Knowledge Based Expert System in Transportation Engineering and Traffic Adaptive Signal Control System
I. Abstract
Advances in computer technologies have been changing transportation field. Based on those, Intelligent Transportation System has been proposed and being developed for the next generation transportation system. This system requires more utilization of Artificial Intelligence, such as Knowledge Based Expert System, than current one. Although Knowledge Based Expert System has not been robustly studied in the field of transportation, it is suggested to be implemented in Traffic Adaptive Signal Control System as a part of Intelligent Transportation System. Therefore, it is fundamental to overview that what the current position of Knowledge Based Expert System in transportation is. It will help to construct a specialized knowledge on and understand that system in Transportation. Previous applications of Knowledge Based Expert System in transportation field are briefly reviewed, and potential implementations are discussed by focusing on Traffic Adaptive Signal Control System in this paper.
Key words: Knowledge Based Expert System, Intelligent Transportation System, Traffic Adaptive Signal Control System.
II. Introduction
Advances in computing have dramatically changed the transportation field in the last decades. These enhance the speed and credit of traffic analysis and allow transportation engineers to study various problems that would not be possibly answered without computer techniques, such as simulations. On the other hand, transportation system have been experienced congestion during its peak hours. To solve this, its facilities have been expended in order to increase their capacity by means of adding addit...

Since the industrial revolution, the field of engineering has allowed society to flourish through the development of technological advances at an exponential rate. Similar to other professionals, engineers are tasked with making ethical decisions, especially during the production and distribution processes of new inventions. One field that has encountered ethical dilemmas since its inception is the automotive industry. Today, the dawn of the autonomous, self-driving, vehicle is upon us. In this new-age mode of transportation, humans will be less responsible for decisions made on the road. With the wide adoption of autonomous vehicles, there exist a possibility to reduce traffic-related accidents. Even though computers have the ability
The automobile’s invention revolutionized the American transportation system. It allowed people to move themselves and cargo from city-to-city and state-to-state in a much faster and efficient manner. Its numbers increased as it gained popularity and became affordable. This led to the development of road networks both within and between cities. Problems arose in the areas where roads intersected each other; accidents occurred at these intersections due to the lack in control of vehicular movements. Cities employed people to direct traffic at busy intersections to address this issue, but eventually the intersections became too numerous to control using this method. The development of automated traffic control devices attempted to solve this problem. Initially, these consisted of an alternating sign system that simply read stop and proceed. This system soon evolved into the method utilized today with red, amber, and green lights. However, this system could not force vehicles to stop when the light turned red and intersections still required monitoring by the police to enforce traffic regulations.
Eran Ben-Joseph, a Professor and Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, did a research on the urban driving style. Joseph has come to a conclusion stating that American tends to speed more time behind the wheel, while searching for a parking spot. Joseph also stated that parking lots tend to “cover more than a third of the land area, becoming the single most salient landscape features of our built environment.” Finding parking spots is one of the major problems, and it is one of the primary sources of waste of fuel for many in the urban areas. The need for parking spots has been significantly increasing in the recent years. According to Joseph, Americans spend more than 250 hours a yearly behind the wheel,, and 40 percent of the total gasoline are wasted while searching for parking. Self-driving car’s vehicle-to-vehicle communication is one of the major effective features for transportation. These features will enable self-driving vehicles to communicate with one another and provide real-time status information about their surrounding. This feature is believed to decrease the number of hours and energy wasted while searching for parking significantly. If one car is looking for parking, it will send a status to its surrounding cars with the same features. If these cars find a parking spot, they will send back the position of availability of parking. With these kinds of algorithms, it will most likely help the environment to become safer. In addition, the vehicle-to-vehicle communication feature will be an important factor when it comes to collision avoidance. As each car can sends out data about their position, speed, break status, and additional such data to the other vehicles within a specific distance, there will be much more efficient and people will have a safe
Transportation systems are what support the high levels of accumulation and concentration within cities. The bigger the city, the more complex its urban problems are if not properly managed. The largest transportation problems occur when public transportation systems fail to fulfill the many requirements of urban mobility. Urban efficiency is highly dependent on its transportation systems to move consumers, labor, and goods from one point to another. The most outstanding urban transportation issues in the United States are: traffic congestion, longer commuting, inadequacy of public transport, green transportation difficulty, and good distribution (Rodrigue).

Traffic collisions is one of the most unpredictable, fatal, and devastating occurrences that can take place in a individuals life. It is still undetermined what the major causes may be for traffic accidents. Some critics acclaim, that it is the lack of safety awareness by drivers. Other people believe that new safety driving education courses should be implemented and required for new drivers. They suggest that it is a vital element that can help reduce the number of traffic accidents greatly. Something also considered is the lack of experience when dealing with poor conditions of weather and roads for new drivers. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how evidence/ information play a role in traffic collisions. Next I will explain
Over the next few decades, the number of automobiles grew exponentially. But in essence there has been no paradigm shift in personal transportation since Henry Ford’s model T. Today’s cars are better versions of what Ford had built almost a century ago. The future, however, looks more interesting. Rapid industrialization and unchecked growth in population has brought to the front a myriad of problems that were unheard of
The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from locations is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. Many countries face transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes usually takes about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has become a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. To this end, Transportation Engineers are needed to design roads/ highways that will stand the test of time, plan effective traffic management systems to reduce
In today's changing business environment, information technology plays an incredibly important role in almost every aspect of the day to day life of almost every industry. The transportation industry is, of course, no different. From the transport of goods from manufacture, to warehousing, to retail, to end-user, the industry relies on information technology to get things done. The transportation of people is the exact same; incredibly important to get done yet impossible without the impact of information technology.

Recurring congestion is a major factor when looking at the efficiency that freight is moved around the country. The cause of recurring congestion is mainly from the volume of passenger vehicles and trucks on the road. The number of vehicles exceeds the capacity of the roadways during peak hours. These congestion problems exist primarily in is concentrated primarily in major metropolitan areas. In the year 2007, the congestion during peak travel hours resulted in traffic slowing below posted speed limits on 11,700 miles of the NHS. The congestion also resulted in creating stop-and-go conditions on an additional 6,700 miles of NHS.
We all use vehicles for transportation. People usually go to their desired destination either by driving their own cars or traveling in public transportation. Actually, it might be tough to choose that which one is the best selection for people to travel. Many people choose one of them according to their comfort while traveling and both of them have advantages and disadvantages in different conditions. Public transportation and driving own car both shares differences and similarities in many aspects, such as facility, cost, and comfort as well as traffic jam and accident occurrence.
Transportation Engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, traffic operation and evaluation of streets, highways, airports, and transit systems.
Traffic congestion, is one of the major problems faced in the capitals and major cities in most countries. As with the increase in the growth rate, comes the growing demand for the use of transportation. This works with the response to the needs of the community.
