The sun shines upon Earth every day, yet no one thinks much of it. Solar power’s importance, though, is above what anyone could have ever imagined. There is active solar energy, which is when solar power is converted into light, heat, cause air-movement for ventilation or cooling, or store heat for future use. Less thought of, the other type of solar energy is passive energy, which most take for granted. Solar power provides life with heat, light, and now, electricity. Solar power also plays a role in 4 of the 5 areas of green technology: energy, green building, environmentally preferred purchasing, and green chemistry. All in all, solar power is quite a unique form of energy.
The most simplest type of solar energy is passive energy. It is when solar energy is used directly in the forms of heat or light. This energy can be collected as easily as changing the way a structure is oriented, designed, or constructed. Windows can allow the sun to heat and illuminate the room to replace electricity during the day. Heat-absorbing surfaces like dark walls can help collect heat to warm the home, while air vents are used spread the warm air around the house (Gale). All in all, passive energy is one of the two types of solar energy.
Active energy is when solar power is turned into electricity using a technology called Solar Photovoltaic (PV) or into heat by Solar Thermal. Unlike passive solar energy, this type of energy is not directly changed into the forms. Semiconductors are used in Solar Photovoltaic. They create electricity when hit by sunlight. They are flat-plates that have insulated glass-covered box painted black to maximize the collection of heat. Between the collectors water circulates in loops, where the water is heated, and the...

All in all, solar energy is quite important to life on Earth. Without passive solar energy, what humans call life would not have existed. Active energy can be beneficial to the health of planet Earth. It can be used to replace fossil fuels because they will run out as the demands for it are constantly increasing. Solar energy is extremely environmentally friendly in comparison to other forms of energy. It is also a type of energy that humans have a lot of, the amount is almost endless. People who live far and isolated from electricity power plants can just use the solar panels that are installed on their roof for energy. Changing to solar energy will also help life on Earth greatly in the long run and will help slow disasters such as global warming. Solar energy is more significant than anyone could have imagined.
Solar energy is energy taken from the light that reaches earth's surface from the sun. There are four different kinds of solar energy, which are active solar systems, passive solar systems, photovoltaic cells and concentrating power systems. An active solar systems is a system that captures solar energy by mechanical means. Common active solar systems are often in buildings or homes. Some examples are roof collectors and water heating. Low Intensity and high variability have limited the use of active solar energy in Canada. A pass...
A Passive solar system collects heat as the sun shines through the windows and is stored on thermal mass. It uses the sun’s energy for heating or cooling buildings. Future homes should be constructed with this system because its advantages outweigh its drawbacks with low emissions of CO2 or other pollutant, consists of little maintenance, and has positive long term effects such as low electric bills.
The sun warms up the planet but people can also use that to warm up their own house. Not only does the sun help with heating but it can also help with other renewable energy sources. The sun is considered the most powerful energy source because it makes wind, is part of the water cycle by evaporating water, and it helps plants grow (West). Solar power uses the dark blue, tile looking machines known as photovoltaic devices that gather the energy and convert it into energy (Wieman). Since the sun does not always shine on the same spot, people need to choose the location of these devices wisely. When they have the device in the right position then they can start gathering power. Solar power collects solar energy from the sun, then “converts that into sugar and starches which then break down to create chemical energy” (Heinrichs, 12). This seems as a wonderful but not many people realize how...
All energy comes from the sun. It is the most abundant form of clean, renewable energy. 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously, which is more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy use (Pierce). It does not produce carbon dioxide emissions, it will not deplete, and it is free. The way solar energy works can be demonstrated when one walks outside. The sunlight hits an object, the skin, and the energy turns into heat, which is the warmth that is felt on the skin. The way to harness this energy is when the sunlight hits certain materials, the energy turns into an electrical current instead (Locke). Solar cells are a device that can convert sunlight into electricity. Solar cells have crystals, which are bonds between silicon atoms made of electrons shared between all atoms (Locke). The light gets absorbed and the...
What is solar energy? To fully comprehend this, background information must be presented. How did we get to the point we are at now? Most people look to the 1973 oil embargo, where Arab delegates announced they’d no longer be shipping petroleum oil to countries, such as the U.S., who had supported Israel in their conflict with Egypt. About the same time as this was announced, members of OPEC agreed to quadruple world oil prices. Focus then turned to solar energy. With barely any oil being imported, the Federal government started putting close to $400 million per year for research on solar energy. The facts were and still are ever-present: oil, coal, and nuclear energy are depletable, causing a massive amount of pollutive particles to go up into the air, which in turn causes a bounty of problems. On the other hand, solar energy is clean and renewable with no bad after effects. The actual definition of solar energy is “energy from the sun that’s converted into thermal or electric energy.” The terminology used when discussing solar energy may be complex and difficult to understand to the average Joe. This is because not much has been done to try and explain the uses or even the way this system operates to the public. The money allocated by the government has seemed to go towards research instead of encouraging and educating the people about the benefits of renewable energy. The breakdown shows us that ...
Passive solar design and architecture may seem like a distant dream in our fast paced modern world, but in reality it’s more of a modern revival of a style of energy efficient building that has been around for millennia. What once seemed to be common sense ideas for designing a house that could both keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter has somehow been forgotten since we started to overuse the planet’s resources on our own comforts. When heating a house took lots of effort it was the wise choice to design a building that could use the energy provided by the sun in the most advantageous ways. Unfortunately, in my opinion, since all we have to do now to heat our house is a turn a dial and pay the bills, many of the simplest ways to cut down on our rising energy consumption have been completely disregarded. Fossil fuels allowed people to provide artificial light and temperatures. This meant that houses could be built without paying attention to the natural world. However, as more and more people agree that fossil fuels will almost certainly run out sometime in the next century, there has been a growing revival in passive solar design. Here, I hope to show you some of the basic principles of passive solar design and how they helped people thousands of years ago in an effort to make people understand how these ancient techniques can be improved on today to help with our growing energy problem.
Solar Energy is an alternative electrical energy source. Its a renewable source, because of its abundant supply and limited environmental impact. Solar energy has the ability to power buildings, electronic devices, and spacecrafts through a specific process. The energy is harvested from the sun to made usable, thus it is a renewable form of energy. Solar energy is created by the use of solar panels, a collection of photovoltaic cells (solar cells, that mean light and electricity). The solar panels have a system in which, it collects the sun’s rays and converts it into energy (similar to the organic process of photosynthesis in plants), and sto...
Solar energy is the practice of converting direct sunlight into energy that can be used for many different purposes. Solar energy is clean, efficient and environmentally safe. There are many forms of renewable energy, but the most powerful is solar energy. Solar Panels can transform solar light into electricity. Solar energy is environmentally conscious, and can help rejuvenate and rebuild local economies in communities worldwide. A successful transition will lead to a cleaner environment, decreased dependence on major power conglomerates and more jobs for residents in any community.
If estimates are correct, available fossil fuel reserves will be expended in the early 22nd century; these fossil fuels are accountable for around 90% of the world's power supply. Without power the modern world would effectively shut down and tear itself apart overnight. There is only one truly long-term solution to avoid this inevitable situation - infinitely renewable energy. Renewable energies include such power sources as wind, hydroelectric, and the most promising option of solar energy. The topic of implementing solar energy as the country's primary energy contributor has been one of much controversy; however, making this transition could promise a world of incredibly cheap power for an eternity. The following information will detail major discussion points in solar power that have significant impact on not just the industry but the way that ordinary Americans live their lives. The material has been organized into the following headings: current and projected capabilities, environmental impacts, cost, and solar roadways.
... and monthly water filling. Solar energy is the cleanest and purest form of energy, allowing for cleaner air overall in our environment. There is great hope for a lot more solar panels to be installed worldwide. Solar is a viable alternative energy with solar panels becoming more affordable and more efficiently designed.
Another alternative energy source is solar energy. This is predicted to be the most promising source of energy for the future, but there are still a few things that need improving to make it work in the most efficient way. Solar energy is produced when photovoltaic cells in solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it to energy. The energy from the cells is converted to electricity in an inverter and can be used or stored for later use. Solar energy is both renewable and sustainable. It is also a clean and quiet way to produce energy. Solar energy is good for remote or rural areas where it may be difficult to get power lines. Although solar panels are expensive to install they are low maintenance after installation. However, there is a need for a large, open area for the solar panels. Solar panels can only absorb energy during the day and even though the energy can be stored for use at night, it can be expensive to store energy. Solar panels are also less effective in bad weather when there is less sunlight to be
Solar energy depends on the energy comes from solar radiation that utilized for produce electricity or heating. The electricity generates by either photovoltaic or heat engines. There are two types of solar technologies. The first is passive solar techniques which use phot...
Solar energy in simple is the energy provided by the sun known as solar radiation. This energy can be used to produce solar electricity or heating. This energy can be for domestic use or even commercial use. The solar technologies are classified into 2 types, the solar photovoltaic (PV) and the concentrated solar power (CSP). For solar photovoltaic technology, the conversion of solar energy to electrical energy directly requires solar photovoltaic cells. In brief, the sunlight strikes the PV cell, the semiconductor material of the cell will absorb part of the light, and it will energize the electrons in the material, allowing it to flow freely, creating electricity. It is known as the photovoltaic effect. The other way to produce electricity
Solar energy is one of the useful resources, which do not impact on the environment. Today, some consumers use fossil fuel, which is nonrenewable and cause pollution, rather than other sources. Fossil fuel can make the air unhealthy by releasing carbon dioxide; therefore, solar energy is great because it is renewable energy and it is replaced. Solar energy as the same other sources has many uses, some of them can be dangerous especially if consumers use it in a wrong way and some of them can be useful and helpful for the environment; therefore, there are environmental advantages of solar energy. Overall, solar energy is an alternative source and can be used in many ways: to protect the environment since it is non-polluting, can be used in remote areas, and can be used in many devices.
I am certain that all have heard of the terms green house gases, fossil fuels, and global warming. Have you ever questioned what will happen if nothing is done about the environmental problems facing the world today? What if I answer you that, we can merely use the power from the sun to power up our entire planet without the use of harmful energy sources, which affect our atmosphere? The power from the sun is what we call solar power. Solar power is the energy that comes from the sun as light and heat energy, and then it is later converted into electrical energy through solar panels (Nelson, 2008). This kind of power is completely free, right? Why should we put a lot of expense on other sources of energy, when there is a complete free and healthy power? It is evident that solar energy is a healthy source of energy, which will help stop global warming all together, but it is economically efficient to switch everything to solar energy. Solar energy is capable of becoming the world's future power supply because, it is renewable, eco-friendly, and extremely efficient when strategically placed.
