“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” (Gone with the Wind Movie). “…Life’s a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get” (Forrest Gump Movie). “You’re killin’ me smalls” (The Sandlot Movie). These are some movie quotes from some fairly well known films. They have meaning because one is unique, another is clever, and the other one is amusing. If it’s an influential quote, audiences will remember it because it affected them in either a positive or negative way. Movies have been around since the early 20’s and have become a big part of modern society. Everyone can relate to at least one movie, because of how diverse they are. Since everyone can relate to a movie, it’s safe to say that movies can be pretty influential. Some areas where films have made an influence are storytelling, entertainment, and culture.
Movies are a great version of storytelling because they make stories more relatable and memorable. Storytelling is one of the most powerful capabilities humans possess. It can be used to motivate, dominate, and influence people. The scope and power of storytelling has grown immensely from its roots in stories told over the campfire. It now covers every dimension of human emotion and endeavor. This makes stories incredibly relatable and influential in that one can relate to the emotions that are being depicted and can, if wanted to, be influenced by the decision the character made. Before movies were invented, people relied on speaking and “the written word” to hear stories. Each person visualized the story’s characters, sets, and actions differently. There are a lot of things that can influence people. It can be something someone said, a motivational poster, or a form of entertainment. No matter what it is, the ability to influence is incredibly powerful. It can come to define whoever’s being influenced. Movies are a huge source of influence because they’re also a form of entertainment. Movies can influence us because they have influenced storytelling, entertainment, and culture.
