Lotteries take advantage of the poor in several ways. One way the lottery attracts them, is to waste their money on buying lottery tickets instead of buying everyday necessities, such as food, clothing, and shelter for their families. The lottery uses advertising as the main way to get the people to buy tickets. They make winning the money so appealing. Many states are now dependent on lotteries, because the money from these are spent on many projects in the state. The states back in the 1970s used other means beside the lottery for revenue. One problem could be having security and safety risks. If the winner is announced publicly, people will ask for money and relatives out of the blue will contact you. You could receive many letters in the mail with sob stories about sick children just to get your sympathy and money from you. It would drive you crazy. Another problem, is gambling of any kind can become an addiction. The winner may also suffer financial ruin after winning all that money and wishing they never won it in the first place. Gambling is acceptable but when it goes too far to the point of being an addiction then there is trouble brewing. According to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission or the (NGISC) estimates that gambling addiction affects about two to five percent of Americans(Tyler,para1). A person who cannot control themselves with this addiction, may want to buy lottery tickets or go to the casinos to play the machines or other gambling games. A compulsive gambler need to learn how to manage the impulse and balance their behavior with their money. An impulse gambler has to quit completely, because once they start to gamble, The cycle begins over again just as it would for an alcoholic or drug addict. There are treatments and a severe compulsive gambler would likely need to go into an inpatient rehab program. Another choice of treatment is an out patient rehab program where patients can go to classes and then go home after wards. There are group sessions or one-on-one therapy. Psycho therapy or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which can help if a person has emotional problems and the individual counseling can help open up the patient with the gambling addiction.
