Gregory Corso’s poem “Marriage” is a beautiful, comic poem. The author is the main character and he is thinking about his future and the possibility of him getting married. He is trying to deeply think about all the possible scenarios he might face, he tries to think about the right decision to take in regard of him getting married or not getting married. So he takes a scientific approach to the dilemma, he first lays out all the possible options he has, and then he simulates every decision in his mind and tries to realize its consequences.
Corso opens his poem by a question to himself “Should I get married? Should I be good?” this line suggests two possible interpretations. The first interpretation is relating being good as a result of getting married. The second interpretation is giving two options cannot go together, either being good or getting married. By only the first line Corso was able to set two perspectives on marriage. Corso talks about the girl next door and how he would astound her and go out on a date with her. Corso will not follow all the traditions while dating this girl, for example, he will take her to cemeteries instead of taking her to the movies, then he will kiss her and try to make love to her, but she refuses. He gets angry, but he does not show it, and he tries to convince her to sleep with him “You must feel! It’s beautiful to feel!” (Line 7) Corso says, but she still refuses. Then Corso starts his backup plan to ponder about the bright constellation in the sky. What a genius! When Corso meets her parents he feels so uncomfortable. He tries to look very educated gentle man, so he does not ask where the bathroom is even though he wanted to use it. He realized traditions have set these stupid rules for him to follow if he wanted her parents’ approval. Even when he gains the approval “Say All right get married, we’re losing a daughter, but we’re gaining a son” (Lines 21-22), he was not sure whether to ask for the bathroom “And should I then ask where’s the bathroom?” (Line 23). He shows his disgust from people’s actions around him when he gets married. He describes the priest’s look at him as I he was doing something bad “he is looking at me as if I masturbated”.

Biographies of William Ellison, the first African American slave owner, will be scrutinized to see the social implications of a slave master owning slaves of the same ethnicity. Brockmeier’s short story represents a damaged marriage between a husband and a wife simply due to a different set of values and interests. Brockmeier reveals that there is a limit to love; husbands and wives will only go so far to continually show love for each other. Furthermore, he reveals that love can change as everything in this ever changing world does. More importantly, Brockmeier exposes the harshness and truth behind marriage and the detrimental effects on the people in the family that are involved. In the end, loving people forever seems too good to be true as affairs and divorces continually occur in the lives of numerous couples in society. Marriage is a word that instills a different meaning in every person that hears it. Some people think of the religious meaning, two people joined together in the eyes of God. Others don't involve a god into their union and see it as a union between two people. Occasionally people don't take marriage seriously and just consider it the next step after dating. Whatever the opinion, every person, whether married or single, has his or her own opinion of what a marriage is and what it entails. William Shakespeare, Judith Minty, and Linda Patsan all have their own ideas on marriage. In "Sonnet 116", "Conjoined", and "Marks," each express strong opinions on marriage. William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 116: Let Me Not to the Marriage of True Minds" states that true love is flawless and marriage that comes from that love is pure. Judith Minty's "Conjoined" maintains that marriage is unnatural and therefore restricts both person involved in it physically, spiritually, and emotionally. "Marks" by Linda Patsan supports that idea that marriage and motherhood are both hard work and deserve constant encouragement and appreciation instead of disapproval. The use of imagery, poetic devices, and diction depicts the authors' point in a powerful but still beautiful way.
When we think of marriage, the first thing that comes to mind is having a lasting relationship. Marriage is a commitment of two people to one another and to each other?s family, bonded by holy matrimony. When a couple plans to marry, they think of raising a family together, dedicating their life to each other. That?s the circle of life--our natural instinct to live and produce children and have those children demonstrate your own good morals. I have never been married; but I don?t understand why when two people get married and vow to be together for richer and poorer, better or worse, decide to just forget about that commitment. In the short story "The Story of an Hour" Kate Chopin suggests that in the case of Mrs. Mallard and Mr. Mallard, love was not a deciding factor for their reason to get married. Though the response of three readers, one being myself, we will explore the character of Mrs. Mallard and the idea of love in her marriage. Kate Chopin has given little detail about the Mallards and therefore left much to the imagination of the reader. Although there are similarities in details between readers such as: point of view, setting, and character, each reader brings new perspective and ideas. This type of analysis of the text allows a richer and more knowledgeable outlook; not only by enhancing ones own ideas by introducing new ones.
