Personal rights, the freedom of thought and belief, and a population’s standard of living are important factors of a nation’s well-being. The society’s opinions, in many democratic countries, play an important role in political decision-making. However, several of those freedoms, as well as democratic government practices slow down the speed at which laws and policies come into place. In times of crisis, this many not be the best for the nation’s security. Governments should allow personal rights, along with the right to say and think what people believe, but should suspend them during times of crisis to allow affairs to be kept under control, and important political decisions to become effective immediately.
In a dictatorship, we can see that all the power is limited to the ruling elite or the dictator. When a crisis such as war or depression strikes upon a nation, the dictator takes action towards helping the country become stable again. In 1933, Adolf Hitler passed the Enabling Act which allowed him to rule by decree, and he was now a dictator. He promised the German people that he will pull the country out of depression, regain lost territories and peoples, and build up their military. Dictatorial power allowed him to do all of those things.
This type of dictatorial power should only be kept in place while the country is in struggle. Once the government’s goals have been reached, democracy should slowly be restored. If democracy does not eventually become restored, usually most fascist leaders will take the concept of fascism too far and will result in failure. In order for a nation to become successful and satisfy its government and people, a democracy is the best choice. It allows freedom of thought and belief, personal rights, raises their standard of living, and allows their concerns and opinions to affect political decisions. However, in times of crisis, the government’s decisions and actions must be quick, and should assume what would be the best in the people, in order to do what is best for the entire nation. This mean temporarily suspending people’s rights and freedoms and controlling their thoughts in order to keep the nation secure.
Before that can be established, I think a definition of democracy should be stated so that it may be called upon later in this essay. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, democracy is stated as "the principle of social equality and respect for the individual within a community" .
Fascism is one of the great political ideology in the 20th century. It is a kind of authoritarian government that, according to Wikipedia, “considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole.” Two of the most successful and to be in the vanguard of fascism government is Italian fascism – led by Benito Mussolini, and Nazi Germany – led by Adolf Hitler. Fascism in Italy and Germany, though in many regards very similar - have the same political ideologies, still have many aspects to them that make them different from each other.
Democracy is rule by the people; the people elect governing officials based off of their personal values and beliefs. Different political parties rule the political scene and are serving to represent the people’s opinions in the best ways possible. Previously, I had a belief that my political view was essentially the only one possible and therefore it was the best. These views changed quickly once I learned the different political parties, their views, how they represent the people’s views, and how public opinion shapes politics. The government is formed around differentiating opinions on which policies should be in place and which social aspects need to be considered first. People were losing faith in their democracies and in capitalism. Leaders who gained power supported powerful militarism, nationalism, and initiated the return of an authoritarian rule. J.R. Oppenheimer says that the rise of fascism and totalitarianism in Europe and Russia instigated a “critical step on the path to war.” In 1922, Benito Mussolini held leadership in Italy, promising a proficient and militaristic nationalistic state. During his control as prime minister, he gained a large group of followers, banned the disparagement of government, and used extreme violence against his enemies within the parliament.
One of the longest lasting debates in the United States is the struggle to balance freedom and safety. Throughout history there have been instances were freedoms have been suspended- whether for the better or worse- because the United States was in a time of crisis. The Quasi War against the French, the Civil War, and the First World War were events where presidents found themselves under fire because of their controversial suspension of certain constitutional rights. Should certain freedoms be curtailed in times of crisis? This debate has always been so controversial because there has never been a majority one way or another. It has gone beyond all previous governing systems and has made room for progress and development. By offering free and fair elections, democracy has redefined human dignity and patriotism.
