Internships are a learning experience of new skills and improving on previous skills that you have gained.
I have through the school tours been training to be a docent, but one day in the past two weeks I had official docent training with other students. Everyone learned the story of the Eel-Stowe and Nathan Clark-Stockade house. Also, we were taught where the lights were in each house, and how to uncover the windows, objects, and hide the covering before the visitors came to the house. Then we learned how to cover the windows and the objects once the day was done. We were told some artifacts that young children may handle when they are visiting the houses for the day. Everyone received schedules and information packets in order to learn how to give a tour through the houses. I helped inform the other docents in training about some history that Ardienne did not say and helped to answer some minor questions.
I arrived at 12:30 to help set up for the Milford Historical Societies open house. I talked to Dave about the Eel-Stowe house history, since I will start showing tours in that house for next Saturday. I watched him give a tour to some visitors, who came to the Milford Historical Society. Then I led those visitors to the Clark-Stockade house where I gave a complete tour of the four rooms in there. There were not many visitors to the Milford Historical Society. I only gave two tours, but I gave them completely on my own with no prompting or help. I led tourists to the Bryan-Downs house for refreshments. Also, I answered the visitor’s questions about pieces I did not discuss during the tour.

...o about ten people. I told them all about the Nathan Clark Stockade House. I started in the South Parlor, then the kitchen, then the minor bedroom, and finally the North parlor. The last three hours I gave tours in the Eel-Stowe house to visitors. I showed all six rooms to the visitors, which were the parlor, Stephan’s office, the kitchen, the parent’s bedroom, Esters bedroom, and the boy’s bedroom. In both tours I answered questions about objects they wanted further explanation on during the tours. I gave ten tours in the total of the six hours that ranged from twenty to thirty minutes each. Also, I assisted fellow docents in other tours they were having when I was waiting for visitors. Therefore, with all the events and participation I am quite far along in my internship.
I worked 31.5 hours in the past week so I have completed 62 hours of my internship.
This past summer, when I lived and worked in Washington, DC—first as a U.S. Senate Page and then as a Congressional Intern—I gained invaluable experience and insight to the American political system. It is amazing how much one can learn from simply overhearing the conversations of Members of Congress on a daily basis. Working on the floor of the Senate and then in the back rooms of a Congressional office were two entirely different experiences, each teaching me in a distinctive way about how our political system functions. While I most definitely became aware of how bureaucratic and slow our democratic system can be, I also discovered that with a commitment to unity and prosperity for the common good, great feats are attainable through government.
On Friday, April first I will be attending Selu, and leading the living room. Selu is an old farmhouse that was restored to show off history in an interactive and hands on kind of way. For this Selu event, I will be in the living room, where the focus is on the radio, the sewing machine and the casual presence of a bed. At this presentation I will do my best to fill the minutes with factual and interesting information that is related to the beautiful farm home. I am looking forward to also meeting a bunch of fifth graders and gaining more experience by volunteering and entertaining the students in an educational way.
After visiting my grandparents several times I began to explore the hospital floor. Although shy at first, I began to talk with the patients and better understand their situations and difficulties. Each patient had his or her unique experiences. This diversity sparked an interest to know each patients individualized story. Some transcended the normal capacity to live by surviving the Holocaust. Others lived through the Second World War and the explosive 1960’s. It was at this time I had begun to service the community. Whenever a patient needed a beverage like a soda from the machine or an extra applesauce from the cafeteria, I would retrieve it. If a patient needed a nurse I would go to the reception desk and ask for one. Sometimes I played checkers or chess with them during lunch break. I also helped by mashing their food to make it easier to swallow. Soon, however, I realized that the one thing they devoured most and had an unquenchable thirst for was attention and the desire to express their thoughts and feelings. Ms. Phillips met us in the waiting area and walked us through the very spacious building to the elevator, taking us to her office on the third floor. She explained to us that the building was once a hospital (W. Phillips, personal communication, October 4th, 2013). This explained the wide doorways, spacious halls, drab atmosphere, and considerable amount of walking it takes to get from one place to the next. Ms. Phillips’ office had very welcoming in décor. Pictures of her child and what seemed to be his artwork, and the work of other children, decorated almost every available wall space. This reflection paper is divided into five main sections. The first section gives a general introduction of internship that I was doing during my internship period. The second section provides an overview of the internship practice and tasks that I was assigned to do. The third section is about the office technologies I used during the internship. The fourth section is about the benefits of the RCBC Paralegal Program courses taken as applied to the work that I performed. The final section is devoted to the knowledge and experience that I gained during the course of internship.
The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as an intern taught me the responsibility of time management and working within a lean schedule that allow me to further develop my skill set. This reflection paper will illustrate my classroom experience, internship experience, and learning experience.

My internship experience this semester was interesting. I interned at ESH/MESH with Bridgeway. My Supervisor was Emilie Banz. I didn’t do much but I did learn a lot from this experience. It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. I am learning some important skills and finding out some things about myself and the tough skin I will need in order to stay in the area of juvenile support.

Goals - My goals for my internship at the Rockford Center include: becoming more familiar with Social Workers in Rockford and also in other settings, learning how to interview patients on my own with confidence, learning how to execute the discharge process of patients independently without having to ask my supervisor for assistance, becoming more familiar with adolescents and being mindful of their feelings, being more patient with myself, learning how to create boundaries with patients and lastly being more assertive in the workplace. Since I am a visual learner, I believe that I can meet these goals by watching my supervisor when she interviews patients, when she takes notes during the interviews, as well as when she fills out the appropriate paperwork for each case. I also learn by simply doing tasks on my own as well. Thus, it is very useful for me when my supervisor tells me what she needs done and challenges me to remember the appropriate protocol for each task.
Steve prefers to work with middle aged children, for younger children make him uncomfortable and older children are too political. Prior to the case study he had low expectations for the children, for he believed the parents are not educating their children enough. As a result, during the first school trip he ignored the new format and preceded giving the group a traditional tour of the museum. During the second school trip Steve was an “roaming expert (Allen and Crowley 94)”, so he would walk through the exhibits, as a source of guidance, but also as an observer. Therefore, during the second visit Steve had the opportunity to realize how educated and excited the children were about the museum and its exhibit, for the children had learned about this topic prior to entering the museum. At my internship at the Historical Society, I got to observe a second grade walking tour and I remember being mesmerized about how educated the children were about Frederick’s history, but also how the students were applying the information they obtained in class into the tour. Both Steve and I learned that in-classroom preparation prior to visiting a museum can truly make an education program more rewarding for the students and the museum
In the entire six months of my internship the more work I did, the more experience I gained. It is the only way out to get better. I was there to learn so I made most of my time there.
