Marquis vs. Warren in the Case Against Abortion

1306 Words3 Pages

Introduction There are many factors that are taken into consideration when determining if abortion is morally permissible, or wrong including; sentience of the fetus, the fetuses right to life, the difference between adult human beings and fetuses, the autonomy of the pregnant woman, and the legality of abortion. Don Marquis argues that abortion is always morally wrong, excluding cases in which the woman is threatened by pregnancy, or abortion after rape, because fetuses have a valuable future. Mary Anne Warren contends that late term abortions are morally permissible because birth is the most significant event for a fetus, and a woman’s autonomy should never be suspended. Don Marquis argument is more convincing than Mary Anne Warren’s because the argument of the wrongness of killing as it destroys the opportunity of a valuable future, always overcomes the defense of a woman’s autonomy, as the woman who’s life is not threatened by pregnancy has various other morally feasible options than abortion. This paper will first provide an exposition of Marquis argument and Warren’s argument, and secondly an explanation of why Marquis argument is more persuasive than Warren’s. Why Abortion is Immoral Don Marquis primary argument lays on the fact that a fetus possesses a property, the possession of which in an adult human being is sufficient to make killing an adult human being wrong, makes abortion wrong (Gedge & Waluchow, 2012, p224). This property is the right to a valuable future. Marquis argument defends the position that abortion is morally wrong against pro-choice arguments, including the irrationality of a fetus, the lack of a fetus desire to live, and the fetus not being considered a victim. The pro-choice argument of it being ... ... middle of paper ... ...es presented, and disregarded the fetuses right to a valuable life. Warren also briefly discussed the morally permissible options, such as adoption but failed to include how much more beneficiary putting a child up for adoption is rather than aborting the fetus. Marquis article is more convincing even to those who are pro-choice as it is less easy to criticize. Works Cited Caplan, A., & Arp, R. (2014).
