It is definitely stated that younger people (17-24 years) conform more in the school/work than older people (25 years). People in 17 - 24 tend to avoid agreeing in others ideas because they know that it is bad ideas. There reason that might explain this situation is that people in 17-24 years old want to get more attention in their friends, teachers, or even family. One way to get the attention is to be different because people can recognize the independent easily. For example, if in the group they come with a different idea from the majority of the group, all of the attention will switch to the independent. The majority want to know what idea that the independents offer. The more they can get attention to others, the happier they are. In addition, It can be seen also from the result of the survey that people in 17-24 tend to be more unique and different to others compare to older people.
Another reason is that 17-24 years old is the era of people that want to know everything they want. Become a conformist means people 17-24 years will follow the majority, whereas they are likely want to try different way so that they can take the experience from what they have done. The high curiosity is one of the reasons they want to be different as well.
In fact the conformity is not only happened in the school or work situation but also happened in the society. Conformity can be seen when people obey tend to obey to the norms in society since conformity is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs and behaviour to group norms (Cialdini and Goldstein, 2004). However, the result of the survey states the similar conclusion. It is clearly stated in the result of the survey that people in 17-24 years more rarely to conform to the norms in the society, so people over 25 years in this case indicate that more act conformity. It is appeared because people in the group 17-24 is likely to do first then think after or they just do whatever they want without thinking if they have breaking regulations. As a result they often break the rule or norms. On the other hand people over 25 years know about the norms and because of the level of maturity they can think wisely. Furthermore, they know what consequences when they disobey the norms, so they will think twice to break the rule or norms.
Conformity is defined as the occurrence of people yielding to social pressures as a result of pressure from a group of their peers; when faced by the pressure to conform, people will alter their behaviour and actions to fit the norm demonstrated by their peers (Lilienfield et al., 2012). Conformity is studied so that is can be understood and used in society to facilitate positive outcomes, and help avoid situations where peoples’ predisposition to conform leads to negative consequences (Lilienfield et al., 2012). By understanding conformity and other social processes society as a whole is able to understand themselves better and motivates them to work on improving as a whole (Lilienfield et al., 2012).
The most popular age to do so are teenagers as one can depict. If all people conformed to one another, individuality would never be heard of. An opposite way to think of this is that without conformity, the common society would not be able to work together. People tend to believe this due to the fact that without agreement, there is chaos. No one would have courage to stand up for what they believe in, what they like, and most importantly, who they are. One will usually believe that after conforming to fit others for a while, one may begin to lose themselves. All in all, conforming may seem to be the only option to people in order not drag attention to themselves in certain situations. author Alexander Robbins states: “From the age of five children increasingly exclude peers who don’t conform to group norms. Children learn this quickly. A popular Indiana eighth grader told me ‘I have to be the same as everybody else, or people won’t like me anymore’” (150). The human brain is wired such that children will end friendships with kids that they find different. Robbins finds this behavior to be undesirable saying that it is not only unappealing, but it is a cop-out. In agreement with Robbins, parents across the world, organizations, and teen movies tell society that conformity is bad and that children should not conform to the group, rather they should stand alone and be individuals. However, Solomon Asch’s study may have discovered why this is. He concluded that: “The investigations described in this series are concerned with the independence and lack of independence in the face of group pressure” (1). Asch determines that in the face of pressure people are more apt to conform.
Conformity means a change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. As a teenager, the pressure to conform to the societal “norm” plays a major role in shaping one’s character. Whether this means doing what social groups want or expect you to do or changing who you are to fit in. During class, we watched films such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club which demonstrate how the pressure to conform into society can change who you are. In the movies we have seen, conformity was most common during high school.
As we grow up we are told to be individuals, but once we grow up we obey authority figures and change our beliefs to fit in with others. No matter what age we are we will always comply to a behavior or belief to fit in with a group different than ours or to be liked. It is very common to see conformity among young people, especially when large groups of young people are constantly around each other. School is one example where conformity is rampant. For some reason people tend to gravitate towards what others are doing. In Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, Never Let Me Go, the characters are no different from any other young person in that they tend to conform. Ishiguro shows this conformity to prove that conformity stems from the want to fit in and pure ignorance. At Hailsham, the students conform just to fit in with the rest of the students, but they also conform because they do not know any better.
The concepts of conformity and obedience have been around since mankind first started to form communities. The social construct theory explains how groups of people came together and worked for the greater good. The individuals in these groups gave up some independence in exchange for the increased safety that groups provide. Obedience to the leaders and rules of these groups guarantees the protection. Since rules can govern behavior, these groups set up a situation where conformity due to informational influence was often a needed practice.

There are several forms of social influences, such as conformity, which I will be discussing. Why we conform has been a topic of considerable interest to social psychologists in particular such as he classic and well-known studies of Muzafer Sherif and Solomon Asch. In addition to researching why we conform, there’s also the question of whether conformity is good or bad.
