What is appropriate and effective feedback? How can teachers use effective feedback and formative assessment to make informed curricular decisions in the classroom? Think back to a time or situation when you received good feedback from a friend, employer, doctor, or teacher. What made it good? Good, quality feedback is encouraging, useful, and effective. Effective feedback can bring clarification to learning objectives for students and serve as a guide to their learning, therefore helping them to improve their learning outcomes. As an educator in a fourth-grade co-taught classroom setting, it is very important to provide appropriate feedback and consistently motivate students to take ownership of their education. According to the beliefs of John Hattie and Helen Timperley, “formative assessment with appropriate feedback is the most powerful moderator in the enhancement of achievement” (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). I think the most important factor that influences writing is the depth of feedback students receive. Teachers are consumed with tons of assignments to grade and at times students receive minimal to no feedback at all resulting in only a grade and no comments. The problem is, students are just getting writing practice, yet they’re making no improvements. The point of John Franklin Bobbitt, a leader in the social efficiency movement, is valuable because a primary goal of curriculum design was the elimination of waste (1912), and it was wasteful to teach people things they would never (Shepard, 2000, p. 4).
