America’s controversial debate over whether marijuana should be legalized has been baffling many communities and citizens for some time now. Due to the vital decision being made by the government, many political and federal aspects are being considered. Marijuana has been used pharmaceutically tracing back all the way to ancient times and is legal to use for medical purposes in the United States. Marijuana’s medical uses should be enough to have the plant considered a legal substance.
Medicinal use of cannabis has been unearthed for thousands of years as treatment for whooping cough, constipation, lower fevers, and rheumatic pains, to induce sleep, and reduce headaches. Some of the oldest records of cannabis use come from Ancient Greeks and Romans, as were some of the oldest records from the Chinese Emperor, Shen Nung. In 1545, the plant spread to the western hemisphere where Spaniards imported it to Chile for its use as fiber ("Cannabis, coca,”). Ironically the hemp fiber, which is used to make paper, cloth, and rope, was actually required by The Virginia Assembly of 1619 to be produced by farmers. The law required every householder to plant at least 10 vines. If anyone were to neglect this law, the Governor and Council of Estate would impose penalty that seemed fit, (“Marijuana timeline,”). The hemp fibers contained a very low amount of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which still produces items daily. Some jewelry and even tanning lotions use hemp as a main ingredient. The uses of cannabis at the time were for hempen fibers, oil from seeds, and seeds for food, medicine, and narcotic purposes ("Marijuana since the," ).
