Hertneky (2010) explored the concept of leadership and self-identity in twelve female college presidents. It was found that mentorship shaped their career paths and the drive to make a difference. Concepts of balance, authenticity, leading through relationships, composing a life, and learning were identified as five very important components of their careers. Leadership self-identity was described as the perception of self and is distinct from the perception that others hold about the leader. These women expressed that presidency is a role and not a job and that they were always in that role except when in the company of friends and family (Hertneky, 2010).
The concepts of balance, authenticity, leading through relationships, composing a life, and learning are critical components for a successful career in nursing. Nurses have to maintain balance with work and family, are expected to lead at some time, are life long learners to maintain competent safe care and are unique and authentic in the health care field.
Taylor and Francis (2009) reports that obesity is detrimental to quality of life and is linked to genetic and environmental factors. Obesity is a great heath threat and overwhelms health care services. Because obesity has strong environmental links, psychology can contribute by engaging in teaching that will address “the abnormalities of appetite including reduced sensitivity to satiety cues and heightened responsiveness to external cues” such as portion size and investigating the relationship between eating behavior and genetic risk (Taylor & Francis, 2009, p. 998). At Marian University, students in the undergraduate and graduate nursing program are required to submit a portfolio. In correlation to the things mentioned that influence the effectiveness of portfolios, aren’t these the same things that can influence nursing practice? Things like a good attitude, implementation of competent nursing skills, compliance with policies and nursing protocols, having support from mentors and peers, and good time management skills are all very crucial things that can make nurses better!
Nursing is a profession that requires a unique skill set. A few of the traits include compassion, understanding and empathy. Clayton State University has a goal to produce competent, compassionate, professional nurses with communication and technical skills. Clayton State’s School of Nursing has outlined nine program outcomes or concepts that are part of the Conceptual Curriculum Model. These concepts include caring, communication, critical thinking, human diversity, informatics, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing therapeutics, professional development, and theory based practice. These program outcomes relate to three nurse and client transitions; health-illness transitions, developmental transitions and organizational transitions. In health care, it is necessary to be knowledgeable and advanced in many areas in order to provide efficient care; these concepts are the foundation for a healthy nurse and client relationship.
Nursing is a complex degree, so many different subsets and divisions that it is hard for the common person to fathom. Returning to my education and rediscovering all these theories and ideas is very overwhelming. In my work I am already beginning to see myself change for the better. Work is always very stressful even more so now, and I see myself becoming a leader when in the past I would not have been. A registered nurses job is to take care of the patients and give the patients support (“Registered Nurses” para.1). To be a registered nurse, you need to have skills. If you don’t have enough skill, you need to improve them even though it takes a little hard work and motivation. You do need to be able to talk in front of people, see the patients condition, and understand the patients (Registered nurses” para.9). Registered nurses should ask appropriate questions and shouldn’t interrupt the patient. Nurses should be aware of others reactions and why they are reacting the way they are. Nurses always look for ways to help the patient. Nurses use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their patients (“Occupation” para.19). Registered nurses must provide person assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to co-workers, customers, and patients. There are many definitions with regards to leadership, but what defines 'effective leadership' and how is it evaluated? Chemers (2000) explained that effective leadership is "follower satisfaction and group performance." (p. 28) G. Yukl expalined "there is no correct definition of leadership; it is only a matter of how useful it is increasing our understanding of effective leadership."(Yukl) How does an organization establish effective leadership? While some leaders of organizations direct considerable resources to find, train, and mentor managers to be effective leaders, many leaders of organizations put little research into the subject of effective leadership. Whatever the organization's policy on selecting the leadership group is, such as to promote from within or to hire from outside, most organization's leaders make decisions without a full understanding of leadership theories. The missing aspect that many leaders and developers of leaders ignore is that the construct of leadership is not an individual endeavor, but rather one that must include the organization as a whole. Leadership is not just the sum characteristics of an individual (leader) but should include the leaders, the followers, dyadic relationships, and group relationships. Hogg and Terry (2000) explained that "organizations are internally structured groups that are located in complex networks of intergroup relations..." (p. 121).
Ziauddeen and Fletcher in this article discuss the concept of food addiction from a clinical and neuroscientific perspective. They argue that the evidence in food addiction is limited and that further research must be done in order to fully validate the concept. Despite the uncertainty, food addiction has influenced the neurobiological models of obesity and developing debates about formulation of the public health policy. Ziauddeen and Fletch also debate that because there are so many possibly pathways leading to obesity, it is unlikely that food addiction is the most effective cause. Even with their caution, they also propose there are many arguments saying many aspects of eating in obesity are “addictive.”
Obesity has been associated with energy intake and expenditure imbalance, genetics, cultural, socioeconomic, behavioral, and situational factors all play a role in eating and weight control (Bray, 2005). To get an idea of the scope of the problem, the American Journal of Health Promotion states that the rates of obesity has more than tripled among children and adolescents over the past 30 years (Gollust, 2014).
Nursing is a profession that I have always been fascinated with. Nursing is defined as "health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration and providing care to the sick and dying" (Kozier and Erb). There are five values essential to nursing, which include altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (AACN). Nursing is a profession in which the nurse uses caring as a central concept. Some other characteristics of the nursing profession include art, science, advocacy, and offering holistic care. Nurses use critical thinking in order to problem solve because every patient is unique. The nursing process when assessing a patient includes, data collection, analysis, planning, implementing, and evaluation. Nurses need to be able to deal with change in stressful, fast paced, hectic environments. The treatments and technology is constantly changing therefore nurses need to be able to make quick and important decisions.
Prior to entering the professional role of nursing, a nurse should also determine the principals and personal values that will guide their nursing practice. Personal values, past experiences, and influences of other nurses are what attract many to the profession of nursing. Nurses have a profound impact on the lives of their patients, their families, and the community. Nursing is a constant process of building a prevalent knowledge base while maintaining a sense of compassion and empathy for those during a time of need. Nursing is more than a career, it is an art form that is continuously being molded by personal experiences and the gain of knowledge; what we do with it is that defines us as nurses.
There are several nurses that have established themselves successfully in the work I am pursuing. The work mainly involves care management, client teaching and patient advocacy. Care management focuses on ensuring that the care that various health care providers offer is cohesive to meet the patients’ needs. Client teaching deals with enabling patient gain knowledge about the medications and health. Patient advocacy is involved with protecting and advancing patients’ rights.
As I reflect on my nursing education, I relieved that I have unexpectedly created a set of values and beliefs for myself, otherwise known as my personal nursing philosophy. I believe that the core of nursing is advocacy, knowledge, integrity and caring. The focus of nursing is on patient need and patient health. According to the (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017), “nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.” I believe that nursing is an art allowing the nurse to be competent,

Some people were born to be great leaders and some were born to be great learners. I ask myself this question, “How was I created?” Was I born a leader or was I molded to lead. As I explain my philosophy on how I want to lead, I will first dive into my past to recognize and pin point my creator. October 27th 2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.”
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
Nursing, for me, is more than a profession, it is a journey where I learn continuously about life changing events and miracles. Touching the lives of others or being touched by other’s story is an experience one can’t describe, only endure. Nursing is a profession of integrity and compassion, and it is the most trusted professions due to our commitment towards our patient. The quality of a good nurse is they should be caring, sensitive, kind and respectful towards their patient, and I believe I possess all these qualities that have contributed to me in my successful career of nursing. Working at Cleveland Clinic, I got a great opportunity to work with a group of doctors and coworkers who have the same mission in life and job as mine; “Put the patient first”. Making a positive impact on patient’s life, big or small, noticed or unnoticed, gives me a great sense of accomplishment and makes me proud to be a nurse.
I believe that nursing should be a holistic approach, dealing with a patient’s body, mind, and soul. It is definitely a physically demanding job, but equally as important is the demand for emotional commitment. My past academic performance, as well as my personal qualities, provides the foundation for my career. A core characteristic of a successful nurse is teamwork and the ability to act as the liaison between the patients and the other members of the patients’ care teams. Besides working well in a team, it is also important to seek out help when necessary. Another vital quality is culture competency. Prosperous nurses understand diversity, and embrace and honor, rather than judge or ignore, what makes people different. Furthermore, critical thinking skills allow nurses to recognize possible patient problems. The intellectually disciplined process enables the nurses to respond to the constant changes and needs of a patient in their charge. Lastly, the nurse’s role has a zero tolerance for error where the smallest mistake may result in a life-threatening event. To ensure patient safety, it is critical to pay attention to detail and use caution no matter how stressed or overwhelmed a person might feel. These are the core qualities that I hope to attain as a registered nurse and important goals to adhere to for as long as I’m in this
