Mad cow disease is a vile disease; there is a lot of data about the origin, effects, and symptoms that this article will talk about. One positive side from mad cow disease is that you cannot get it from eating steak or a hamburger etc. There is a deadly disease that humans get that is similar to mad cow disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, otherwise known as vCJD. When you acquire vCJD it is very likely that you will not even realize you have it until a couple years later and in some rare occasions it might take up to 15 years. The origin of mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is originated in Great Britain in 1986. The farmers first noticed that something was up when there cattle started acting funny. While farming in England is a splendid thing to do, soybeans, which are very good for your cattle, where not easily available to them. Soybeans did not grow very well in England so the farmers had to start buying an animal byproduct that was made with mixed meat and bones of cattle and sheep. This method caused the infected brains, nervous systems, and blood infected cattle to be fed to other cows, filling them with infected meat. More and more cows began to show the same symptoms so more and more cattle died. The more cattle died the more food for the other cows causing a huge epidemic. So England tried to take control of the situation and make the food for the cattle to undergo and intense heat and steam process trying to kill the prions in the meat. The BSE epidemic officially ended when all of the cattle herds that had it or was thought to have it were killed in a major genocide of cattle. One farm knew that they were manufacturing tainted meat and yet still kept providing it for the beef industry. Eventually it was discovered that this farm was doing that and the government went in and threw out all the tainted meat and shutdown the farm for good. That cost us several million pounds of meat and it was pretty costly.

It was technically named BSE but quickly acquired the mad cow tag because of the way infected cattle behave. Another name for Mad Cow Disease is the new variant Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), similar to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, which is a deadly brain illness that strikes about one per million per year (USDA) due to genetic or unknown causes while the vCJD is contracted from eating infected cows (USDA). Both CJD and vCJD are so similarly named because of the similar effects from the illness.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal neuro-degenerative, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of the family Cervidae (Hamir, et.al., 2006). The family Cervidae includes mule deer, Odocolileus hemionus, white-tailed deer, Odocolileus virginianus, Rocky Mountain elk, Cervus elaphus nelsoni, and moose, Alces alces shirasi, among others (Sigurdon & Aguzzi, 2007). CWD is a prion disease, meaning it is a protein caused infection, that occurs naturally in the deer family (Song & Lawson, 2009). This protein is suspected to be an abnormal isoform (PrPSc) of the naturally occurring host prion protein (PrPC) (Blanchong, et. Al., 2009). Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), mad cow disease, is a similar prion effecting cattle as CWD affects Cervidae. Although, scientists are not sure of transmission route it is suspected that CWD is transmissible and infectious through direct contact with infected individuals or through environmental contamination (Song & Lawson, 2009). Tests have been performed showing susceptibility of altered mice to oral transmission, mimicking the suspected route of entry, and the incubation appears slower but lasts longer with oral infection (Trifilo, et.al., 2007). The approximate time from the initial infection to death is three years.
Normally, cows in Northern Europe in places such as Denmark live normal lives simply grazing on grass, and existing. However, there have been recent changes that have disrupted this normal activity. Generally the bluetongue virus (spread by Culicoides imicola, a biting midge) has been confined to Southern Europe and other places around the Mediterranean. But with the increase in temperature throughout the area, the midge has been allowed to migrate northward. This new pest is a nuisance and causes lots of difficulties to farmers in the area. This could cause Cows to raise the acid level this also creates existence for the dangerous disease E. Coli. E. Coli is a bacteria that is inside your intestines that helps you break down food. When cows are fed corn it also decreases the healthy acids such as Omega-3 and increases Omega-6 which is unhealthy. We should also care about their living conditions because a cow is in one area for most of the day just eating corn and when cows eat corn they tend to poop a lot. It is crowded in the eating area for cows so when they poop it falls on the ground and they eat so much corn that they just keep pooping so eventually they start stepping in it and this would cause them to get diseases. Some farmers when they slaughter them they do check for diseases but some don’t, so the diseases travel with the cow and onto your dinner plate which means that you could be eating an infected cow without knowing it. This could give you diseases and it could cause death. In Food Inc. they showed an example of a boy called Kevin who died because of consuming some unsanitary meat. He got E. Coli and died 12 days later. This proves that this should not be taken lightly because many people die from diseases similar to this one.
Every beef cattle produced is injected with steroids. With the injection of steroids it makes the cow grow at an alarming rate, and helps turn food into muscle at a quicker rate.
