Main Reasons for the Fall of Feudalism

Feudalism developed as a result of the frequent invasions made by the vikings during the Middle Ages around the 900s to early 1500s. Feudalism served its purpose by creating a system where the king would appoint lords that would appoint knights to appoint serfs that would be expected to work the land and fields in exchange for food, protection, and accommodations. It provided stability because lords were able to govern smaller groups of people through a system called manorialism. Feudalism allowed people to live in self-sufficient areas where it was not necessary to rely on trade or contact with other areas since people were interdependent. During the time period of feudalism there was no separation between church and state leaving the church to be very powerful (Religion). Even though feudalism provided a long-lasting system which was strong, feudalism came to an end. Reasons to the collapse of feudalism included the agricultural revolution, the rise of Burgesses, the commercial revolution, the impact of the crusades, and the result of the bubonic plague. Although some believe that the fall of feudalism was a direct result of the bubonic plague, the primary reasons for the collapse of feudalism was the agricultural revolution because of the production of new technology, the rise of burgesses because of the increase in jobs, the commercial revolution because people did not want to be limited to what the had, and the crusades because of the power of the church along with cultural diffusion.
