebe et al, 2011, p. 286). In other words, the transition from LDRs to geographical close relationship (GCR) may come to rapid termination of the relationship. This may happen because couples who live far apart obtains fewer information about their significant other. However, high idealization leads to high satisfaction in LDRs which increase longevity. “Couples in long-distance premarital relationships had less communication but surprisingly greater satisfaction and higher expectation for the likelihood of marriage than those in proximal, or geographically close, relationships” (Beebe et al, 2011, p. 286). My personal interest to the topic is based on by experience. Before my husband and I were married; we had a long distance relationship. Both of us are in the Military and in different branches we were always miles apart. Despite the long distances between us, we still manage to make our love flourish through communication. Now that my husband and I are married and are now geographically close to each other, we are learning more...
Lack of communication is a major cause of separation. When couples confront a problem, they don’t have the communication skills that could help them resolve the problem. In addition, due to work and other activities, husbands can fairly stay busy and away from their wives and children. Therefore, wives will spend less time talking to their husbands, so she might feel lonely. Moreover, sometime relationships tend to be cold when one side does not put an effort into listening, expressing feelings or discussing problems to the other side. Some problems will escalate when couples don’t talk with one another about them from the beginning because they are afraid of hurting the other partner. For instance, having children is one of the important matters in marriage life, but some people don’t want to talk about it. Therefore, one of the spouses might think that he or she isn't able of raising a child. So they avoid trying not to hurt the other partner emotionally. On the other hand, sometimes spouses don’t give each other the opporionity to express their feeling and opinions. In a...

Communication is important in relationships as it allows us to share our interest, concerns, support each other; organize our lives and make decisions; and it allows us to work together. Effective communication is based on the way we talk and listen, how we respond and our body language. We can all learn how to improve the way we communicate.
We always hear that close relationships are crucial to having a happy and healthy life. I believe this statement is true but I find that the challenge for myself is being able to do the work needed in keeping the relationship going smoothly and also finding the time to connect with these special someones. At this point in time my life things are relatively peaceful and my relationships seem to be going on an even keel, therefore I’m a happy person. I recognize the extreme importance in having wholesome, loving people around me which is why relational maintenance is very important. Relational maintenance is using a variety of behaviors and techniques to sustain and strengthen different types of relationships. Out of the various relationships that I currently have, there are two people that take more maintenance than the others and I would like to discuss these in my paper. The first relationship is with my boyfriend and the second is with my brother. Staying committed to the ideas I write about below, helps me focus on
Just like any other relationship that is formed between two people in the throes of intimacy, long distance relationships are filled with struggle and sometimes heartache. However, the question is, are these relationships worth it? If two people’s love is so strong for each other, it stands to reason that no distance would come between them. Perhaps the old adage speaks most in saying, “true love conquers all” – distance included.
One of the best effects that distance has on a relationship is the potential to make a romance last and to keep going. Most average relationships end after a certain amount of time because the other person may become too attached or clingy because there is not much separation. With being separated though, it can bring couples closer and I can prove this because my relationship is an
What makes a long distance work is continuous communication, using other means of communication such as Skype and Facebook. The couple needs to keep the romance alive so that neither partner should not feel that he or she have some who does not care, and not making things be too personal in the relation...
