The movie Invictus brings up several key points about the media in everyday life. One of the most prominent points brought up in the film is that sports have the power to bring people together and unite them with a common goal. Sports are an enormous part of the media and cultures all over the world. Whether it be the Super-bowl, World Cup, or Olympics, millions of people continue to unite and cheer for the teams they support. The reason in which sports often unites people is that it gives people something in common with one another. No matter what race, age, or gender, people of all types enjoy watching and supporting sports teams which is why it is such a powerful means to unite people. The majority of viewers are never able to witness these events first hand, which is where television comes into play. Without television, the people who are able to view sporting events would be restricted by the size of the arena. However, television allows sporting events to be broadcasted to millions even billions of people allowing them to experience the events and feel more connected to the teams they so dedicatedly support. Without television, people would not have as much access to sports, and therefore the ability of sports to unite people and nations would not be nearly as successful. Sporting events are one of the biggest media spectacles in world culture. Douglas Kellner writes “media spectacles are those phenomena of media culture that embody contemporary society’s basic values, sever to initiate individuals into a way of life, and dramatize its controversies and straggles, as well as its modes of conflict resolution” (108). However through the use of television, internet, and other forms of media memes are able to reach many people in a short amount of time. When the memes involve social or cultural change, the media plays a huge part in revolutions and can sometimes change and unit a country, just like what happen in South Africa under the leadership of Nelson Mandela.
In sporting activity participation and televised sports, there is a noticeable difference between male and female interest and involvement. In the article Center of Attention: The Gender of Sports Media Michael A. Messner discusses the issues that involve all aspects of sports strictly being a man’s affair. Messner expresses ideas that men are not only the forefront of sports participation, but sports media as well. A point is made in the article about the leaders in sports being those who are the most aggressive. This point is the reasoning behind why men are the superior figures in sports. The aggressiveness of men causes there to be more interest into male sporting activity which makes men a dominant figure in sports.
Sports is real life drama that can’t be scripted, from underdog stories to the fall of dynasties none of the events that occur in sports can be scripted. Sports media cover all these dramas and puts out their opinion about the subject, which usually has a bias towards big markets. The bias of sports media may be predictable, but not every viewer is informed so their opinion about the matter can easily sway the viewer. Sports media isn’t always bad because they do capture the special moments in sports and they bring awareness to social issues to the public. Sports media can single handedly make or break a player’s, coach’s, or team’s image by either covering the good or the bad story and it will affect the opinion of the national audience.
Sports really shape our society, and culture. You will not find very many people who do not have some love for at least one sport or another. There are so many sports out there that people love and will always watch the sport of their choice.
To deepen our understanding of the cultural values embedded in sports and to explore current values and power structures regarding men and women, it is necessary to investigate the effect that the media may possibly have in influencing beliefs about gender-appropriate sport behavior. The media is a powerful factor which influences our beliefs, attitudes, and the values we have of ourselves and others as well as the world surrounding us. It seems that the televised coverage of athletics continues to reinforce the ongoing division between males and females, and to reproduce traditional expectations regarding femininity and masculinity.

Where there are miracles there are also tragedies, sports can also affect politics negatively, with the tragedies far outweighing the miracles. The same goes for politics and government affecting a sporting event, there have been games set at a specific location purely to boost the economy of that city, certain teams being chosen to win a sporting event based on them having a disaster occurring recently, or even a country refusing to allow their athletes to compete to solidify their history and what they hope to achieve. As sports affects politics negatively politics can also affect sports negatively, there have been counties killing others during sporting events, countries being dismantled because of sporting events, and even countries refusing to have others participate in a sporting event because of their religion, ethnicity, etc. When asked to describe both sports and politics in one phrase reporter George Vecsey (2012) said “Obama plays it safe for a field goal. The Olympic games began as a man’s dream to break down the barriers race, and reestablish an ancient sporting event to showcase one’s skill to the world. They have, however, evolved into something more than that, they have evolved into an opportunity for government of countries to assert their power and dominance, for corporate giants to expand their paychecks, and for athletes to unfairly win fame in their countries. These detriments to such a beautiful system, however, can be fixed, but something that can perhaps never be fixed or found again is a way to unite the world in perfect harmony. There may never again be another way to unite countries from Asia to the Americas in peace and harmony, there may never be another way for elite athletes to showcase their skills to the entire world, and their may never be another way to break down the barriers of hate that constrict our world so tightly.
Sport can be regarded as a diplomatic tool as public diplomacy to influence opinion. Sports is a central hobby in our modern society. Sports should be considered entertaining, fun and emotionally peaceful. This does not mean that the academic community should ignore it. Sport has become an instrument of identity.
Sport creates friendships between people who would not normally communicate. This is great against racism since when people support the same ideals, they have something in common. This encourages communication between people and friendships between different people. Joe Humphrey says that sport creates “barriers between groups” which I think is wrong since people start friendships with all religions due to sport unifying people when supporting the same team.
