Introduction
Microsoft has historically been best known for its Windows operating systems and suite of Office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Conversely, Google is best known for its internet search engine. As both companies strive for more market share and computer dominance, they are taking the approach of entering adjacent markets to their core competencies.
Microsoft, abandoning the Live search engine that has taken a beating from Google over the last decade, has launched a new, feature rich search engine called Bing. They are trying to differentiate themselves from the Google search engine by parting from Google’s clean, minimalist look and adding more content to the search page, hopefully reducing the number of clicks for its customers.
Google on the other hand has been relentlessly attacking Microsoft on all fronts, with search, web based e-mail, office, and even an operating system. Arguably one of Google’s most successful endeavors is the cloud based Gmail e-mail service. Gmail has been vastly superior to Microsoft’s Hotmail e-mail service, offering many more features, and, originally more storage space to gain market share. The web based service also competes with Microsoft’s desktop client e-mail service, Outlook, leveraging the ease of accessing online e-mail.
Gmail has changed the way many people use e-mail, by labeling, archiving the messages instead of putting them in folders, and finally offering advance filtering and spam blocking technology. The advantage of the Gmail system is that one message can have many tags attached, versus the old system which required the e-mail to be stored in only one folder. Below are some of the areas where Microsoft and Google are competing for market ...

Since its creation, the Internet has continuously grown in importance as a means to obtain information. This is due in part because it is not censored like the rest of America’s mainstream media, such as television, newspapers, and the radio. Nevertheless, the issue of censorship has raised many controversial issues, not only in the United States, but also throughout the world. In the debate by Intelligence2 (2008): Google Violates its Don’t be Evil Motto, it is argued that Google has violated its self declared motto that it wouldn’t be evil, thus putting people’s interest before their own corporate financial interests. While Google has committed certain questionable acts I do not believe they have violated their motto. Harry Lewis, Randal Picker, and Siva Vaidhyanathan argue that this violation is exposed in Goggle’s agreement to cooperate with the Chinese government in exchange of a larger monetary market and in its advertisement market (Intelligence2, 2008). Nevertheless, Esther Dyson, Jim Harper, and Jeff Jarvis argue that while such actions have occurred, the good it has brought to the over all population exemplifies their don’t be evil motto.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG, NASDAQ: GOOGL), is an international information technology pioneer that specializes in what way individuals access and interrelate with information over a wide variety of platforms. Google has changed a lot since it first started. In 1996 Google's creators, Larry Page and Sergey Brin made BackRub, the first version of Google. It was online for a year before they renamed it Google. The company continued to change after that by releasing Google Toolbar and Google AdWords in 2000, and in 2001 Google Groups. In 2001 the image search was released, and in 2002 Google News. In 2003 Google bought Pyra, the creators of Blogger, and released Google Book Search. Then, in 2005 Google Maps, Google Earth, Gmail and Google Talk were released. In 2006 Google acquired YouTube and SketchUp, and released Picasa, Google Docs, Google Financial, Google Calendar, and Google Trends. In 2007 the sky was featured in Google Earth, and Street View was introduced for a few cities in the U .S. Google Chrome was released in 2008 and 10 more languages were added to Google Translate, making the total of supported languages 23. The ocean began being shown in Google Earth in 2009, and the Nexus One smartphone was also released. Today, Google has many more projects than those listed and seems to want to expand into almost anything it can get its hands into.

There have been many arguments and issues that have been raised with the controversy over Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Justice’s claim against Microsoft and its founder Bill Gates of monopolistic practices in bundling its internet browser “Internet Explorer” into its popular Windows computer operating system. By doing this, Microsoft would effectively crush its competitors (it’s main rival being Netscape Navigator), and acquire a monopoly over the software that people use to access the Internet.
In helping avert the threat in the area of development of web services (such as .NET), Microsoft has offered to support partners and developers of programs to the tune of $2 billion. This may provide some incentive to programmers; however, the results remain to be seen. In the search business for Microsoft MSN to compete with Google and Yahoo, Microsoft spent approximately $200 million in advertising. In addition to pure Internet searching, Microsoft is developing the search functionality to take place across the Windows platform.

The report will also draw a conclusion from the findings and will determine if additional regulations are needed or if the regulations currently in place are sufficient.
The public’s perception of these two products is very different. Most people see Google as ‘the’ search engine; people have grown up with it and its most people’s first stop when searching for something on the internet, in fact when people are unsure of something they’ll often use the expression “I’ll Google it”, this sums up how important Google is in everyday life. There is however a small problem that accompanies brands that get as big as Google and that is a fear of a monopoly and how much power a company has over the economy/ the entire world.

Apple is the company that creates high end, easy to learn products. They make you pay a premium for their products ($2,000 for a MacBook Pro, everyone!). Apple is one of the few companies that doesn't have to do anything to be cool, they just are cool. Lots of people think of Apple as the cool one, while Google is considered your best friend for homework. What about Microsoft?
Search engines have many capabilities from using key words or phrases to find what you are looking for to using general statements to browse the web. But what exactly is a search engine? Search engines are huge databases of web page files that have been assembled automatically by machine. There are two types of search engines. One type is the individual search engine. This type of search engine compiles its information on to its own database making it accessible when you use that particular engine. It does not use any other engine?s information to help with your search. Then there are the meta-searchers which do not have their own databases. They use a combination of individual search engine?s information simultaneously, from a single site and using the same interface. Meta-searchers provide a quick way of finding out which engines are retrieving the best results for you in your search. There are two ways that Meta-searchers show their results. Most use a single list which display multiple-engine search results in a single merged list and had removed all the duplicate entries from the list. The second way that they display their results is through multiple lists. These are separate lists in which are displayed as they are received from each engine leaving the duplicate entries on the list.
