What is slavery? Is there a difference between modern slavery and slavery? Is it important? Slavery has been in the world over twenty million to thirty millions of years (This needs to be cited in the text(Last name, date)). Modern slavery still exist in America it is an important thing to be caution of. Even though slavery is known as a past thing a lot of people believe it’s all over, or is it? Slavery is something no one should go through, I believe everyone has their own rights and should decide how they live their lives and nobody should beat them down or tell them how things are supposed to be. Will this ever stop? Who will actually step up to the people that are in charge? How would the world be if slavery never existed?
According to the International Labor Organization there are 20.9 million of men, women, and children involved in today’s modern slavery. People are still forced to be sold still, they’re also forced to work where they don’t want to with getting paid or not. If someone is in slavery they are either owned or control by their “employer”, usually by mental or physical control abuse or threat of abuse. Also they are physically constrained or has restrictions in his/hers freedom of movement in another way they have no freedom unless their “owner decides for them when they will have their freedom. Finally the types of slavery that are still going on are “Bonded labour, child slavery, early and forced for marriage, forced labour, decent-based slavery, and trafficking”. A lot of people think slavery doesn’t happen no more but it really is.

Finally I think people should be more interested because what if everything comes back? So they could at least have a plan if it were to eve come back. This is how modern slavery is now and what has been happening in the world while everyone thinks it doesn’t exists no more.

The author Kevin Bales ,and co-writer Ron Soodalter, discuss the issues pertaining to forced labor in “Slavery in The Land of The Free”. Free The Slaves is a non-profit organization in Washington that Bales founded to help end slavery not only in the United States, but around the world. The Abraham Lincoln Institute has the honor to have the established historian, Soodalter, serve on it’s board.The two authors also wrote a book by the name of “The Slave Next Door: Human trafficking and Slavery in America Today” (2009). Between 1800 and 1860 slavery in the American South had become a ‘peculiar institution’ during these times. Although it may have seemed that the worst was over when it came to slavery, it had just begun. The time gap within 1800 and 1860 had slavery at an all time high from what it looks like. As soon as the cotton production had become a long staple trade source it gave more reason for slavery to exist. Varieties of slavery were instituted as well, especially once international slave trading was banned in America after 1808, they had to think of a way to keep it going – which they did. Nonetheless, slavery in the American South had never declined; it may have just come to a halt for a long while, but during this time between 1800 and 1860, it shows it could have been at an all time high.

Slavery has always been a large issue and possibly always will. The issues of today are often negative but did you know that back in ancient Roman times they were all for it? Well they were! The question that will be answered in this assessment is "In what ways, if any, has slavery changed from ancient to modern times?" I believe that slavery has changed very much from the past. Not that there may be more or less of it, but that it may be harsher and have worse conditions.

Every day women, children, and even men are kidnapped, taken from their families, and forced into free labor and sexual exploitation. According to a new report from the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, as many as 9,298 cases of human trafficking have been reported in the past five years, but these are only the instances in which it has been reported. Furthermore, the report also shows that from December 7th, 2007 to December 31st, 2012, cases of human trafficking were reported in all 50 states. Just how many more are under the radar? One of the definitions given for slavery is the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune.

Slavery became an established activity in America by 1600’s. The slaves were mostly to provide free and cheap labor. Apart from America, slavery was practiced in other parts of the world throughout history, and in fact it can be traced back to the time of the ancient civilization. With industrial revolution especially with the rise of sugar plantations, the slaves were used to grow sugar in the periods from 1100.This intensified between 1400 and 1500 when Portugal and Spain ventured into sugar growing in the Eastern Atlantic regions. The growth of the plantations required labor, hence African slaves were bought from Africa, to provide labor.

During the era of 1450-1750 CE, the characteristics of human slavery throughout the world started as a system of assistance gained from the capturing of enemy soldiers and adopting them into the victors society, but changed to a large trafficking business reaching overseas, and then to inherited positions gained from being born into slavery. However, throughout this time period, slavery continued to center in Africa and the Middle East, and remained a prime source of human labor in every society, due to their ability to be easily obtained and cheaply managed.
Anytime we hear the word “slavery”, we tend to think of the Southern United States during the Pre-Civil War era. What many people don’t know, is that this horrible act has occurred worldwide! The meaning of slavery has a different meaning today than it did years ago. As Alex Haley wrote, slavery was difficult to explain years ago because it was going on at the time. Today when someone says the word slavery more than half of the people would think of plantations and people being forced to work the land and being mistreated. But what do you say to a little child who comes up to you and asks you want slavery is? In today’s society we can take the word slavery and put it to the modern days. Would one say that slavery only existed years ago when plantation owners would buy people to force them to do hard labor and mistreat them, or would one mention about the slavery that goes on in today’s society? What about the people who are forced to do hard labor like many years ago?
Slavery has been around since the dawn of humanity coming together to form a civilization. It can be found throughout history. In the age of the Roman Empire slaves accumulated to around 30 percent of their total population and consisted of barbarians that couldn’t speak their language (Walter Scheidel 2007). But the most well-known and most recent is the Atlantic Slave trade which differs from all other periods of slavery for four key reasons. The Atlantic slavery trade lasted nearly four centuries; the targeted group was black African men, women, and children (UNESCO 2014). Along with the development of a consumer culture in where luxury resources become necessities, and finally it is believed to be the first system to be globalized, making it an important mark of history.
The last form of slavery that exists in the modern world is contract slavery. This type of slavery is when contracts are offered to people to work in factories or workshops, but once transported they then discovered the contracts were not real and learned they have become slaves (Professor Jun, Lecture, 2014). Usually these types of contracts are offered to people who are in desperate need of employment and will fall for anything in order to make slavery look legitimate. Also these so called “contract workers” are really slaves who are forced by violence, lack freedom, and paid nothing. One of the best examples of contract slavery today is in the country of Brazil.
