Causes After the Texas independence war, Mexico doesn’t recognize Texas’s independence because their president, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, was captured during the Texas independence war. Although we didn’t get to annex Texas because it would be a slave state and an unbalanced between free and slave states. Texas finally got annexed in 1845 which was one of the causes that started the Mexican American War. The other cause is that President James Polk wanted California, so he offered Mexico $30,000,000 dollars for New Mexico, California and to have the border of Texas at the Rio Grande. He sent an American diplomat, John Slidell, to Mexico City. When John Slidell came to Mexico City, Mexico refused to even to see or talk to him. Polk was determined to get that territory from Mexico. So James Polk knew he was going to war with Mexico but he needed to get the country on his side, so Polk had to get Mexico to attack first. Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to build a fort on distributed territory on January 1846 to drag Mexico to attack. On April 25th, 1846 Mexican cavalry attacked the fort, and the United States army won on the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Polk’s plan was planned out perfect. He went to Congress on May 11th and told them Mexico attacked us on our soil. On May 13th, 1846 Congress declared war on Mexico. War The United States was split on the war. Northerners thought President James Polk, who was a southerner, was trying to gain land for slaves. Other Americans thought it was wrong to have war with Mexico to get more territory. The fighting continued throughout the day and to the west of the battlefield for the American generals was General Pillow and David Twiggs which fought to cross the Rio Churubusco. The Mexican-American War of the 1840s, precipitated by border disputes and the U.S. annexation of Texas, ended with the military occupation of Mexico City by General Winfield Scott. In the subsequent treaty, the United States gained territory that would become California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.
"After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of land--the land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader. In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides. In 1861 Juarez took control of the capital, Mexico City, and put his new Constitution into effect. Not only had Juarez's laws split the country, they had caused the civil war that left Juarez in debt to Spain, England, and France. The three countries were concerned about the debt, so they held a meeting in London, at which Spain and Britain decided to waive the debt in exchange for military control of the Custom House in Vera Cruz. France did not agree to these terms and invaded Mexico in 1861 in hopes of defeating the country and disposing of Juarez. The French troops--deemed among the best trained and equipped in the world--marched into the city of Puebla on May 5, 1862, expecting no resistance. The French army consisted of 6,000 men under the command of Marshal Lorencz. The French were met by an armed force of 2,000 peasants under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza. The Mexican guerilla forces successfully defended their positions and attacked and drove back the French forces. Victory, however, was short lived. Within a year, France had successfully conquered Puebla and the rest of Mexico, and went on ruling there until 1867 when Juarez was once again restored to power. He ruled the country until his death in 1872. Cinco de Mayo, therefore, does not celebrate Mexico's independence, rather it symbolizes "the right of the people to self determination and national sovereignty, and the ability of non-Europeans to defend those rights against modern military organizations.
Later they wanted to annex it but Mexico said that any attempts to annex Texas would be an act of war. The Mexican War started in 1846, when Mexicans attacked a group of United States soldiers, under the command of Zachary Taylor, in a disputed zone on the border of United States and Mexico, killing about a dozen American soldiers. President Polk told the U.S. Congress that the “cup of forbearance has been exhausted” which means the Mexicans hit the last straw and it is time for war. President Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to Nueces River vs. Rio Grande to poke the Mexicans to shoot and they did. Even throughout continuously losing battle after battle, Mexico thought that Texas was theirs. Still, the United States was still justified in going to war with Mexico. Mexico thought that they were at Texas first and that, that meant that they had the right to call the land theirs but Americans counteracted that they were positive that Texas was theirs and God even tells them that it is destiny to have Texas.
Texas won independence from Mexico in 1836. In the year 1844, James K. Polk was elected president. He was a strong believer in manifest destiny. Congress decided to annex Texas into the United States. Mexico felt that America stole Texas from them.

Just before Polk's presidency Texas had freed itself from Mexican rule and desired American annexation. This desire came from thousands of former American citizens that settled in Texas in the 1820s. This was due to the Mexican government supplying huge land grants to entice new settlers to Texas and secure its northern border from America. In 1845 the U.S attempted to Annex Texas. Basically America wanted Texas to become one of the states rather then and independent nation by itself. At this time Texas was an independent nation that was not a part of America or Mexico. Mexico wanted to keep Texas neutral if not a part of its own country. When the U.S attempted to annex Texas Mexico became outraged, " In November 1843 Mexico had warned that if the United States should commit the 'unheard-of aggression' of seizing an integral part of 'Mexican territory' Mexico would declare war " (Bound for the Rio Grande, 62). Despite the warning the U.S attempted to annex Texas. In doing so Mexico retaliated by breaking off all diplomatic relations with the U.S. Mexico felt that the U.S was insulting them by not taking them seriously when they threatened with war. So at this point America showed a very large interest in possessing Texas. America was very close to actually acquiring Texas when they made their first mistake in the war.
The Mexican-American War, which lasted from 1846 to 1848, marked a huge turning point for America, signaling the evolution of many ideals, like regional identity, expansion, and slavery, which changed the course of American history. The nation began to rip itself in half after the acquisition of Texas and California. Slavery began to stand at the forefront of American politics and due to America’s gradual expansion, massive tension rippled across the country, testing the strength of America’s government, and the people in it.
The notions of race and slavery would predominate the conversation over waging war with Mexico as Mexico would be seen as an affront to U.S white male hegemony. This would be indicative of a mindset where people consider other races inferior and controllable through force or economics. As such, the Democrats supported the war on the notion of white slave owners being “superior” to Mexicans and blacks. On the other hand, the Whigs opposed the war on the perception of it being solely for the benefit of the South acquiring power. Ultimately, the Mexican-American war would foment the fundamental issues over liberty, power, and race that would be at the centerpiece of American history.
In addition, during Polk’s term he expanded the United States’ border to the west coast. His desire to enlarge the country stemmed from his belief in “manifest destiny” which was the idea that the United States was destined to stretch to the Pacific Ocean. His presidency; his decisions for the country were influenced by manifest destiny. In the article titled “Mexican-American War,” James K. Polk wanted to acquire California and the southwestern land of the United States. Polk’s movement of troops into the conflicted zone between the Rio Grande and Nueces River initiated a conflict with Mexico. America was still on the look for land during this time which explains the Mexican American War. Two causes include the idea of the Manifest Destiny, which is belief that the U.S. has the God-given right to own the land on the whole continent of North America. Which is completely absurd but because of this thought the U.S wanted a big majority of the Mexico territory in the Southwest. Another cause of the big war was due to the effects of a smaller but just as significant war the Texas War of independence. Since Texas is a big territory both Mexicans and Americans were living there and became known as "Texicans" but they began to revolt when they did not like the leadership of the Mexican government in the Texas territory. The Mexican-American war determined the destiny of the United States of America, it determined whether or not it would become a world power and it established the size of the United States of America. Perhaps the war was inevitable due to the idea of Manifest Destiny - Americans thought they had the divine right to extend their territory. The Mexican-American War started mainly because of the annexation of the Republic of Texas (established in 1836 after breaking away from Mexico). The United States and Mexico still had conflicts on what the borders of Texas was, the United States claimed that the Texas border with Mexico was the Rio Grande, but the Mexicans said that it was the Nueces River, so the land in between were disputed and claimed by both the United States and Mexico.
