A culture myth is a fairy-tale or set of beliefs. A cultural myth refers to the set of beliefs and stories that characterize a given culture. Empowerment is the procedure of increasing the capability of groups or individuals to make decisions and to convert those choices into most wanted action and outcomes.Empowerment is that it is the degree to which people acquire control over matters that are of importance to them. When individuals are empowered, however, they can manipulate choices that shape their own lives and potentially the lives of others. In the essay "I Just Wanna Be Average", the author Mike Rose was empowered by finding the responsibilities meaningful, see them as comparatively competent and able to do those tasks, and trust that their participation in those tasks would make an impact in some way. Mike Rose also disempowered by the low-knoeleage family and teachers who taught him nothing besides survive.
Mike Rose argues that society very often neglects and does not see the full value and potential of students in his essay. "The error went undetected, and I remained on the vocational track for two years. What a place."(Rose) He mentioned that he was seated in vocational school and put him in the bottom level classes by accident, but he did not argue with that and keep stay
in that class. Education empowers student through creating a sense of possession over learning. This happens when the students are given the power to make decisions in an area of the curriculum. Mike Rose is both empowered and disempowered in this study time at the vocational track. He disempowered by unmotivated teachers and he empowered through involvement in various activities. School system is not supposed to be designed by social classes, even though students success or not depends on themselves. People spend one over three of them lives in school, and which school they attend are like the life they are going to be in the future. Maybe just because of Mike Rose studied in an environment like vocational track making his become a great person in future.
“We want to emphasize that the personal characteristics and skills of each individual are equally important”. (Page #221, para #3) Owen and Sawhill are inquiring that to be successful in any major requires dedication and personal motivation, which is another example of the authors bringing pathos into their argument. Owen and Sawhill state that “if they don’t just enroll but graduate, they can improve their lifetime prospects”. (page #220, para #1) Owens and Sawhill statement is taken as, applying with great intensions is not good enough to be successful in college. Owen and Sawhill are completely open about the fact that college isn’t for everyone and that’s perfectly acceptable. “It may be that for a student with poor grades who is on the fence about enrolling in a four-year program, the most bang-for-the-buck will come from vocationally-oriented associate’s degree or career-specific technical training”. (Page #222, para #1) this statement opens the argument to be about both, is college worth it financially, and also academically. In Linda Lee’s case, her son was one who was smart but never really applied himself and then when it came time to go to college he was ill-prepared and had no clue about what to do with himself; however, with how “America is obsessed with college” (Lee 3) it isn’t really his fault that he wasn’t prepared but more of a lack on the educational systems part. The university-statehouse-industrial complex has grown such that the traditional models of primary and secondary education have survived two or three decades beyond their practical use. With a public school system that segregates and discriminates based on, “college material or not?” (Brolin & Loyd, 1989) and a university system that places only one in five graduates in work in their field of major (cite), our educational system has passed its prime and is still training and educating for 20th century job markets that no longer exist. The way that we educate and what we educate for and why needs rethinking from the top down and needs to be more practical and pragmatic. Career and technical education (CTE) consisting of specialized, targeted, and focused vocational programs at all levels do more than just prepare a student for a real job – these programs have practical education and socialization value that conventional classrooms centered around a teacher’s monologue for many do not. Nowhere is the added value of such targeted programs more useful and valuable than in special classes, courses, and CTE training aimed at students with disabilities.
Education holds power over determining one’s class. Knowledge and refinement can set one individual apart from another who lacks the qualities of successful individuals. Finances and opportunities distinguish class meaning the lower class has difficulty in obtaining the same conditions of the upper class. Education ultimately dictates success and power in society. Education is taken for granted and should be recognized for the significance it possesses.

The theory of empowerment is the way the status quo can successfully be transformed. According to this theory societies wanting to change the status quo will experience three different steps. The first step in the process is forming a normative goal; this is simply what you want to change to. The normative goal is what the goal of politics should be. Those who wish to change the status quo should have a normative goal know what they are seeking from the new system. The second step needed in the process is creating a method of action; this is the process which needs to take place in order to change status quo. This is necessary ensure people are able and willing to take action necessary; they must believe the goal and method is possible before
After describing his multi-talented and skilled uncle, Joe, Rose strives to provide generalised argumentation about how blue-collars apply knowledge, skills, and efficiency to their workspace. Mathematical and Verbal skills, Rose suggests, is applied regularly by blue-collars. In addition, Rose describes the academic education of his family over generations; remarking that only he finished high school and went to university. Later, he became a faculty member in a school of education after completing his graduate degree in education and cognitive psychology. Rose claims, “we also often ignore the experience of everyday work in administrative deliberations and policymaking”
Mike Rose does not describe himself as a nuisance, but as a student who was overlooked. This treatment was very a detriment to his education. “I would hide by slumping down in my seat and page through my reader, carried along by the flow of sentences in a story.” (Rose 19) He discusses the teachers’ inability to “engage the imaginations of us kids who were scuttling along at the bottom of the pond.” (Rose 26) This strategy combined poorly with the attitudes of other students who did not want to work hard, who just wanted to be average. (Rose 28) Mike Rose describes that mix of students and how it affected his own perception of education:
Although this system is rigid, it can be manipulated enough to allow some movement if an individual will put in the time and effort it takes to learn how to do this. This movement cannot happen, however, if the person does not realize that this system is not absolute. When an individual is made to believe that they belong somewhere they will often not try to change that. Mike Ross wrote an article entitled “I Just Wanna Be Average” in which he describes his experiences at a vocational school and it’s effects on his motivation and view of himself. In this article, he states that a “student will float to the mark you set” (Ross 185). At this vocational school, he was expected to do poorly because it was decided that he was not intelligent enough to handle regular classes. Because this viewpoint surrounded him, he began to view himself as someone who was less than the average person. He would produce mediocre work and put in as little effort as possible while still maintaining a passing grade. When everyone around an individual believes that they can only be what the social system says they are, it makes it hard for them to imagine that they can be something different. This results in that individual only amounting to what is expected out of them, creating the illusion that these social structures are not only absolute but the only description of a person that is needed in order to assess their value. This can be perpetuated by rumors that are spread about them, making them fall lower in the hierarchy. Then if they try to fight back these rumors will only escalate, which creates a vicious cycle in which many people cannot escape. The Quality of a child’s education often either limits or opens up a world of opportunities. Those who study the purpose of public education and the way it is distributed throughout society can often identify clear correlations between social class and the type of education a student receives. It is generally known by society that wealthy families obtain the best opportunities money can buy. Education is a tool of intellectual and economical empowerment and since the quality of education is strongly influenced by social class, a smaller portion of the American population obtains the opportunities acquired from a top notch education. Many people believe that educational inequalities are perpetuated from the interests of specific classes, but some researchers like John Gatto believe that there are even stronger social forces in play. In the essay “Against Schools” the author John Gatto presents three arguments: (1) that are educational system is flawed, (2) that the American educational system is purposely designed to create a massive working class that is easy to manipulate, and (3) alternative teaching methods should be applied to teach children to think for themselves. In this essay I will be summarizing and relating each of these arguments to other educational essays. Also, I will be discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s argument.
She explains how her son was just pushed through school. “Our youngest, a world-class charmer, did litter to develop his intellectual talent but always got by” (559). He got through school by being a good kid, he was quiet and didn’t get in trouble. This was how he made it to his senior year until Mrs. Stifter’s English class. Her son sat in the back of the room talking to his friends; and when Mary told her to just move him “believing the embarrassment would get him to settle down” (559) Mrs. Stifter just told her “I don’t move seniors I flunk them” (559). This opened Mary’s eyes that her son would have to actually apply himself to pass. He wouldn’t be handed a passing grade. After the meeting with her son teacher, she told her son if you don’t try you will fail, making him actually apply himself. This made Mary understand that Failure is a form of positive teaching tool. Our world has been created by people, and by interactions between people, making everything from law to how we greet each other socially constructed. We would like to believe that everyone has the same privileges in life, and that the economic class one is born into will not affect ones future. We like to believe that our school system provides equal opportunities for everyone and that our justice system is fair. Through the research of Stephen Richer and Laureen Snider we find our society may privilege or favour some people over others.
Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
