Why do people get addicted to games online and how can we help them to control their time on internet? Is internet addiction a big problem in the world? Some people suggest that computers and games online are not so bad if they are not used out of balance (2008 ). However, some people say internet addiction is a problem of the public health (2008 ). Addiction is an illness which makes addicted people unable to control the amount of time they spend on playing game s. This is a big problem of every country in the world. It affects addicted people on various aspects such as reduced health, lost responsibilities and violence. However, we have some solutions to help the addicts such as hospitals, personal time managements and exposing to other interest s. (The most effective treatment in my opinion is personal time manage). Internet addiction is very common in countries which have developed technologies. Today, about 76% of the US population has been using the Internet for shopping, entertainments or political information. According to the Entertainment Software Association, in 2008, game software sold 28% more than in 2007 (Wagner, J. S., 2008). About 1,178 American aged from 8 to 18 play games and one in 10 players has some signs of addictive behaviors (8, 5 % of American youth). People are addicted to video game because they like to punish or surpass other players in their games to show that they are the best. This can make them feel good about themselves. Wagner said “Studies show that 92 percent of children under age 18 play regularly” (2008). The addict spent a lot of time for their game. That’s why they will lose sleep, neglect to shower, and skip meals to focus on their game. Finally, they will reduce their heath in the near fu...

...erstand about gaming addiction before trying to help addicts to quit their game . It affects addicts in many ways such as reduce health, lost responsibilities and violence . However, we have some ways to help them quit playing game such as hospital, personal time managements and open mind with other interest s. I prefer that the best solution is “personal time manage”. This is because if the addicts can understand that they spend too much time on games, they already have a 50% chance of quitting the games. Also, people around the addicts can’t do anything if they don’t want to quit or control their time. That’s why personal time management is the important thing . Finally, will internet addiction stop? I think it is not going to happen. Gaming addiction will improve more than per day because we can’t control the addict. The more internet development the more addict
According to Aviv Weinstein (2010), from the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, “Computer game addiction is excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that may interfere with daily life” (p. 1). A survey done to measure the negative relationship between video games and addiction involved kids from the age of 13 to 17 (Brunborg, G. S., Mentzoni, R. A., & Frøyland, L. R., 2014). To no surprise, there was a relationship between depression, low academic achievement, conduct problems
In his article “internet addiction”, published in 2010 by Reason Magazine, Greg Beato tries to show how internet addiction, an excessive behavior brought up by the psychiatrist Ivan Gilbert, is an important issue for the society and why it should be considered as a behavior disorder. He supports his thesis by using a lot of evidence such as graphics, statistics, and researches. Although, Beato’s arguments about the causes of internet addiction and the reasons why it should add to the DSM are mostly true, some of his observations on the future are pessimistic.
For example, there are many symptoms to being addicted to video games. Preoccupation, downplaying computer use, lack of control, loss of time, negative impact on other areas of life, hiding from negative or uncomfortable feelings or situations, defensiveness, misuse of money, and mixed feelings are some of the symptoms of addiction ("Video Game Addiction"). Children are more liable to become addicted to video games played online with other people than regular games. Many children who are suffering from addiction are more likely not to have that many friends because they rely on online interaction to make virtual friends ("Video Game Addiction).
Before we can begin to understand how video games affect student success, there must first be an understanding in what constitutes as problem gaming, or an addiction to video games. According to the article ‘Recognizing problem video game use’ the authors point out that these games often provide an alternative or way to escape everyday life and for some people being able to disappear into an alternate reality is worth the consequences associated with avoiding real-life socialization and responsibilities (Porter, Starcevic, Berle, & French, 2010) . According to their study, the criteria for problem use are characteristics such as having a strong need to play, playing when one knows they shouldn’t, playing for extended hours, interference with social activities and responsibilities, lack of sleep, physical pains as well as in increased consumption of caffeine most often endorsed by 70% of participant’s who reported problem game use (Porter, Starcevic, Berle, & French, 2010). Many mental health professionals have responded by suggesting that video game/internet addiction should be formally ...
Experts Han and Renshaw have studies that proves patients with internet addiction have altered social behavior, increased aggression, tend to be lonely, reduced attention, and depressed moods. Their studies also show disruption of daily routines and may become violent when asked to stop playing. Daily time spent playing video games in children takes away from reading and academic study. Bavelier and Green’s idea was for game developers to turn their games for educational and/or clinical applications. This is to develop a fun and attractive games that can also have the educational or rehabilitation impact experts are seeking (Bavelier et al.,
In Greg Beato’s article “Internet Addiction” originally published in august, september 2010 in to Reason magazine he argues that internet addiction is a problem in our society today. Internet addiction should be reported in the Diagnostic and statistic manual of mental disorder (DSM). It is a huge problem, he also says that internet is like narcotic drugs and very addicting. He states that if ones use Google for few minutes only it leads us to spend more than a few minutes on the internet and it turns in to spending hours. Beato refers that University of Maryland did a group study for 24 hour and all the students went crazy without their phones and iPods, one girl admitted that she is an addict. The students were anxious and miserable. He also says that one kid killed his parents because they took away his Xbox. Internet also leads to death of people, therefore it is a problem and we should put it on to the DSM.
Problematic gaming has also been associated with increased aggression, low sociability, and low satisfaction. One study found decreased activity in reward processing centres of the brain in those frequently playing World of Warcraft, which is a similar deficiency found in substance abuse” (Swiftwater np). Some researchers say that teens are not addicted to online games: “But what about teens who seem to spend most of their leisure time on games? Heavy gamers — more than an hour a day — actually spend more time reading for pleasure (55 minutes daily) than teens who play no video games at all (41 minutes), according to the Kaiser survey. And Kaiser found only 13 percent of adolescents were heavy gamers” (Glazer 940). The teenagers that are considered the heaviest gamers are the teens that are reading the most. Even though some researchers have said that MMORPGs are harmful and addictive, MMORPGs are helpful with mental health, students learning in school, and skills the users learn that are applied to their
People who are addictive tend to obsessively go on online and follow up one of their role models or to play videos to create different characters in the virtual world. One of the mains reasons of why people become addicted to the internet is so they can escape their realities. People, who usually had unfortunate childhoods, try their best to find a way to become distracted with their own life. If they are not happy with themselves, they play videos games to create characters online or they obsessively update themselves on others that they wish they could be. Another reason why people become obsessive because it is a way for them to meet others online that share the same interest. From personal experience, my father used to have an obsession playing “World of Warcraft.” If he had the choice to, he would not leave the house and would play until he had to go to sleep, rinse and repeat. In a military family, it was common for us to constantly move around and for my father it was difficult in finding friends. My father would mostly play the game to find others that had the same interests that would keep him company. If my father didn 't realize how badly the game had corrupted his lifestyle, the addiction may have became more
Video games are often portrayed in a negative manner because they are seen as having an "addictive" quality. Addiction has been defined as "A primary, chronic disease, characterized by impaired control over the use of a psychoactive substance and/or behavior. Despite the wonderful benefits games offer as diversions, spending too much time, to the neglect of normal life duties, and social development with direct contact with others can and often does happen. Clinically, the manifestations occur along biological, sociological, spiritual and especially psychological. Some psychological effects that affect the behaviors are failure to play outdoor games, difficulties in work or school, telling lies to everyone, decreased attention to personal hygiene, decreased attention to family and friends, and disturbances in the sleep cycle. Many video game addicts have strug...
Game addicts cannot go on about that day without playing a game. They will spend at an average of twenty-four hours a week on gaming alone. Many game addicts forget about the everyday basic necessity such as eating, bathing and sleeping and continue on their games. Seungseob lee, a gamer addict who did not take care of himself, “played Starcraft for more than fifty consecutive hours at an internet cafe before suffering a fatal heart attack” (DAnastasio). The game addiction’s danger to health is tremendous mostly among adults and teenagers that are not under adult supervision. A solution to the game addiction problem would be simply prevent the person from accessing the game, but that also causes major problems. Brett, a gamer addict, thought of suicide when he wasn’t allowed to play his video game. He states, “At the time [I] felt anything had to be better than not being allowed to play Counter Strike” (DAnastasio). Brett ended up getting depression and started failing his classes. Brett cut himself away from the world and won’t even come out of the room. Excessive gaming can also “. . . induce pseudo hallucinatory-like experiences” (Clark). It happens when the gamer gets off the game after a long hours of playing. The gamer feels as if he or she is still in the game. One game addict claims to see and hear the zombies out the window of his home. These hallucinations can cause serious psychological and
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.

When I was a child, my parents allowed me to play computer games. I find that permission eventually made me ruin my study and life at school. I could still recall my first-time play at my 15. I was extremely curious and excited at that moment. At the same time, I started to be addicted to playing computer games. I totally lost control of my life by playing computers games like alcohol or drug addicts. To many people, addiction is a dependency on a substance, activity or behaviour which affects physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing. In my case, my addiction in computer games has created negative impacts on my life.
There are many causes for people are addicting on the computer. First of all, students have free access to the Internet and easily available at most schools’ computer lab. Because it is free and most school provide an e-mail account and have no limit the amount of time for student to log on. Second, anyone who addicts to Internet has a bigger problem with social life; especially, people who are easily bored, lonely, shy, relationship problem, lake of self-confidence and low self-esteem. They may rely on the computer screen to solve personal problems or meet their needs for companionship. However to ignore what cause people to addict on the computers, the endless new connections are that draws addicts to all of us.
