The Age of Revolutions was a period from approximately 1776 to 1848 that greatly changed the world and how it runs. During this period, the old monarchies began to weaken and new governments, built on constitutions by the people, began to rise. Many important texts and ideas came about during, or greatly influenced, this period in history. Two such texts are Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s The Social Contract, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man, along with its sister text, The Declaration of the Rights of Women. Both of these texts played some role in the French Revolution, and had much to say on topics such as human nature and the meaning of freedom. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the most influential philosophers of the 18th century. His texts were banned in some nations, most notably France, but they were still widely read and deeply influenced European thought ( Reader 493). One of his most influential texts was The Social Contract, which goes into what Rousseau thought to be the best way to build a political community. In the text, Rousseau details a government wholly of the people with each individual giving of themselves and serving the general will, and receiving all as an inseparable part of the community. …show more content…
Both the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and that of Man assign freedom and the associated rights as inalienable, almost as if it is human nature to have such, nevertheless one excludes the other from said rights. That is to say, that the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen wholly excludes women from the rights it lays out. Women still must follow the laws, and can be persecuted by the law, but have not the same rights of men to participate in government. This is due to the fact that, despite the great revolution, women are condemned to forever be second class
With minor differences such as the belief that public misfortune was due to ignorance, omission, or scorn for the rights of women. Also mentioning that all women are born free and therefore are entitled to liberty, security, and especially resistance to oppression. As all men do all women should also have the right to vote in matters of the public. Along with that would come the right for a fair trial taking into account the law of nature and reason and equally can be charged and prosecuted as seen fit by the case or crime. Something very interesting in the set of laws includes the term that men and women share equally all duties and painful
Jean-Jacques Rousseau was known for his thoughts that humans are basically good and fair in their natural state but were often corrupted by the shared concepts and joint activities like property, agriculture, science, and commerce (Schmalleger, 2012). He felt that the social contract started when civilized people agreed to establish governments and systems of education that would correct the problems and inequalities that were brought on by civilization (Schmalleger, 2012). Rousseau believed in the formation of a social contract where the government system would fight off the corruption that was brought out. He felt that human rights should be applied to laws (Schmalleger,
The decleration of man was infulaned by the enlightmenment thinkers ideas and also by the decloration of independence. This document states “that’s all men are born, and shall remain equal and free in rights, have natural right” (liberty property, security) and they all have equal rights freedom for speech and religion. Voltaire believed that everyman should be allowed to have freedom of speech and their own expression of their reglious beliefs. The social contract was written by enlightenment thinker jean Jacques roussaeu in 1763. Rousseau believed in rule by the general rule. Rousseau states in his documents “ Man is born free, and everywhere his is in chains” this statement means to me that man is born free but is chained by the rules that are set by the government. The declaration of rights of man states “that every citizen has the participate in the laws
The constitution is the entire government and legal system is based on, and women wanted to be formally recognized as equal. The American Revolution could be said to have been founded on the idea that “all men are created equal”. This statement comes with a big asterisk though, as it originally only intended white, property owning men. Throughout time however, amendments were added to the constitution to make this statement more inclusive, yet until the 19th amendment women had never been included. For women who had spent their whole lives fighting for equality, the importance of seeing the federal government recognize them as equal cannot be
The Founding Fathers created the Declaration of Independence with the intention of establishing a country based on equality. Despite this intention, women were purposely left out. The first few lines of the Declaration of Independence show inequality instantly: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” (“Declaration of Independence”). The usage of “men” immediately disregards the whole other half of the population—women. What happened to them? Why were they deliberately excluded? As students, people learn that the American Revolution brought Americans independence and equality, but it is conspicuous that it did not bring everyone equality. Despite the Seneca Falls Convention and the fact that women have
In the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau he describes what he believes is the state of nature and the social contract that humans form in civilizations. This discussion mostly takes place in his book called the “Social Contract”. The first area that will be covered is what Rousseau thinks is the state of nature. This will then be followed by what he believes is the social contract that humans enter to live in normal society or civilization. The last portion will be to critic and summarize his findings.
The French Revolution was a period of time in which France underwent many changes, many which could be considered revolutionary. France’s whole system and way of being was completely changed. New ideas were proposed everyday. An idea is revolutionary when it is a new idea, when it is something that has never been thought of before. The Declaration of the Rights of Women written by Olympe de Gouges on September 1791, was one of the ideas proposed to the National Assembly (Hunt, Web 1). The document proposed that since the French Revolution was all about finding equality for all people, women should be equal to men and therefore, should have the same rights as men did. Women at the time live in terrible conditions. They had little access to education, and therefore could not enter professional occupations that required advanced education, were legally deprived of the right to vote, and were not considered citizens (Class Discussion Notes). If equal rights were not given to women, the French Revolution had not reached its full potential, according to Gouges. She expressed this idea in her document, saying, “This revolution will only take effect when all women become fully aware of their deplorable condition, and of the rights they have lost in society” (Gouges, Web). Anyone that questioned the Revolution was immediately put to death (Class Discussion Notes). If Gouges’ document and ideas were important enough to catch the attention of the National Assembly and for her to be put to death, her ideas could be considered important and revolutionary (Britannica, Web 1) But, the document was not revolutionary. The Declaration of the Rights of Women was not a revolutionary document because its ideas were taken from other people and were no...

Today many historians believe that this declaration that they drafted was a great turning point for women's rights. And they were right indeed, seeing that this convention would soon lead to women gradually gaining rights so that they would eventually be equal to the rights of a male. Today it is still debated whether women are still discriminated against. I believe in some unfortunate cases this is true, but for the most part women have gained equal rights to males. These women believed that all men and women are created equal, they have certain rights: among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness....
On August 26, 1789, the assembly issued the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.” Through judicial matters, this document was written in order to secure due process and to create self-government among the French citizens. This document offered to the world and especially to the French citizens a summary of the morals and values of the Revolution, while in turn justifying the destruction of a government; especially in this case the French government, based upon autocracy of the ruler and advantage. The formation of a new government based upon the indisputable rights of the individuals of France through liberty and political uniformity.

Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau developed theories on human nature and how men govern themselves. With the passing of time, political views on the philosophy of government gradually changed. Despite their differences, Hobbes and Rousseau, both became two of the most influential political theorists in the world. Their ideas and philosophies spread all over the world influencing the creation of many new governments. These theorists all recognize that people develop a social contract within their society, but have differing views on what exactly the social contract is and how it is established. By way of the differing versions of the social contract Hobbes and Rousseau agreed that certain freedoms had been surrendered for a society’s protection and emphasizing the government’s definite responsibilities to its citizens.
The political philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Karl Marx examined the role that the state played and its relationship to its citizen’s participation and access to the political economy during different struggles and tumultuous times. Rousseau was a believer of the concept of social contract with limits established by the good will and community participation of citizens while government receives its powers given to it. Karl Marx believed that power was to be taken by the people through the elimination of the upper class bourgeois’ personal property and capital. While both philosophers created a different approach to establishing the governing principles of their beliefs they do share a similar concept of eliminating ownership of capital and distributions from the government. Studying the different approaches will let us show the similarities of principles that eliminate abuse of power and concentration of wealth by few, and allow access for all. To further evaluate these similarities, we must first understand the primary principles of each of the philosophers’ concepts.
Inspired by the Declaration of” The Rights of Man and Citizen” in which the women had been excluded, Olympe drafted this document advocating for the civil liberties of women. Through the declaration of the rights of women, Olympe de Gouges demanded the right of women to education, the right to vote, and above all, the right to freedom of expression. Unfortunately, the declaration did not get a favorable acceptance. Despite being written in a historical moment in which social democracy was advocated and the fact that women contributed so much to the French revolutionary process, the declaration of the rights of women was
John Locke’s social contract theory applies to all types of societies in any time era. Although, Jean-Jacques Rousseau did write during the Renaissance era, his philosophy limits itself to fix the problem of an absolute monarchy and fails to resolve other types of societies. These philosophers have such profound impacts on modern day societies. For example, the United States’ general will is codified in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, meanwhile individual rights are distinguished in the Declaration of
