In Oliver Stone's classic Wall Street, which came out in 1987, there is a monologue that will transcend time, and be forever associated with Wall Street and the ultra-wealthy. “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind.” This dramatic speech was given by Gordon Gekko (played by Micheal Douglas) a wealthy businessman, who through this speech is trying to convey the message that greed leads to overall personal, and economic growth. However, many wonder if this is true, can greed ever really be good? Also, is the director Oliver Stone trying to make a statement about corporate America and the ultra wealthy?
Is greed good? well it depends on which way you look at it, and the people you talk to. Greed as defined by Webster's dictionary is “the selfish and excessive desire for more of something than is necessary” Many business people of the world believe that greed is the driving incentive for any person to produce a product. These people believe that if we didn't have greed, no one would bother going to school or work, because what would be the point? There would be no driving factor to make a person want to do anything. However, business people have a flaw in their argument, they believe that money is the only incentive for a person to do anything. Their mind cannot fathom the thought of a person being generous or charitable when they unable to receive a monetary compensation. Oliver Stone uses Gordon Gekko as a symbol of corporate greed in the United States, culminating in his Gekko's famous monologue. Stone however, disagrees with the main theme in that monologue that greed is good. I also believe that greed is not good. Looking around at the world especially in this day in age, corporate bankers are pulling in million dollar bonuses as their companies fail, their customers default on their loans is one of the sickest and most disturbing acts of greed that the world has ever seen. I do not believe that anyone who has lived through the past recession will ever consider greed to be a good thing.

At this time, Vanderbilt had emerged as a top leader in the railroad industry during the 19th century and eventually became the richest man in America. Vanderbilt is making it abundantly clear to Americans that his only objective is to acquire as much wealth as possible even if it is at the expense of every day citizens. Another man who echoed such sentiments is Andrew Carnegie. In an excerpt from the North American Review, Carnegie takes Vanderbilt’s ideas even further and advocates for the concentration of business and wealth into the hands of a few (Document 3). Carnegie suggests that such a separation between the rich and the poor “insures survival of the fittest in every department” and encourages competition, thus, benefiting society as a whole. Carnegie, a steel tycoon and one of the wealthiest businessmen to date, continuously voiced his approval of an ideology known as Social Darwinism which essentially models the “survival of the fittest” sentiment expressed by Carnegie and others. In the “Gospel of wealth”, Andrew Carnegie argues that it is the duty of the wealthy entrepreneur who has amassed a great fortune during their lifetime, to give back to those less fortunate. Greed and selfishness may force some readers to see these arguments as preposterous; however, greed is a key ingredient in successful competition. It forces competitors to perform at a higher level than their peers in hopes of obtaining more money and individual wealth. A capitalist society that allows this wealth to accumulate in the hands of the few might be beneficial to the human race because it could promote competition between companies; it might ensure health care for everyone no matter their social standing, and parks and recreation could be built for the enjoyment of society.
The completely greed-based society is just but an orgy of sin. Extreme and radical changes must be made for one to be able to avoid evil. The human mind is very powerful and is able to distinguish what is good and bad. This is associated with the freedom to choose between what right and what is wrong. One can only control external if evil if he or she can defeat the evil within him or her. Confession is the best way to do away with the internal evil.

Bud Fox was an honest living man who had good ethics but was later showed what true power is became money hungry. The power of greed is fascinating the code that everyone lives by is inevitable once money comes into play. There are five types of interpersonal power; reward power, coercive power, legitimate power, referent power, and expert power. Greed is a natural consequence of trying to get the most for the least. From the beginning, humans have been greedy to the point where now it is part of being human to be greedy. There is no person on Earth that has never been greedy and there never will be. The first person who walks this planet without having ever been greedy will no longer be human. Greed is valuable to self, to society, and to our species. Humans act like a swarm, when everyone follows their own personal interests; we appear to be following an organized pattern. From chaos a perfect order is born. An order governed solely by greed.
