Recently, the California elections proposed a controversial new law for the state to apply a new tax on cannabis, Proposition 19. Many reasons arise to contest this new proposition. Firstly, we currently do not have a sufficient system in place to prevent the dispersion of cannabis to minors. Secondly, drivers already have enough to be concerned about, such as drunk drivers and people using cell-phones, therefore we should not add marijuana as an additional influence for people to have open access to. Moreover, once we compromise by sanctioning a recognized drug, what is stopping us from eventually legalizing far more serious drugs, like cocaine and heroin? Say no to legalizing marijuana, and keep our country safe.
We can not possibly audit such broad distribution of marijuana. Nowadays, we have a difficulty time monitoring the sale of alcohol to minors, therefore we can not expect marijuana to be properly checked either. Showing us evidence of this claim, researchers Forster, McGovern, Wagenaar, Wolfson, Perry, and Anstine (1994) tell us, “youthful buyers were able to purchase beer without age identification….These results support the need for the greater attention to availability as a factor in teenage drinking” (p. 699-705). Another instance of apparent strains involving watching the masses we see is the movie theatres difficult time they have to control the people needing to follow the movie rating system. Presenting this issue to us, Giles (1994) writes, “Fourteen-year-old boys have their ways of sneaking into R-rated movies”, showing us this issue regarding theatres lack of capability to watch out for minors entering what they are not permitted to watch. Accordingly, we should not permit such a serious drug to be so easi...

The Cannabis Policy Reform Act of 2014 might not be on the ballot in this year’s election. The topic of legalizing Cannabis here in California has been around for over 20 years. After doing research on legalizing Cannabis I have found many reasons why California should legalize it, many of the reasons could benefit our economy. As well as the medical benefits it gives to many people suffering from cancer, AIDS and other illnesses. The pros and the cons both have compelling arguments but I believe that legalizing Cannabis would benefit California.
There has been an ongoing controversy in the United States on whether the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen like most of the world or if it should stay at twenty-one. Underage drinking has been a major controversial issue for years, yet why is it not under control? Teenagers are continuing to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, drink, get into bars, and drink illegally. As a teen I have proof that these things are going on not only in college but in high school as well. There are a lot of factors that come together to why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen; the most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty-one. Liquor stores, bars, and clubs all want to make money and if they can get away with selling to underage teens then they will. A study done by the Academic Search Premier agrees that, ?By now it is obvious that the law has not succeeded in preventing the under-21 group from drinking? (Michael Smith 1).
Ever since the federal criminalization of marijuana in the United States in 1937, there has been a large underground drug market (Paul). Much like how the prohibition of alcohol simply forced imbibers underground, those who chose to partake in marijuana are forced to stay away from the prying eye of the law because of present marijuana laws. This means the drug world is concealed from the average citizen, hiding the dangers of drug deals gone wrong, police shootings, and other dangerous occurrences. In a way this allows the government to mask the fact that their well-funded ‘War on Drugs’ is ineffective, a ‘War’ with a budget of roughly twenty billion dollars; which is not profoundly effective in the curbing the use of drugs (Jillette). If the average citizen does not know what is happening, in the eyes of the American zeitgeist, it is not happening. Criminalizing a harmless drug to cut down on its use simply turns its users into criminals, making the crime rate go up and clogging prisons with non-violent criminals. Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and tobacco and the laws pertaining to it should reflect that.
Proposition 64 was recently passed in California making recreational marijuana use legal. California has been among the few states that have taken this step towards accepting marijuana so far. Recreational marijuana use was not commonly accepted and was looked down upon until doctors found medical benefits in marijuana and proved it was not as harmful as the majority thought previously. The battle between whether this drug is harmful or helpful is still relevant today. Over the years, the population’s support for the legalization of marijuana has increased. Although the court case Gonzales v. Raich shows lack of support for the advancement of marijuana on the federal level, other state cases such as California Proposition 215, which allows
The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated topic for many of years. Since the first president to the most recent, our nation’s leaders have consumed the plant known as weed. With such influential figures openly using this drug why is it so frowned upon? Marijuana is considered a gateway drug, a menace to society, and mentally harmful to its consumers. For some people weed brings a sense of anxiety, dizziness, or unsettling feeling. Like alcohol, tobacco or any other drug, those chemicals may not respond well with their body. For other people marijuana brings joy, a sense of relief, and takes the edge off of every day stress. For those who are associated with cannabis, purposes usually range from a relaxant, or cash crop, to more permissible uses such as medicine, and ingredient to make so many other materials. We now need to look at what would change if marijuana were legal. Benefits to the economy and agriculture, health issues, and crime rates are three areas worth looking at. Deliberating on the pros and cons of this plant we can get a better understanding for marijuana. From there it will be easier to make a clear consensus on what is best for the nation.
The legalization of marijuana is a smoldering topic that sparks a debate anytime someone brings up the controversial subject. It is listed on the top of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) drug schedule listing as a controlled Schedule I substance. According to the DEA, “Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence.” Yet, the United States has allowed 20 states to legalize it for medicinal purposes; and, two of those states are legally allowed to use it recreationally. That makes 40% of the country obtain a prescription, while the other 4% are stoners. Why such a discrepancy? Because someone always has to make the rules, while others are just trying to break them.
Overturn it! I have chosen to research Proposition 64, legalization recreational marijuana that passed in early November 8, 2016 by the California voters. It’s a bad idea if you’re allowing an epidemic to grow and lose control with the young people. Legalizing marijuana under this new state law, allowing young twenty-one adults and licensing industry to establish standards products to plant, sell and purchase in January 1, 2018. Marijuana has been seen as a relatively harmless drug, though given the chance, it can be as harmful and deadly as alcohol or tobacco. The problems and violence cause by the use of drugs and the lack of efficient measures by the government to reduce the rise of the substances has affected both society and business.
On November 5th, 1996 Ballot Proposition 215 was approved which removed criminal penalties for the use, possession, and cultivation of marijuana by anybody who has a written recommendation from their doctor saying he/she would benefit from medicinal marijuana. In recent years, the use of recreational marijuana has increased. More and more adolescents and adults are using marijuana on a day to day basis and that number is only just increasing. Marijuana has become not a big issue in our culture. In California, the use of recreational marijuana is still illegal but with the help of the media, the horrible stigma tied along to it is surely fading. Marijuana can be used everywhere now with the tools that are available. Just recently, “vape pens” have become a big thing in society making the intake of marijuana not only more potent but more discreet. The use of recreational marijuana can be used anytime throughout the day depending on the user’s wants and needs. Many marijuana users use this drug for its health benefits. “Doctors prescribe medicinal marijuana to treat muscle spasms by mul...

The article I chose to do my summary on is an online newspaper article for the East Valley Tribune. The article itself was on the new bill that will be voted on later in the week that has been passed in four other states that gives patients who have been diagnosed with illnesses that are not curable access to new medications that have not been fully approved by the FDA. My reason for writing this is because I find new drug developments interesting and this bill was also first passed in my home state.
In America, marijuana is the most used drug after alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana is used by millions of Americans, despite the harsh laws illegalizing the drug. Some states, such as Washington and Colorado have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Efforts to legalize the drug in other states have been unsuccessful such as Proposition 19 in California, which failed in 2010 despite uptight campaigns. Billions of dollars are spent at the state, local, and federal level to fight the use of marijuana. Millions are arrested for marijuana offenses and sentenced for extended periods. Marijuana has negative effects on the human health and high potential for addiction. Legalizing marijuana will eliminate the black market, which is responsible for the increase in violence, crime, and corruption. Resources used for mass incarceration in the war on drug can be redirected to rehabilitation to decrease drug abuse and addiction.
There are many opinions about whether or not marijuana is harmful to our society. The topic is being brought every day, there are many talks about marijuana in political talks. The idea of legal use of recreational marijuana is in the near future for every state. The people are voting in favor of recreational marijuana, and the popularity is growing every day. There are so many benefits a state can have from the legalization of marijuana. The legalization of marijuana is only beneficial in today’s society is becoming more acceptable and more people are doing it. This upcoming election there are five presidential candidates that are pro marijuana, which mean there’s a high chance that there will be laws created to legalize marijuana. I believe
