I was given the opportunity to interview Dr. Jodie Hanzlik, Interim Vice Provost for Graduate Studies at Colorado State University (CSU), regarding her management style and experience.
Dr. Hanzlik’s (Hanzlik, 2012) typical day encompasses meetings and more meetings, as well as dealing with crises situations (‘fire-fighting;’ matters which must be dealt with NOW), effort toward long-term projects, and touching base with her office manager on a daily basis. She tells me approximately four percent of her duties are management, with the rest being efforts toward long-term goals of vision and leadership.
Her two most critical managerial problems involve transitioning into her position and ‘fire-fighting’ while still keeping the long-term projects moving. Dr. Hanzlik’s reference to transitioning refers to the fact that she was Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Affairs until March 2011, when she was appointed to the Interim position. In March 2012 she will be named Dean of Graduate Studies, as she has been appointed to the position permanently. Dr. Hanzlik mentioned that she didn’t realize when she stepped into the interim position exactly what the leader of the Graduate School did; it is apparently a much larger job than she thought.
As part of this transition she has worked hard to communicate with her staff on learning the “ins and outs” of the position and changing processes to allow for empowerment of her employees, thereby giving them the ability to see what needs to be done and do it without needing to be told. The ‘fire-fighting’ part of the managerial problems has to do with her being able to keep her focus on long-term projects, as well as the crises in hand.

In conclusion, Dr. Hanzlik has demonstrated an awareness of the role of a manager, as well as a willingness to put in the effort needed to run a smooth operation. CSU’s Graduate School is lucky to have her at the helm.

The CEO’s Day Overview This case examines the multiple duties that the President and CEO of Midvale Community Hospital, Terry Blaze, participated in throughout the day to ensure that the hospital is running effectively. Throughout the day, Blaze attends numerous meetings, which are directed towards improvements, changes, or concerns that will overall affect the hospital. During several of them, he is required to make final decisions; however, he often directs other personnel to make that final judgment call. It was evident that Blaze wore many hats as the President and CEO of the hospital, which made it evident that his time was stretched thin. This could result in tasks going unfinished or completed incorrectly.
The new president of Weston University, Dr. Diana Ball, took over in late 1995, succeeding Dr. Harold Powers. Dr. Powers led the prestigious private university for fifteen years from a human resource frame to tailor the organization to individuals (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 16). Moreover, during Dr. Power's tenure, the reputation of once-leading private university in the Midwest diminished. Dr. Power's reputation as a scholar gained him the presidency; however, his leadership abilities fell short in dealing with the faculty. Weston's board outlined the skills needed, which included both academic standing and business acumen, for their new president to restore Weston University's reputation and lead the college toward excellence. Dr. Ball became the first woman president and impressed the board in her first few months on the job.

Chad Miller, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Dubuque, excellently showcases leadership characteristics each time I work with him. Throughout my one and a half years working underneath him, I have witnessed many great exchanges of leadership from Chad to customers, employees, and his other managers. I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”
In the interview, I asked her what kind of relationship does she have with her students and she said that she puts them at the same level as here because she doesn’t like the idea one person being superior to someone else. She used a supporting leadership style by allowing her students to feel free to think outside of the box without any judgment while still knowing that she will be there to help if they need it. She also said that she adapts her leadership style depending on the student she is working with. She understands that some people need more help than others and ensures her students that she does not play favorites with any students. Trevino is a very team oriented leader and embraces problem solving skills in her teaching methods. She shows traits of the Transformational Leader by always reassuring her Student Leadership Team that she is not her for the paycheck. Instead, she is here to make sure that every student is prepared for life after high school. Whenever she talks to her students, you can tell that she is passionate and truly cares about each and every one of their personal well beings inside and outside of school.

Being at the apex of the chain of command, the administrative nursing supervisor has numerous responsibilities including but never limited to staffing, conflict resolution, and or crisis. In many circumstances, an administrative nursing supervisor must make timely, prioritizing decisions based on the resources available at any given time.
