Looking at all married couples in 2010 regardless of when they married , so-called "intermarriages" reached an all-time high of 8.4% in 2010 compared to 3.2% in 1980 the study said"(Hayes). Interracial marriage occurs when two people of differing racial groups marry. Throughout the years, interracial marriages have reached new high. Interracial marriages are a new way to experience love because more people are trying this type of dating and they are spreading their experiences. These experiences can be strange to a person who never tried it but that should not stop them. A person should try everything in life at least once so they can at least say that they tried but they just did not like the outcome. Interracial marriages or dating is very similar to regularly dating someone within the same race. When anyone tries dating, they have to go through people that they do not really like to know exactly what they are looking for. If people never try to date outside their race, then how would they know that they are completely opposed to the idea. The statistics are becoming more impressive and as more people educate themselves on the positives and negatives of interracial dating and marriages there can be an even greater increase in the statistics. Although dating interracially has had a lot of problems in the past, more people should marry interracially because it could lead to stronger marriages, better future for the kids who are a product of interracial marriage and it could repair racial bridges....

But what if you are a White female in a family that is very much against interracial marriage and you are in love with a Black man, or vice versa, if you are a Black woman in love with a White man who’s family is very secluded to the fact that interracial couples are becoming accepted amongst the 21st century. This exact conflict is represented in the movie Little White Lie. In the movie, Lacey’s mom, Peggy, had an affair and got pregnant by a black man. Peggy states “The fact is if the man with whom I had the affair hadn 't been Black none of this would have come out.” Meaning in the days when the affair has happened, 1968, it was considered so wrong to be in an interracial relationship that the only reason it was a big deal for Peggy to be having an affair was not because of the affair itself but because the affair was with a Black man. Today this belief of segregation among marriage or White and Black still exists, it’s just is not as strong. In today's society, relationships of all different kinds become more and more accepted each day. However, when it comes to interracial relationships, people still hold opposing viewpoints on the matter. For the most part, peoples' viewpoints all boil down to two beliefs; the traditional belief and the popular culture belief. People who follow the traditional belief are seen as more proud of and loyal to their culture/heritage and tend to be more segregated than others. They feel that when someone of their own culture dates someone outside of their own culture, he or she is "wanting to escape" from his or her cultural identity. Before 1967, interracial unions were illegal. Once the legislature overturned the ruling of the laws against interracial unions, the biracial population increased. Census data reveals that the US’ multiracial population has approached more than nine million individuals. In 1997, due to this dramatic increase, a change was made which allowed the biracial population to check off more than one racial category on the 2000 United States Census. This feat was not accomplished without controversy. A federal task force was set up to investigate the political and social implications of creating a new racial classification....
Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
1. Since interracial marriage became legal in 1967, only 7.5 percent of marriages are between people of different races. This means America is progressing, but it is not yet “color-blind”. People of different races are starting to date more (which shows the progression) but it is less likely to lead to marriage, compared to same race couples. Henderson and Rockquemore talk about how Americans believe we have developed a “color-blind” society, but they don’t specify what American think that or where the information comes from. This means the Americans they are referring to could all be in same race relationships. If that is the case, then the people who it matters to the most, the people in interracial relationships, might not think the same. Henderson and Rockquemore then go on to say, people in interracial relationships feel unique external pressures due to racism,
Marriage is the foundation of modern society and has historically been present in most civilizations. Marriage is associated with many positive health outcomes and is encouraged across most racial/ethnic groups. According to Sbarra, Law, and Portley (2011), the social institution of marriage has changed much since the 19th century especially in the way it can be terminated. Married African American or Black men are happier, make more money, are less likely to face poverty, and choose healthier behaviors than their counterparts that are divorced (Bachman, Clayton, Glenn, Malone-Colon, & Roberts, 2005). The converse is true for Black women who seem to be the only sub-group not to achieve the universal health and other benefits gained from marriage (Bachman, et al., 2005). This paradox in marital benefits have many implications including lower martial satisfaction and divorce.
The most broadly accepted explanations for marital breakdown are essentially race-blind: greater acceptance of nonmarital sex and unwed parenthood so that young people feel less need to marry, widespread affluence so that it is easier to leave an unhappy marriage, less emotional and economic gain from marriage so that there is less reason to get married, and welfare’s marriage penalties that discourage low-income couples from marrying. When a person of color is in a relationship with a white person, their relationship is often met with great tension. The history of issues with interracial relationships in the United States is long. Loving someone across the color line was once illegal, but now that segregation is over, more people are having interracial relationships.
Many would agree that segregation is no longer a pressing issue. Although it has been outlawed since 1954, society still implements a similar mindset, especially directed towards interracial dating. Some still believe that people of different races should not form relationships, while others deem it as acceptable. The following researchers use methods like surveys and interviews to analyze the connections between societal judgment and involvement in such relationships. Each study, providing slightly more insight than the previous, suggests the fear of social conflict creates skepticism towards mixed relations.
The previously discussed reading, Brown by Rodriguez, is an introduction to the idea of being “brown” and the implications that come along with that identity. He states that it is a gray area because people in the category do not have the privileges of being white or receive the repercussions for being black. “Assimilation” and “Who’s Irish?” are both continuations of this idea. The two short readings are different in their plots, but address several overlapping ideas.
Adoption is the complete and permanent transfer of parental rights and obligations, usually from one set of legal parents to adoptive parents(Ademec 27). Not until the late 19th century did the U.S. legislative body grant legal status to adoptive parents. This is when children and parents started to gain rights and support from the government. Through the years new laws have been passed and amended to keep the system fair to all adoptive parents. In 1994, Congress passed the Multiethnic Placement Act, making it illegal to delay the placement a child to find a racially matching family. In 1996 the Multiethnic Placement Act was amended to say, “One can not use race as a routine consideration in child placement”(Lewin sec.A). Before 1994, it was difficult to place a black child with white adopters. Last year 5,000 children were adopted from Europe, and 6,000 from Asia, while 183 came from Africa.(Lewin sec. A). The number of out-of-country adoptions are so high because of the requirements and regulations one must follow in the U.S. The requirements include being 21, and include being committed and loving. The home income must be adequate enough to support the family. Passing all of the medical exams and filling out the personal information is mandatory. But the main reason people adopt from overseas is because it is much quicker. A person can adopt a child from another country in a matter of months. In the U.S. the wait can exceed 5 years, which is why some people choose international adoption.

As stated earlier we live in a very individualistic society and people are often encouraged to do what is best for them. However, this does not apply to interracial relationships. For many, parental approval plays a huge role in interracial relationships. Those who do tend to disapprove of interracial relationships are older and don’t have a strong religious connection. In a study done on college student’s thoughts on interracial relationships, most of the students stated that their parents would disapprove of the relationship no matter the race, age, or gender (Fields 2013). In this same study males thought that their parents would have a higher level of approval of their interracial relationship than females did (Fields 2013). The fact that females experience more disapproval in interracial relationships is not surprising because as stated earlier it is historically expected for parents to have parental control over their daughters’ relationships. Interviews I selected my mother and grandfather for the interview because they had the strongest opinions and reactions to this family event and because they are both parental figures in my sister’s life. The short story “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, and Halfie” by Junot Diaz is the main character, Yunior’s, guide to dating girls of different races and the ways to act in order to get what you want from them. The only thing Yunior seems to want for these girls is sexual acts. This short story argues that a person’s heritage, economic class, and race affect how a person identifies themselves, and how their identity affects how they act towards other people. The pressures a person may feel from society also has an effect on how a person treats themselves and others. The pressure and expectations from society are also what makes Yunior think he needs to have sex with these girls. There are many different occasions of the main character talking and acting differently to other people within the story, such as: to himself, his friends, and the different girls he tries to date.
