Recommended: Essay on the morality of hunting

It is a beautiful, crisp spring morning, and there is not a cloud in the sky. Tommy, an avid hunter, decides to take advantage of the weather and go hunting. Quietly, he finds a spot in the woods and settles. He takes in the scenery. Hunting has become one of his favorite activities on the weekends; he doesn’t eat any of the animals he kills, but he enjoys the thrilling feeling that runs down his spine as he takes down a big buck. Suddenly, Tommy hears a rustling in the leaves. A sudden noise has alerted his senses, and he spots a squirrel scurrying up a tree. Normally, Tommy likes to take down bigger animals like deer or elk, but not this time. In the blink of an eye, Tommy shoots the squirrel in the middle of its spine and silently watches it fall from the tree. Slowly, he walks over to the animal. For a minute or two, he watches it twitch and suffer until he finally puts one last bullet in its cranium. Exhausted from his efforts, Tommy hikes back home. He has had enough hunting for the day. Little does Tommy know, killing the squirrel was actually illegal. Squirrel hunting season is not during the spring, and Tommy could face serious fines, if not possible jail time. However, crimes like Tommy’s happen every day. People kill animals when it is not the proper season, leave the carcasses to rot, and only kill for the thrill. Hunting and killing animals is inhumane and it is a sport that negatively impacts the animal population.
Though there are many arguable definitions of the verb “hunt”, Dictionary.com defines hunting as, “engaging in the pursuit, capture, or killing of wild animals for food or in sport” (Dictionary.com). ... out an animal, but the act of killing in itself should not be enjoyed. Life is precious and the ability to shatter it is a strong power to hold. In the end, hunting should not be used as an enjoyable activity because it is morally wrong and inhumane.
