Internet Overuse: Inappropriate Social Media Interaction

The Internet is an exceptional place. Anyone can be a part of the wonders of the cyber world. By simply logging onto a network-connected computer, one can express his/her own cyber voice. From Facebook to memes to Hulu, the net has endless opportunities for entertainment, social interaction and information. But what effect does the Internet have on today’s children? A child growing up is a natural, beautiful part of life. Many aspects of the Internet can inhibit this subtle stage of life, such as social media or internet addiction. Although the Internet offers beneficial effects, the way in which today’s children use it has a negative impact on their physical and mental development.
Using the Internet for extended periods of time means less physical exercise for the user because the time normally spent for exercise is spent surfing the net. Additionally, too much internet use affects a child's social communication skills because less time is spent face-to-face with people (ottom7). A child would take a risk of being threatened by a sex offender if he/she were to put personal information on the Internet. Another negative impact that overuse of the Internet causes in children is damage to long-term memory as an effect of the availability of a vast amount of information (Carr). Having any fact or other piece of information can lead to an overload of the brain. Also, the convenience of the Internet’s available information can cause children to become too dependent on that sort of handiness, losing the ability Approximately two-thirds of eight year old children in the United States go online each day (Patrick, 2014). Eight year old children should be playing outside or, well, being a kid, not wasting time on the Internet!
