Of the several challenges that ELL students may face at school, one of the most important to remember is that these students not only have the pressure of learning at the same pace of their peers that have most likely spoken English their whole lives, but they have to do so while attempting to understand the English language. Graves' makes a paramount point on page 411 of his text where he states "it is not that English language learners come to school with a language deficit. They come with a lack of knowledge of the particular language that is used in the schools they will be attending-English."1 Therefore, it is easy to assume that even the most ready-to-learn student will have huge amounts of trouble trying to learn everything in a language that is foreign to them.
The purpose of this assignment is to explain the impact of English language learners in the classroom. As a foreign student, English language learner in the United States faces multiple challenges for achieving academic success. To successfully complete a task, they need to master both English as a language and how it is used in core content classes especially when they are an adult. When trying to assist in instructing English language learners, they usually have many concepts and language abilities that they need to master, as do the teachers that are trying to teach them. With the incorporation of the concepts and approaches to identify and assess the issues and concerns that we have learned in our classroom instruction, such as lesson preparation,
Since the 1940s, new solutions to successful English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction have been discovered many times. Like bestseller novels, the latest hit pop songs, and blockbuster films, second-language theories and methodologies enjoy a few months or years in the spotlight and then fade away into oblivion due to many instructors not taking the chance to truly experiment with these instructional methods. There was always a “tried-and-true” methodology from an expert theorist, who may or may not have had first-hand experience learning a second language, to fall on. Douglas Brown, a renowned professor of San Francisco State University, notes that languages were “not being taught primarily to learn oral communication, but to learn for the sake of being ‘scholarly’ or…for reading proficiency” (15). Theories of second-language acquisition did not start to pop up until the instructional objective became oral competence and comprehension. New and effective methodologies of ESL classrooms are necessary in order for learners to obtain and understand the language and its culture; teachers need to consider their teaching style, each student’s learning style, and the classroom behavior, interests, and culture.
...tivated to learn a language. Therefore English Language Teaching methods seem to be designed with a deep focus on motivating the students. As Thornbury (2005) argues that, concerning Dogme ELT, the motivation element is likely to be covered since the learners’ voice has obtained a space in the classroom. In other words, the students ideas and needs are dealt with as a crucial fundamentals of the process. Moreover teachers’ motivation tends to be as important as students’ motivation.
When working with English language learners, it is important for the teacher to understand the importance of reducing the affective filter of the learner. The goal of an English language learner’s teacher is to present comprehensible input and ensure that the students effectively acquire the language (Steward, 2010, p. 4). In doing research on learning a second language, Krashen recognized three personal issues that affect the success or failure of English language learners. These issues are said to be motivation, self-confidence and anxiety (Zafar, 2011, p. 144). In order for an English Language Learner to acquire a second language, it is up to educators to do everything necessary to ensure the personal issues are addressed.
There are many researches added the role of attitude in the studying of foreign languages with different civilizations, English schemata, and classes. For example, Shams (2008) investigated the learners’ attitudes, motivation, and concern for English language learning. The result emphasized that there are students’ agreeing viewpoint and high eagerness to English language. It is also underlined that mostly students revealed positive viewpoint to English language and its studying highlighted the worth of English language capability in everyday
One possible reason for students’ silence in class is that most of the students learn English as an academic subject or just to fulfill in an entrance examination. Ellis (1985) argued the issues related to foreign language acquisition: learner language, external factors, and classroom second language acquisition.
Some learners do not participate mainly because the course does not interest them at all. This can be remedied...
Talking about students’ interest toward English, from the study it can be concluded that almost all of the students like English. They like to watch English movies, listen and sing English songs, and read English books for improving their vocabularies. Their liking toward English made them always waiting for English class and feeling happy and never feel bored in English subject teaching-learning
First of all, we have to find out the reason of why a people cannot learn English in an efficient way. According to Gardner and Symthe (1981), because of getting interest in something, therefore they hope to be success in learning English. This Intrinsic motivation or emotion is called English Learning Motivation. And according to Cheung Chun Hing (1996), Motivation makes a student start and maintain the learning activities. And for Learning a second language, motivation is also a really important streng...
Experiencing those days where people would laugh at other for the broken English; the grammar and pronunciation are the toughest parts of the language. People with English as a second language always stumble upon difficulties; however, the determination of learning a new language do not decrease easily as the motivation is still surrounding one’s mind. Today, English has become an international communication; even the teaching and learning of the language has already spread throughout the world. English is known as one of the most common use language and has been offering classes everywhere for years especially around Asia; additionally, the world common language has now become the number one language uses in every fields of career that is being offer everywhere. Non-American students should be required to take English class as a second language in school
In most institutions of learning today, the classes are made up of students from different ethnic backgrounds. These have different traditions and also speak different languages. In a typical classroom, the majority of the students will speak the same language. The teacher must then employ strategies which will accommodate all the students in the class. This will ensure that every learner gets the best quality of education. This will enable them to be better prepared for career and expressing themselves. In this paper, strategies to assist learners of the English language in their literal development for third grade learners. In the paper, three strategies that can be used by the teacher will be discussed. New strategies and research that will help the English language learners to gain in depth mastery of the language will also be discussed. Due to the widespread learning of the English language in most schools, addressing issues of the language learners is of vital importance. Teachers should have the understanding that cultures are what give someone identity and therefore no student should leave their culture for another. Instead, there should be the blending of different cultures so that students can appreciate and learn from each other.
A lot of foreign students don’t have the English lever required by the university, as a result, they must take the ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. These classes are extremely helpful because you learn how to properly communicate which is something needed to get by everyday activities. On the contrary, this delays students because while other students are advancing with their majors, you are still learning English. “I have no idea what I will be doing in chemical engineering since I am still taking English classes. It is very frustrating, but I guess I need this particular skill in my major” says Joyce, a Rwandese student at Michigan State
Learning English can be worthless to certain people in Malaysia. This is because they have set their mindset that learning English would not guarantee a promising future. It is a norm in Malaysia by agreeing that those who are taking science stream will have better job opportunities while those that are from art stream might not have a bright future. This mindset of theirs has caused the development of English to develop slowly in an emerging country. According to New Straits Times (2016), many graduates are not employed due to their lack of proficiency in English when it comes to speaking. The importance of learning English has never been in the back of their mind. Therefore, Malaysians should be open-minded and enhance their cognitive skills to embrace English Language as their second language because in the end their perception is what matter the most. For example, parents should be practicing their children to speak English or get them familiar with the language but at the same time not to ignore their mother tongue. In brief, Malaysians should change the way they think in order to excel in the
