It’s yellow eye fumed in hatred and rage. It lifted a weight high up into the air and slammed it down onto Beau’s foot. A ear shattering scream escaped from Beau’s mouth as it landed, his arms jerked back and the bar plummeted down towards his body, it landed square on his chest with a thud. A deep-cherry red blood spurted from his mouth and his eyes glazed over. The figure clad in black cackled it’s high pitched laugh and then vanished before Missy’s fear stricken eyes.

No one would talk to her, recess was spent in anguish, and she would find garbage and spoiled food in her book bag. As she progressed into 5th grade, some of the social atmosphere began to shift in subtle but profound ways. Being accepted into a clique is all that matters. Instead of being admired for class participation, as in earlier years she was laughed at and labeled as “teacher’s pet.” She said the rules were simple “shun or be shunned—if you weren’t willing to go along with the crowd, you would become the reject.”
It was a sunny day with a sweet aroma of blooming tulips. The sunlight glittered on their faces as the breeze rattled the chestnut tree above. There was an occasional giggle as they talked, but there was also a hint of discomfort and awkwardness between them as they peeked at each other’s face and recoiled when the other looked up. When the bell rang twice, I saw them say goodbye and walk away from each other. In the darkness of the crowd, a glimmer flashed into my eyes from Hannah’s cheeks.

Instead of reporting to the classroom that morning for instruction, they were to report immediately to the simulator. They put on their suits and took their seats. They heard the door slam as usual but then lock. Outside Josh could see Mr. Tisdale’s smirky little grin as he stood in the next building behind the soundproof glass as he waved. Loud ear deafening noises were heard and then Josh’s head forced back into his seat with the force of gravity as the rockets fired. He suddenly realized this was not a
