According to the CDC, obesity is the number one health threat facing America. More than 1/3 of U.S. adults andc16% of children are obese. Obesity rates have increased exponentially over the last 40 years in every socio-economic group causing health care costs of an estimated $117 billion. There is a push across the country for Americans to get healthy. The business of weight loss is a $40 - $50 billion industry with many paths to shedding those unwanted pounds. Be it a fad diet, a surgery for weight loss, a support program or good old diet and exercise; the path to losing weight and getting healthy is achievable with hard work and determination. Of the many ways to lose weight, fad diets can be the most dangerous. These diets rely on a gimmicks to attract dieters and promise fast results with little effort. Some fad diets promote a specific food to do the trick. The grapefruit and cabbage soup diets are two examples of these types of diets. Each uses a particular food as the cornerstone of diet success. Each severely restrict the intake of other foods. Other fad diets are the Atkins Diet , the chocolate diet, the 3-day diet, and the 3-hour diet. These diets require eating specific food and eating at specific times to achieve weight loss. Fad diets promise fast results but the results are hard to sustain over time. The dieter often gains back any weight lost and in some cases adds on a few more pounds. The restrictive nature of these diets can cause vitamin deficiencies and other health issues so dieters should research them carefully and speak to a physician prior to starting any of these programs. One of the main differences between healthy diet and exercise and fad dieting is they can yield very different long term results. When fad dieting, you may be able to drop quite a bit of weight in a short period of time, but rest assured you will most likely see those pounds again. Fad diets focus on losing weight too quickly. The initial weight you lose is water weight, but as soon as you go back to regular food the pounds lost will return. Fad dieting can also wreak havoc on your muscles, and cause your body to go into starvation mode. Fad dieting works off of the idea that since your body needs fat to produce energy, it will burn the access fat that is stored to get that energy. The problem with this theory is that when you deprive your body of the necessary nutrients it needs, it then stores all the fat it can and starts burning energy from your muscles. Obesity is a huge problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people, unlike most issues. People of every gender, every age, and every race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled within the last twenty years. Something must be done not only to prevent obesity rates continuous rising, but also to dramatically increase the percentage of obese people in America altogether.
There is no doubt that obesity has taken its seat as one of the top disease that strikes the world today. In America, obesity has now spread through the country leaving 2 out of 3 adults either overweight or obese, and worldwide 1.5 billion are overweight or obese (Overweight). The cause of this disease stems from multiple reasons such as the increase in modern food production, putting out ample amounts of food causing the prices for meat, groceries, and especially junk food to plummet. Subsequently, Americans especially were more inclined to purchase more food and showed an increase in the average American house hold food intake by 1,000 more calories a day (Dreifus).

A million types of fad diets promise people to lose weight by using drugs or specific diet plans such as 5:2, paleo, hormone cure, virgin, bulletproof. Moreover, each type of fad diet has its own specific style. Studies show that 108 million people in the US follow fad diets (ABC News Staff, 2012). The fad diets are the same as fashion, where people use it enthusiastically for a period of time to give them beauty, elegant and perfect appearance. A fad diet is the most dangerous type of diet and it causes many health problems.
Ever since 2013, obesity has been one of the leading health problems in America and around the world. Obesity is a poor decision choice because it’s obesity isn’t the food types people buy; it’s a result of the the food types people buy, lack of exercise and food addictions. As soon as you have convinced yourself that you are committed to becoming healthier, losing some weight will be an added bonus. Clean out the fridge and cupboards to get rid of all the stuff that taste yummy but is bad for your health. This includes chips, ho ho’s, cookies and soda’s. I know it is hard to get rid of but you need to have fruit and vegetables instead. Also quit eating foods that contain sodium. The sodium will cause water retention, which means you will be bloated.
