Literary Elements of “The Storm”
What elements are needed to create a good short story? As John Dufrense quoted "A good story has a visionary quality, a personal voice, a signature gesture(1969). The elements used should be used so strongly that it pulls you in; forcing you to connect to the people in the story. Not every story is written well enough to be capable of doing this. This also creates a connection with the reader; leaving some type of effect or impacting the reader along with the characters’ lives. Although there are many elements in writing but one of the greatest things of writing is the ability to make the reader empathize with the characters. This goes beyond than just a connection with the characters; when the reader is able to apprehend with the characters he or she is truly relating and reaching out to them. The author has accomplished something truly special when the reader has the ability to feel the agony that a character is feeling.
Effectively using these elements in a piece of literature enhances the reader’s curiosity. One prime example of such usage of these elements is seen in Kate Chopin's writing. Her use of foreshadowing and use of emotional conflicts put into few words in the short piece "The Storm" adds an element that is alluring, holding the reader's interest. In this short piece of literature, a father and son, Bobinot and Bibi, are forced to remain in a store where they were shopping before the storm, waiting for the storm to pass over them. In the meantime, the wife and mother, Calixta, whom is still at home, receives an unexpected visit from a former lover named Alicee. The two have an affair and the story starts to come together. In this short story Alcee and Calixta both come to realization of how good they have things with their spouses and how that they already found the ones that they love, which weren't each other. This made me aware of how we as people can take things for granted or believing we know what’s best for us. In reality we don't always know what’s best until something occurs and shows us that what we already have is the best.

During a fierce storm, when her husband, Bobinot and their son, Bibi are away, Calixta is faced with a choice to give in to temptation. A storm can represent and symbolize many different meanings. The impact of the word can be brought about in many different views and aspects that arrange themselves to create and portray detailed information and great definition to the subject of the short story as a whole. By using the storm as a symbol, it gives way to a passage that will encounter the relationship and parallel aspect of both the fervent thunder that occurs and the sexual passion that is encountered throughout the story. Kate Chopin opens up an interesting view and tentative explanation of human sexuality and the strong point of view of regulations placed on human sexuality as well as the aspect of trying to control a storm. By tying up these two ideas with one word, Kate Chopin was able to provide a view that would symbolize the premise of desires through variations of the storm.

Meanwhile, the wife and mother, Calixta, remaining at home, receives an unexpected visit from a former lover of hers, Alcée. The two lovers ultimately consummate their relationship. Alcée then departs once the storm subsides, at which time the father and son return home. No repercussions of the extramarital affair take place within the story.
“The Storm” by Kate Chopin illustrates an affair between old lovers, Calixta and Alcée. “For my Lover, Returning to His Wife” by Anne Sexton, the narrator describes that the man she is having an affair with will never leave his wife for her. “Adultery” by James Dickey proves that at times an affair is nothing more than just an affair. Throughout all three texts, you begin to read the different attitudes towards sexual and marital fidelity and the different reactions the individuals have to their affairs. Although, infidelity is viewed as a terrible thing, some people have reasons for the actions.

“The Storm” was corresponded to each stage of story, and it symbolized the sexual desire of Calixta as she expected the passion from affair. Chopin stated the sky “began to grow dark” (Chopin 111) and then “the big rain drops began to fall” (Chopin 11). Accompanied with the description of the atmosphere, Alcee “went inside, closing door after him.” (Chopin 111) The rising action was that Alcee walked into Calixta’s house to escape the storm and the rain drops began. Alcee maintains his manner and being polite to Calixta at the beginning. Along with “the rain beat upon the low, shingled roof with a force and chatter that threatened to break an entrance and deluge them there” (Chopin111), the setting change to “her bed room” (Chopin 111) which indicated there would be a further development among Alcee and Calixta. Every storm creeps upon us, hits a luminous climax, and then fades away into nothingness. We all experience thunder and lightening in our lives remaining “purified air”. It brings something rejuvenating and refreshing to our life. In the short story,”The Storm”, written by Kate Chapin on July 19, 1898 introduces us to Calixta who “coincidently” meets her old lover alone at home due to an upcoming storm and awakens old passions and desires.
These two themes are built upon two main characters. Even the smallest details of these characters bring out the themes in a way that can only give the story a happy ending. Calixta still has a place in her heart for Alce, her prince charming, which gives the affair a chance to happen. The overall story is symbolized through the color white and the passing storm which intensifies all of the emotions in the story. “The Storm” was a controversial story that many did not approve of when it was first written. Naturalism is about bringing humans into the “natural world”. We, as humans, are seen as aspects of nature collectively not separate like they once were. “Naturalism holds that everything we are and do is connected to the rest of the world and derived from conditions that precede us and surround us. Each of us is an unfolding natural process, and every aspect of that process is caused, and is a cause itself ” (“A Guide for Naturalism”). Humans are like “animals” they contain the same drives that animals have. They are just plain “natural”. Many authors express naturalism in their writings such as Kate Chopin. She expresses a naturalistic view on sexual drives which classify her as a naturalistic writer.
Many short story writers have written about the gender and role of woman in society. Some of these stories express what Barbara Walter calls, “The Cult of True Womanhood” meaning the separation of both man and woman in social, political and economic spheres. In order to be considered a “true woman” woman were to abide by the set of standards that were given to her. Women were expected to live by the four main principal virtues - piety, purity, submissiveness, and domestication. In Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Storm,” Calixta the main female character breaks away from “The Cult of True Womanhood” when she has a sexual encounter with her past lover Alcée. The storm goes through many twists and turns that tie with their adulterous actions. Although she breaks away from the four main principal virtues, she in the end is considered to be pure innocent of heart because the action in which occurred happened instantly, and as white as she was, she was taken away from her innocence.
