Michelangelo di Ludovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy (“Michelangelo”, 2013). His childhood was lacking in affection, and when he was only six years old his mother, Francesca Neri, died of an illness leaving him with his father, Ludovico. (Ruehring). At a young age, Ludovico realized Michelangelo’s intellectual potential and enrolled him in Francesco Galeota’s school (Ruehring). While at the school, Michelangelo met a student of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. (Ruehring). Domenico Ghirlandaio was an early Renaissance painter who was known for his detailed narrative frescoes (“Domenico Ghirlandaio”, 2013). When Michelangelo was only thirteen he decided to pursue art and become an apprentice in Domenico Ghirlandaio’s workshop. (Ruehring). Michelangelo’s father became enraged with Michelangelo’s decision, for he had planned for Michelangelo to become a merchant and uphold the family’s standing in society (Ruehring). Because of Michelangelo’s decision to pursue art instead of become a merchant, a separation between Michelangelo and his father was created; the separation between his father and him troubled Michelangelo his entire life (Ruehring). After his apprenticeship with Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo studied sculpture and anatomy at the school in the Medici gardens (Ruehring). Because of Michelangelo’s success there, he was invited into Lorenzo de’ Medici’s home (Ruehring). Lorenzo de’ Medici, also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, was the ruler and patron of arts and was very well renowned (“Lorenzo De’ Medici Biography”, 2013). This was very impactful on Michelangelo’s life and influenced his future. Through that experience, he was exposed to humanists, scientists, and poets (Ruehring). Even thoug...

His father was a banker and was looking to his son to engage in his businesses. As a young boy, he has ambitions of becoming a sculptor, but his father was very discouraging of this. He wanted his son to live up to the family name and take up his father’s businesses. Michelangelo became friends with Francesco Granacci, who introduced him to Domenico Ghirlandio(biography.com). Michelangelo and his father got into a series of arguments until eventually they arranged for him to study under Ghirlandaio at the age of thirteen. The Medici’s were very rich from making the finest cloths. He first developed a love for painting.Michelangelo’s mother was very ill, so he was placed in a home with stonecutters(Biography.com Editors, 1). He was not interested in school; he mostly watched others paint the churches across the street. That’s ironic, because, later, Michelangelo painted a church ceiling. At the age of 13, Michelangelo’s father accepted that Michelangelo had no interest

The night Michelangelo Buonarroti was born, “Mercury and Venus were in the house of Jove,” says Vasari. This means that, according to a lucky star, Michelangelo could be expected to produce extraordinary works of both art and intellect. How true this turned out to be! Whether it was fate or coincidence, few haven’t heard of this world renowned and avant-garde talent. From painting to architecture and sculpture, it seems like there is nothing Michelangelo couldn’t master. Michelangelo is said to have considered himself a sculptor, but why was it then that he produced his sculpture with such a unique and striking depiction of the human body? Why did Michelangelo create such masculine forms, and was it self expression that provoked this intense artistry? There are many factors that can influence an artists creative process, but with Michelangelo the most prominent were most likely his religion, society, travels, and self perception.
