Introduction The importance of having an MBA for a successful career has been greatly debated since the first time it was introduced in 1900. The aim of this essay is to determine whether an MBA degree is essential to a successful career in business or perhaps there are other factors such as experience that is more important than mastering the business degree. The price of getting an MBA is increasing every year while the return of investment (roi) is dropping significantly at the same time. (Byrne, 2012) Although obtaining an MBA is becoming more expensive, MBA degree is still vital in today’s competitive world because not only it can potentially improve one’s management skills it can also boost confidence which cannot be expressed in the form of currency. MBA serves as a stepping stone to a successful career. Experience Versus MBA Degree Some people believe that having a good job experience is better than having an MBA degree certificate. According to a Qantas spokeswoman, “We think of executive development on the basis of 70 per cent coming from on the job experiences… and only 10 percent from formal type development” (Financial Review, 2013). Job experience is important but mastery is also as important. Without the theories and knowledge the experience is limited. Experience cannot be expanded when theories are not applied. But theories without experience are also futile because one can know about all the theories about management but might not be able to apply it in real world. Both experience and theories are equally important. (Gosling and Mintzberg, 2004) Experience cannot be measured hence it is hard for employers to judge the qualification solely based on the experience. It is possible to record experiences but it can... ... middle of paper ... ...ew, 2013) Alumni network can open up to new opportunities such as starting up business venture. If MBA is measured in monetary term, people argue that getting MBA is not worth it anymore because the return of investment for getting an MBA is very low. But factors such as confidence and networks cannot be monetized. To some people the benefit they get from confidence and networks outweigh the cost of getting MBA Conclusion In conclusion, to some extent mastering the business degree is essential to a successful career in business. MBA might not significantly improve one’s chance of getting hired or job performance but it can significantly improve confidence which to some people is invaluable. Working experience is important for a successful business but it is not more important than having an MBA degree. Both working experience and having an MBA degree is essential.
An MBA degree is an advanced business degree that can open many doors in the workplace. It can lead to careers in management, finance, human resources and operations. Many people are under the assumption that a business education is necessary in order to pursue this type of advanced degree. Many people believe different ideas of why business degrees are not so great. I asked around and a few people answered. “You have to deal with your own financial problems, have to deal with employees, ability to manage time wisely, have to create a business that is not going to fail or help run a company that is not going to fail” (Kylie Kassa. 10/29/15. Interview) Other reasons why business degrees are not that great is that tons of people go after business degrees, and you do not even need a business degree to work in business. “One in every five new college grads is a business major” and “An employer survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers indicates that workplaces most value three skills: Communication, Analytic, and Teamwork skills. (CBSNEWS.com. 8 Reasons Not to Get a Business Degree. 2011.
Just going to college itself is valuable in building all of the skills as experience is more important than instruction in many cases. That being said most of the skills in the Employability Skills 2000+ are covered thoroughly in Business Administration Certificate program, at least as far as possible in a single year of education. There is an emphasis on the fundamental skills and a further focus on the communication portion of that set of skills, and a desire to teach these skills through experience (assignments) instead of instruction.
David Leonhardt states that “Education helps people do higher skilled work, get jobs with better paying companies or open their own businesses.” Although college has many time consuming steps to receive your degree, it is all worth the wait. I strongly side with Leonhardt for one reason, by having a college education you have a higher percentage rate of getting a higher paying job than those that have no college education. By possessing a degree from college you are eye candy to many businesses, businesses look and will hire an individual with a college education not only in the view of having a degree in a certain work area, but they are experienced and well informed. Businesses will not want to hire someone with no knowledge of the field of work, even if they understand what they are doing. Businesses look for and go with their natural instinct, the instinct to hire someone that is erudite of what they are doing. If you look at it from the perspective of a local business you will favor to hire someone with the degree

Today with the job market as versatile as it is in the computer field, a degree is a very valuable asset even though a job can be obtained without it. There are many students who feel that work experience is much more beneficial than the actual degree. Look at Bill Gates whom left Harvard to co-found Microsoft (Morneau).

Over the past decade, it has become a sad truth that students put themselves in debt for countless years to obtain a college degree. They attend school for long hours and run through mental hoops in stressful conditions present in skilled careers. However, despite this, students still attend because they believe that benefits of an education will help them succeed in the grand scheme of things. Having a degree shows the student has put in the effort and heart to work in a special field of interest, and that he has the ability to handle the demands and pressures of a work

The further education in today’s modern world is extremely important because of the sheer competition for jobs. An MBA significantly increases the hiring opportunities and improves a persons career choices significantly. My research found that a number of huge companies actually required an MBA to even get a first interview. The MBA teaches different techniques from companies and the undergraduate degrees, so you learn skills that are essentially very much exclusive to graduate business programs.
