Billboards are a great way for companies to advertise their products to different publics. We see advertisements almost every time we drive somewhere, and billboards make advertising much easier for organizations to get their name out. Billboards are defined as, “A panel for the display of advertisements in public places, such as alongside highways or on the sides of buildings” (Farlex). In this paper I will explain the historical roots of the Lamar Advertising Company, who is all involved with this mass media vehicle, where the Lamar Advertising Company is at today with their business, and I will also explain what I have learned about mass media through this assignment.
In 1891, the Associated Bill Posters’ Association was credited with being the nation’s first association of advertisers. (Universe) This allowed the Lamar Advertising Company, formerly known as the Pensacola Advertising Company, to come about. The Pensacola Advertising Company was created by J.M. Coe in 1902. In 1905, Charles W. Lamar Sr. joined a partnership with Coe. (Universe) When they decided to end their three-year joint venture in 1908, a coin toss was used to divide their assets: the Pensacola Opera House and the Pensacola Advertising Company. (Lamar) The need that this small poster company met when it was first formed was to promote the upcoming events that were to take place in the opera house located in Pensacola, Florida, that they both had owned at the time. “Mr. Lamar lost the toss and was left with the less-lucrative poster company, which he renamed Lamar Outdoor Advertising Company” (Lamar). Unknown to Charles Lamar, this coin toss won him more than he could imagine at the time.

While watching this film I gained greater insight into the intricate process that goes into the ads in which I come into contact every day. This film revealed the vast amount of advertising that surrounds me every day which I may often miss. I am now more aware that each ad I see from location to color to size has a purpose behind the choices made to create it.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.

The documentary film “The Persuaders” is a great film that captures the evolution of advertising. The film is broken up into six distinctive segments. Each segment can be viewed as a specific moment in time where advertisement evolved in order to survive in the fast paced society we live in. The film starts off with a crucial concept of standing out. The narrator mentions in the first few minutes of the film that companies are struggling to come up with new ideas for advertising. This may seem not so much of a big deal but, the narrator goes on to explain that as the years progressed, the number of advertisements increased exponentially. It had gotten to the point where people began to pay less and less attention to advertisements. One of the people interviewed for this film was Naomi Klien, author of “No Logo”. Naomi stated that consumers are like roaches, you spray them and spray them and after a while it doesn’t work anymore we develop immunities. Similar to news in its widespread marketing, publicity is another method in which people’s minds are reprogrammed, this time by the merchandisers. Publicity attempts to ingrain concepts and transmit political and commercial messages into the consumer’s minds, in an endeavor to make them buy specific goods. They do this by constantly exposing the people to the products through their repeated displayal on various mediums. Billboards and posters can be found on most highways, and in nearly all cities around the world. Consequently they push ideas at the consumer any time he/she travels on foot, by car, or even uses the public transport systems.
Analysis of an Advertisement We live in a fast-paced society that is ruled by mass media. Every day we are bombarded by images of, perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us like a slide show. These ideas and images are embedded in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audiences openly and subliminally, and target them with their product. They allude to the fact that in order to be like the people in this advertisement, you must use their product.
This book has opened a whole new perspective on advertising and the reasons we buy things and regret them later. Thinking that I have the urge for a McDonalds hamburger may feel real, or it might just be an elaborate, expensive advertising technique used to manipulate my buying behavior.

Because of that, it is difficult to keep the content of an advertisement true to the fact. Facts or benefits of a product are often exaggerated in modern advertisements. Brands create these new images of the product to expand the role of their actual service.

It becomes a significant aspect of our lives whether it has come to our acknowledgment or not. It influences us to the extent we believe the information presented in the media are “normal”.
