Its largest city numbering only 5,000, Liechtenstein is barely a country. Liechtenstein’s long history contradicts its small size, the country shifting power at numerous occasion and becoming part of many great empires. Through its exposure to many cultures and rulers, Liechtenstein has developed a rich and widely arrayed culture. Liechtenstein’s government, although altered and transformed many times, has become stable. This tiny, alpine country, bordered by Switzerland on the West and Austria on the East, is only 62 square miles, but still a prospering country. Despite its miniscule size, Liechtenstein is a flourishing country with a rich culture, complex history, and a stable government-all contributing to the country’s society.
Liechtenstein’s history is made up of many different rulers and empires. Multiple rulers and sovereignties characterize even its early history. As early as 4000-1800 B.C., the area known today as Liechtenstein was occupied by farming groups. It became part of Raetia, a province of the Roman Empire, in 15 B.C. and, after the fall of the Romans, became part of Charlemagne’s Frankish Empire. In the 10th century, the area of Liechtenstein, which was part of Raetia, became part of the Holy Roman Empire. At this point the people group who would eventually become the people of Liechtenstein were not ruling over the region that would be Liechtenstein. The land of what is now Liechtenstein was not joined together.

While developing the constitution the framers had to take precautions to prevent the people's rights from being stripped away by an oppressive government. Since the constitution was constructed I believe it is self-evident that the people wanted to avoid tyranny in their new nation. That is exactly what the framers of the Constitution did in the summer of 1787 when delegates from twelve states met together to create a new government. The delegates discussed how to make the constitution strong enough to defend its citizens but yet structured enough so that tyranny would not take place. Concepts such as the Bill of Rights, Checks and Balances, and Separation of Powers would be what helped the constitution reach its goal of being tyranny free.
Tyranny is a problem that many countries have faced during history, and it can lead to disastrous consequences. Hitler was a tyrant, and while he was controlling Germany millions of people were killed. For fear of outcomes like this, the framers of the constitution provided ways to ensure our country would never face tyranny. The American Constitution is a living, breathing document. As society progresses, the document is supposed to adjust to the needs and will of the people. However, Levinson challenges whether necessary adjustments are ever actually made. He believes that the way the Constitution is structured promotes an inefficient and even unjust government. Like all arguments, there are always two sides. The founding fathers obviously had the best intentions, and the fundamentals of the Constitution seem to be a guide towards a strong federal republic. However, there are definitely flaws, and the only way to adequately address these flaws would be to call for a new Constitutional Convention. He had also been part of the alliance agaisnt Napleon, the emperor of france. He was one of the most important diplomats of him era. He was serving as the Foreign Minister of the Holy Roman Empire from 1809 until the revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation. This quote was said at a time of liberal revolution. In 1848-1871 there had been a revolt from the liberals in Europe. During this time the economy in Eupore was awful. People worked long hours for little pay and had awful working and living conditions. Haversts in places all over Europe were doing poorly during 1847. With that food prices were extreamly high the poor could get little food. Nothing was being done to help feed the starving. With all of that going on socialism started coming up. Ideas of this began to spread throughout france finally causing the liberals to revolt. During this time the liberals beheaded their emperor and his wife, finally endeding the rain of monachry. The revolts started in France were moderate liberals gave rousing speeches, eventully it spread throughout al of east and central Europe. This quote is very accurate for this time peird. It made sense that it was said durning a time of revolutions that began in France.
A constitution is the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation is governed. Our founding fathers created the US Constitution to set specific standards for our country. We must ask ourselves why our founding fathers created the Constitution in the first place. America revolted against the British due to their monarchy form of government. After the American Revolution, each of the original 13 colonies operated under its own rules of government. Most states were against any form of centralized rule from the government. They feared that what happened in England would happen again. They decided to write the Articles of Confederation, which was ratified in 1781. It was not effective and it led to many problems. Over 200 years ago the founding fathers gathered in Pennsylvania, where the constitutional convention was held in order to amend the articles of confederation. The Habsburg Monarchy first had to deal with the Magyar demands of autonomy which culminated into the Compromise of 1867. From then the Emperor Francis Joseph would have the title of King of Hungary. This dual monarchy was to be a success in satisfying both the Habsburgs and the Magyars but had the effect of causing both disappointment and resentment to the significant national minorities in the empire. The Habsburg Monarchy managed to appease many nationalities such as the Poles and Italians (though they had always strived for a unified Italy) by giving them a favoured position in the empire, in which their nobility and relative autonomy was sustained. I will split this answer up into two sections; the Cisleithanian (Austrian) and the Hungarian parts of the empire. Both dealt with the nationalities within their borders differently and consequently were faced with varied political parties representing the demands of their group. The Habsburg Monarchy ruled over a nations of poor, more backward countries of Europe; and in an age where small countries tend to get absorbed by their more powerful neighbours, national minorities were more willing to remain part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Sked points out that the majority of important political movements did not want a break from the Monarchy; rather they wanted either reforms such as the use of their cultural language in schools or proportionate representation in government. Another reason for the lack of any real demand for sovereignty within the empire by its various national minorities is that the division between the Slavs (which constituted roughly half the total population) meant they were unable to exert any real power as a unified nation.
The history of Liechtenstein, combined with its form of government, a constitutional hereditary monarchy can explain its geographic size. It was one of the several principalities of the Holy Roman Empire, which has survived to this day. Because it retained its royal family, political support is high. Its royal family brings a sense of individualism and national pride to a small nation which otherwise would have little reason for being sovereign.
