1. Introduction
The United States of America are a classical example of a political two-party system . (cp. McDonald/Samples, 2006: 18). The Republican party and the Democrat party ...
However, at the beginning of 2009, a new influential non-party player appeared in the political arena. The Tea Party Movement succeeded to considerably influence the 2010 elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate in the United States. Their main positions which can be found in their “Contract from America” (Tea Party Movement, 2010) played a major role in the election campaigns of both the Republican and the Democratic Party (...). The Tea Party advocates for a better control of the constitutional competences of Congress, for fewer environmental regulations that may have negative impact on the economy, for a balanced bugdet, for a single-rate tax system reform, for a smaller and more efficient administration as well as federal-level, state-level and local-level subsidiarity, for a reduction of federal government spending growth, for a more market-based health care system, for a reduction of the dependence on foreign energy sources, for more restrictive rules for the use of earmarks and for a repeal of all currently scheduled tax increases (ibid.). Their positions can be summed up as a strong stance against 'big government', especially Federal government.
Building on a spatial rational choice framework of party competition developed by Anthony Downs, I seek to analyze in this paper what the reasons are that enable the the Tea Party Movement to force the established parties, foremost the Republican party, to adopt many of their positions in their election campaigns. In line with this, the central research question of this paper i...

...pates that the Tea Party Movement might become an actual party directly participating in the U.S. party competition by running Candidates in all kinds of elections - state, federal or even Presidential. The “Grand Old Party” shifts its position on 'big government' close to the Tea Party's positions to take away their incentives to run their own candidates since their interest then will be already advocated by the Republicans. While doing this, the G.O.P accepts that this behavior could actually weaken their own position in elections since the Democrats could also try to shift their positions further right, absorbing some of the traditional Republican voters. But for the Republican party, this option is the lesser of two evils: as our analysis has shown, the creation of an actual Tea-Party party could substantially endanger the Republican party's political survival.
The first political parties in America began to form at the end of the 18th century. "The conflict that took shape in the 1790s between the Federalists and the Antifederalists exercised a profound impact on American history." The two primary influences, Thomas Jefferson a...

When America was founded in 1776, political factions were far less distinctively partisan than they are today. They more closely represented conservative and liberal sides of the political spectrum. Men ran for political office, holding their beliefs as their flag, not the party they belonged to. Unfortunately, this method did not last long. By the late 1820s, a strong party system had developed. However, there was still one group opposed to the party system, the Whig Party. Its history shaped the ideals it valued. Regrettably, the Whig Party’s short lifespan affected the national political conversation forever. The Whig Party’s interesting history and tragic demise are important to understanding the political system of the United States.
A two-party system is a political system in which only two parties have a realistic opportunity to compete effectively for control. As a result, all, or nearly all, elected officials end up being a member in one of the two major parties. In a two-party system, one of the parties usually holds a majority in the legislature hence, being referred to as the majority party while the other party is the minority party. The United States of America is considered to be a two-party system. A two-party system emerged early in the history of the new Republic. Beginning with the Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans in the late 1780s, two major parties have dominated national politics, although which particular two parties has changed with the times and issues. During the nineteenth century, the Democrats and Republicans emerged as the two dominant parties in American politics. As the American party system evolved, many third parties emerged, but few of them remained in existence for very long. Today the Democrats and Republican still remain as the dominant parties. These two parties hav...
Much of society is categorized into groups, subcultures and/or subspecies; Politics is much the same. While many different political parties have arose throughout history and had their major moments, two common parties stand out today in the United States political system. America’s government is comprised of ideals and paradigms that date back to the Roman Empire and Ancient Greece. The leading political parties, the Democrats and Republicans, are two separate yet similar entities that run the country’s government from the inside and out. The actions each politician takes effects the very world we live in. These parties share many similarities, many differences, and because of this a polarization of parties has dominated the day to day activities of Capitol Hill and the White House.
The United States has two major parties, The Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Republicans accept that all persons are pledged for his or her own position in the commonwealth. Government should empower all human beings the strength to protect ...
During the fourth crisis, we held very strong beliefs as Western Homesteaders. Because we have little wealth to our names, we felt strongly that the average American consumer should be guaranteed protection against abominations such as monopolies and trusts, that raise prices and force small businesses to close up shop. Furthermore, we were invigorated by the creation of the Populist Party, which we though perfectly matched our beliefs and aligned with the goals we set for the United States of America. Thus, during the fourth crisis, we voted for leaders that supported the Sherman Antitrust Act in addition to supporting the Populist Party.
Summary: In Chapter 4, Hudson addresses, one of the greatest worries in the present day American vote based system is the absence of political hobby and support that has expanded following the 1960s. Most political researchers concur with the thought that a sound majority rule government needs a solid measure of support and political adequacy; be that as it may, the huge verbal confrontation includes realizing what is the sum important to be viewed as "solid"? Some political researchers trust the hypothesis, in which normal American's absence of interest is in compelling damage
During the late 19th and early 20th century both the Populist Party and Progressive movement wanted to preserve some things, while also addressing the need for reform. Although many of the ideas and goals of these “Third parties” were initially not legislated and considered far-fetched, many of these ideas later became fundamental laws throughout American history.
Participants in the movement tended toward ideological rigidity and absolutist demands, bringing to the fore far-right ideas that had long been resisted by principled conservatives.” (Kabaservice) Although everyone deserves the ability to support whatever cause they wish, members of this Tea Party Movement, and other extremists groups and voters are hurting both parties. The amount of extremists may be small in comparison to the rest of the party, but they are successful enough to keep their place. This is a terrible thing for the parties, because they discourage young Democrats and Republicans are now arch enemies, and for no reason at all.
In the article, “Political Stability of Two-Party and Multi-party Systems,” by Midlarsky, the author contrasts the differences in the stability between governments that use a two-party system versus governments that use a multi-party system. The author focuses first on how the American two-party system of government, with its ups and downs, has remained strong through wars and depressions. The reason that America is so stable though is because the parties control the entirety of the government leaving little room for change from the normal standards. When dealing with one-party systems there is the same concept, a large amount of power to one group provides no disruption in the government. In multi-party systems some have a relatively stable government, but most cannot compare to the longevity of the American bureaucracy and other two-party systems (Midlarsky). So although multi-party systems are considered to have more voting freedom, because they have a larger selection of candidates, the solidity of these systems is their major downfall. A nation’s priority is in keeping their government up and running, but the costs of only having one or two parties entails a restriction on voting
The two dominating political parties in the United States, Democratic and Republican, create a division
Just as Andrew Jackson had envisioned during the formation of the Democratic Party in the 1820's all organized political parties depend on the common working man to form their base. No matter how strong any party may appear at first glance its strength comes from the grass roots members in small communities throughout the country and goes upward and not from the top down. Many political leaders and organizers in the national political arena of today have forgotten this important fact.
Although the political parties of today are different in many ways, the assertion that “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two parties” is not entirely off base. The parties may seem to be different enough at first glance: they have different issues they focus on and different opinions on those issues, but the end result is too often the same: both parties receive massive amounts of money from corporate special interests – special interests that want and most often get a say in how the government is run and what policies will be enacted. Although the advertised ideologies of the two parties may be different, the strategies and policies of both parties are
George R. T. Hewes was a British shoemaker who lived in the Boston area during the 18th century. He wrote in a memoir the details of punishment during this time as well as the events leading up to, and during the actual event known as the Boston tea party. After discussing the way that the event went down he then goes on to talk about the people inside of the town that still sold tea products and the things that the colonists would do to them. I believe that his memoir is very important to history. It gives an inside perspective to what is going on within the town of Boston days before the uprising unfolds. The details that George R. T. Hewes shares are first person and allow the reader to get involved in what is happening and how it is progressing.
