Music is an important aspect of all cultures. Studying the music created by another culture allows us to learn about other peoples’ values and belief systems, their religious practices, and their social interactions with each other and with their social institutions (Hood, 1971; Titon, et. al, 2008). Analyzing the music of another culture also expands our general knowledge of other people which is especially important in an age of globalization where the achievements of one culture may influence the values, beliefs, and social institutions of another. On the globalization of popular culture (see Barber, 1995, discussing McWorld), music as a cultural artifact, is not produced in isolation, but rather as a collaborative process influenced by a number of factors which occur at the local, trans-local, and virtual levels; each of which relates to the scene perspective used by sociologists to study popular music (Bennett, 2004). The concept of scene, as expressed by Bennett involves the collection of musicians, promoters, and fans who create a particular genre of music (2004, p. 223). For example, New Orleans jazz, Chicago blues, or Nashville country music are all well-known examples of popular music (Bennett, p. 223). But with advancements in information technology, and globalization of culture, what were once isolated communities are now thriving local music scenes and sources of creativity for popular music. On this point, starting in the 1980s, Reykjavik, Iceland, has produced a music scene where internationally acclaimed artists such as Björk, Sugarcubes, Mugison, Múm, Sigur Rós and Gus have emerged (Boas, 2013). In this paper, the scene perspective is used to describe the local music scene of Reykjavik, and particularly the work ... ... middle of paper ... ...local scene may no longer be bounded by geography but by bits. In fact, the concepts of scene based on ‘land space’, may be transferred to virtual space. A case in point is that just as people gravitate to each other in real space to form local music communities; now days, chatrooms, youtube, and other social media sites allow similar interactions to occur online. Thus, it is not surprising that Román-Velázquez (1999) challenged sociologists to examine how it is that particular music and groups become linked. So what do we learn about culture from analyzing local music scenes? That local scenes are rich sources of culture, and through them, we learn how other people view issues such as social justice, gender roles, and how people form communities. The scene perspective for analyzing culture has merit, and can be extended to study other aspects of culture as well.

Because of this, though, the globalization of a song can be seen as detractor to the value of the song 's original use or purpose as there is an essential loss of identity for the song when it is utilized for purposes that stand in contrast to the personal value that it originally possessed. If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
The term “Ethnomusicology” is defined as “the study of music in its cultural context.” Ethnomusicologists focus and study music in order to not only interpret its literal meaning but also to figure out its importance to its listeners and artists along with the way its purpose is communicated to its audience. . Ethnomusicology is highly versatile and multidisciplinary. People working in this sector could have solid foundations and basics of music ,dance, folklore and other different aspects related to music ,yet all ethnomusicologists share a meaningful and coherent foundation in approaches and methods followed.
In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many individuals. It is a form of mass communication that"speaks directly to society as a cultural form", and often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences (King 19). Music is so influential because it communicates on three different levels: the physical, emotional, and cognitive. Not only does it operate in a nondiscursive way, by affecting the physiological mode of the body, causing one to move and dance, but it also encourages one to think. This paper will explore music as a form of protest; showing how a political message, in general form, is presented through music. Protest music addresses the social, political, and economic conditions of the times and often speaks directly to the listener's experience (King 20). In the following pages, a general comparison will be made between the evolution and effects of the blues, jazz, reggae music, and hip-hop, with a focus on reggae and hip-hop.

World music may sound as simple as its name suggests, however the world music phenomenon expresses a deeper story that many people seem to miss. There is so much that makes up a world music genre, but what we hear about it is not always the easiest to decipher and generally comes from powerful and large organisations, where not all of it is explained thoroughly. A lot of their understanding comes from what they are only interested in and most important stories and factors are either ignored or incomplete (Stokes 2003, p. 297). Not receiving the full picture, gives us a limited understanding of world music and its sub genres. Different genres of music over the globe have been shaped in many ways by influences such as the; historical and traditional root, people and their culture, migration, globalisation, politics and commodification. Nueva Canción is one example of a world music genre that has been influenced in such ways, and of which has a strong historical and political story worthy to be recognised. This essay will focus on the way the genre, Nueva Canción has become a significant genre of world music, by exploring the influences stated previously.
Pop culture and mainstream media is a world of constant evolution, and throughout the ages music has been a factor in that said evolution. From the Jazz Movement of the 20’s to the Hip-Hop Revolution of the 90’s and everything in between, trends today and the basis of most Pop Culture revolved around what some would call “the sound of the decade”. Electronic Music has significantly changed the course of mainstream culture, had a remarkable rise in finance and business, all while making it today’s biggest music movement since the decade of Hip-Hop.

The book is divided into four chapters: 1) Humanly Organized Sound, 2) Music in Society and Culture, 3) Culture and Society in Music, and 4) Soundly Organized Humanity. In chapter one, Blacking discusses the analysis of sound. He begins by describing music as humanly organized sound. His overarching theme is that “the function of tones in relation to each other cannot be explained adequately as part of a closed system” (30). In other words, music can’t be analyzed simply by one set of rules. This is because every single culture has a different system that they use to structure and compose their music. In order to adequately analyze a society’s music we have to study their “system.” We must learn what music means to them. Then, and only then, can we accurately and completely analyze what a particular type or piece of music means to a particular society and culture.

Music is an art form and source of power. Many forms of music reflect culture and society, as well as, containing political content and social message. Music as social change has been highlighted throughout the 20th century. In the 1960s the United States saw political and socially oriented folk music discussing the Vietnam War and other social issues. In Jamaica during the 1970s and 1980s reggae developed out of the Ghetto’s of Trench town and expressed the social unrest of the poor and the need to over-through the oppressors. The 1980’s brought the newest development in social and political music, the emergence of hip-hop and rap. This urban musical art form that was developed in New York City has now taken over the mainstream, but originated as an empowering art form for urban youth and emerging working class.
In this essay I intend to explore what is meant by the terms popular culture and high culture. I will also look at how the relationship between these two terms has become distorted and blurred over time. In order to reinforce what I am saying about popular and high culture I will be using a range of examples from the music industry to show how the line between high culture and popular culture has become ambiguous. I will also call upon the work of John Storey to give my work an academic foundation. Although Storey is the main academic I will be looking at, I will also include references to a number of other academics who have written about popular culture and high culture.
The influence that music has throughout the world is immeasurable. Music evokes many feelings, surfaces old memories, and creates new ones all while satisfying a sense of human emotion. With the ability to help identify a culture, as well as educate countries about other cultures, music also provides for a sense of knowledge. Music can be a tool for many things: relaxation, stimulation and communication. But at the same time it can also be a tool for resistance: against parents, against police against power. Within the reign of imported culture, cross cultivation and the creation of the so-called global village lies the need to expand horizons to engulf more than just what you see everyday. It is important to note that the role of music in today’s world is a key tool in the process of globalization. However, this does not necessarily provide us with any reasons that would make us believe that music has a homogenizing affect on the world.
Music has played a role in society since the dawn of man. Said to be the beginning of communication in early civilization, music and dance have influenced how we think, act and treat members of our own society. Song and dance is used in rites of passage ceremonies such as births, weddings and funerals throughout the world. Jamaican and Yoruba cultures have made many contributions to our society. The uses of this music as a vehicle for political issues, values, and beliefs have been used by many musicians from different cultures. I intend to discuss the Contribution of these two contemporary cultures music and their effect on society.
