Today’s generation of children and young adults grew up with technology access easily available to them. They carry cell phones that allow instant communication with their friends and instant access to the internet. Research to them means, pulling up an internet browser, typing in a subject and being presented with thousands of choices from which they can choose. Traditional teacher led instruction does not promote the interactive type of learning that technology has allowed students to use. Today’s teacher must learn to include a more interactive style of teaching that the technologically savvy student is wired to understand and enjoy. Interactive based learning engages student’s interests, improves student comprehension, and increases student achievement. Using the range of techniques offered by interactive based learning, it will drastically change the overall student performance.
Active involvement in class discussions and incorporating technology are techniques that could be used when trying to engage student’s interests. Interactive based learning provides an opportunity to become actively involved in the discussion instead of just listening to an instructor throw huge amounts of information their way. Using technology is a way for students to become active in their learning. Tools such as interactive white boards enable children to engage in classroom games, view websites, and review problems step by step. Technology can enhance class communications by offering many different ways to reach parents and students. The use of different technologies can help teachers to answer student questions as well as continue a class discussion outside of class. This is helpful for both the student and teacher because it allows the teacher to see which students are comprehending the material they are learning.
“With some research, creativity, and professional development, any school can stop talking about becoming a 21st Century school and confidently become a 21st Century School (Byrne, 2009).” Technology is becoming more and more embedded into classroom instruction. Some of these technologies include using Web 2.0 application, project-based learning (PBL), and using classroom response systems, otherwise known as clickers, in the classroom. These technologies offer some of the latest and best practices in using technology effectively to engage students’ within learning environments.
In recent years, there has been a huge push towards a new form of learning in all schools, from primary schools to colleges. Interactive learning or E- Learning is a more social method of relaying information in a classroom environment. Passive learning or book learning depends on students paying attention to a teacher or lecturer and being able to memorise information and recall it when needed. To maximize student’s participation, modified suggestopedia made use of multi-media in the teaching-learning process especially in creating a sensory rich and relaxing classroom atmosphere. Schunk (2012) mentioned that the use of video clips, projectors or even social media in the teaching- learning process helps achieve students’ maximum participation. In connection to this, Sivakumaran (2012) found out that students perceived that incorporating technology on a higher level in their classrooms would make them more engaged and excited to learn.
Within technology comes the gateway to almost everything that is out in the internet, it opens a whole new world to the students and the teachers that use them. The outcome of the uses, if they happen to be good or bad, come from the restrictions and the management of usage of said technology inside a classroom. Educators see firsthand how the used in their daily lives influence how a student learns. Thanks to technology not only has students and teachers changed the ways they learn and teach, learning itself has changed as well. It is not only crucial to have the technological tools needed in a classroom, but also an educator that can mend and mold the technology to their rightful use. The use of technology in a classroom not only expands the tools and gadgets, not to mention adds much needed knowledge that will help students later on in life, but also brings a whole new and better way to teach and learn.
In preparing 21st-century students for life beyond the classroom, educators must reevaluate what and how they teach and tailor this to the individual needs of the student. Educators must bring technology into learning to engage, motivate, and inspire their students become achievers (Spires, Lee, Turner, & Johnson, 2008). Imagine a year nine geography class; a research question has been posed to them. Traditional classroom methods dictate that the students would be given either a textbook in which they will be able to find the answer, or the teacher adopts a more lecture style of learning. But, if the digital technologies have been implemented in the classroom then the students will be able to access a wide variety of different mediums to find the answer, using global content to ascertain an answer. The range of information and the interactiveness of sleuthing for the answer is a fun and interactive experience, in comparison to passively listening to the teacher. Traditional teaching methods should not be dismissed, but the inclusion of digital technologies into the classrooms adds additional layers to the learning experience. Technology may enhance the students learning and may assist most students in achieving their academic standards. When technology and appropriate teaching methods are combined, technology may increase the academic achievement. Positive effects have been found in all major subject areas, from preschool to higher education, both regular and special needs students. Educational technology has been found to have a positive effect on a student’s attitude toward learning and on self-concepts. The introduction of technology into the learning environment has allowed the learning to be more student-centered, to encourage group learning, and helps to stimulate an increase in the student-teacher interaction. Students nowadays, are so focus on technology and how they can put their hands in technology. As a future teacher I believe that, the best way to capture my student’s attention is by providing them with tools that can motivate them to learn. With the use of technology, I may approach teaching differently by encouraging my students to use on-line resources. Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
The introduction of technology into education has revolutionized the teaching quality and learning outcome in the last ten years. The integration of technology into lectures by teachers in classroom has become so natural that both teachers and learners consider computers and their related applications for instruction are “a routine component of the classroom and educational processes in general” (Nuldén, 1999 cited in Buzzard et al., 2011, pp.131-139).
