Adult Cognitive Development and Wisdom Applicable to How I View Myself Within the frameworks of the concept of wisdom, the general consensus is all wise people are knowledgeable. And although the theory of wisdom and its’ components has been studied throughout history by many theorist and psychologists and from the many ideas put forth, it can be understood that wisdom cannot be taught. I currently view the definition of wisdom as; knowledge gained by an individual through a diverse set of experiences. Being asked this question at a much younger age would not have offered the current definition explained here, and this is because the development on a cognitive and rational decision-making level, based on the minor events undergone at a younger age and time had not led to diverse experiences and a high degree of knowledge …show more content…

More importantly, an overload of straining to process too much information during certain situations and circumstances in life has the propensity to cause neurological and physical damage. Bee and Bjorklund (2004, p. 143) discussed the concepts of what influences problems in older adults working memory. One explanation promotes the notion that older adults, “don’t have the mental energy or attentional resources that younger people do and their short-term memory becomes overloaded as tasks become more complex” (Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007, p. 397). This could account for the reasons why some older adults have massive strokes, heart attacks, severe anxiety and stress-related illnesses.
