In the society of media, in every image, photo, song, painting, sculpture, ect… there will always be a form of composition present. These compositional tools are added into media to add an overall aesthetic appeal to the artwork. In media in general, artists like their work of art to portray a certain feeling or representing a look. Artists use different techniques to make their artworks aesthetically appealing to the eye. These techniques are known as compositional tools, and those tools are one, two, and three point perspective, notan, Fibonacci sequence, golden ratio, shadow, relative size, ellipses, and lastly rule of thirds. Through these compositional tools, artists have the ability to put out their message and what they would want you to know. When composition is present in an artwork, elements and principles of design begin to appear.
Throughout the unit of composition, I have done a large amount of research on each compositional tool listed above. Along with these compositional tools, came along famous artists that were talented and specialized in a certain area/type of composition. Some of those artists include DeviantArt and Edward Munch, two very skilled artists that rose to fame due to their famous media created compositions. Through centuries and decades of building off the idea of composition, several artists took risks and began composing artworks that are one of the most valuable and expensive works of art today.

In conclusion, throughout these two examples of compositionally based artworks, several elements and principles are shown and created. Ultimately, through the use of one, two, and three perspective, notan, Fibonacci sequence, rule of thirds, golden ratio, relative size, and shadow they contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of an artwork. To create a well based artwork, one should use the fundamental compositional tools to enhance the overall look of the artwork.

Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Additionally, Lie placed tall trees in the foreground of the painting to give a sense of the scale between the observer’s perspective and surrounding objects. Furthermore, Lie used dark, cold colors, such as purple, blue and black, to depict the feeling of a winter’s afternoon. Lie also used snow on the ground as an obvious indicator of the time frame in which the painting is occurring. However, in contrast to the dark cold colors used, Lie also used subtle hints of orange, yellow and red to show that there is some presence of light in the piece. The background of the painting is a sheen of yellow, suggesting the presence of light and the forming sunset.
The visual elements in this painting are shape, color and light. The shapes and contours of the mother and child are life like.
At the left-bottom corner of the painting, the viewer is presented with a rugged-orangish cliff and on top of it, two parallel dark green trees extending towards the sky. This section of the painting is mostly shadowed in darkness since the cliff is high, and the light is emanating from the background. A waterfall, seen originating from the far distant mountains, makes its way down into a patch of lime-green pasture, then fuses into a white lake, and finally becomes anew, a chaotic waterfall(rocks interfere its smooth passage), separating the latter cliff with a more distant cliff in the center. At the immediate bottom-center of the foreground appears a flat land which runs from the center and slowly ascends into a cliff as it travels to the right. Green bushes, rough orange rocks, and pine trees are scattered throughout this piece of land. Since this section of the painting is at a lower level as opposed to the left cliff, the light is more evidently being exposed around the edges of the land, rocks, and trees. Although the atmosphere of the landscape is a chilly one, highlights of a warm light make this scene seem to take place around the time of spring.
The background of the painting is dark with hues of browns and reds. Light enters the painting from the left and can be seen on the tiled floor. The lighting helps to create the diagonal composition as it moves across the lower half of the painting. The contrast of light also creates space between the man and the woman fainting; symbolizing a disconnect between the two figures. The use of space is also interesting, Ahsauerus is alone and is enclosed in a corner, while Esther is being held by two other woman who are physically very close to her, not allowing any space between their clothes, suggesting a nurturing characteristic that is often stereotyped among

The painting is organized simply. The background of the painting is painted in an Impressionist style. The blurring of edges, however, starkly contrasts with the sharp and hard contours of the figure in the foreground. The female figure is very sharp and clear compared to the background. This painting consists of regular lines as well as implied lines. Some of the regular lines that have been included are flowing, curved lines, such as the Earth that the woman is sitting on top of. Additionally, the background is made of small scenes that have been outlined by a dotted line, which places emphasis on the scenes. Besides regular and visible lines, there are a few implied lines in this painting. For instance, the woman's eyes are looking forward, so there is an implied line to the audience. Additionally, another implied line would be the woman's right arm, which is pointed towards her headpiece, while her left arm is pointed towards the earth. Nonetheless, this painting is not intense; although it does have splashes of color, this painting does not have a bright saturation. Instead, this painting is slightly dull, which makes this painting appear vintage. William Sidney Mount and Francis Criss both used several elements and principles to capture the essence of each of their oil paintings. Each artist chose specific elements and principles in order to give the piece of art the effect that they wanted the viewer to see. While each artist painted a different setting and story, some of the same aspects were used to create both pieces of art. There are also differences that set them apart and make each painting a truly unique work of art. Each specific element and principle including linear aspects, focal point, value, and motion that is used by the artist in either The Card Players or City Landscape has the purpose of guiding the viewer through the artwork.
Today most art education programs are made up of four components. One of these components is art aesthetics. Aesthetics is the study of the nature of a piece of artwork. It analyzes the work by asking specific questions regarding the artist and the piece. The viewer becomes the judge in a sense. It tries to discover what the artwork might be representing. They could also ask what type of emotion the artist was trying to convey in their work. The viewer also takes part in analyzing the physical aspects and characteristics of the work. It focuses on the use of color, sequence and synchrony of an artwork. It notes the artist’s craftsmanship, artistic ability and proficiency in technique (Hoffman 1999).
Through these early stages of art discussed above, it shows how the foundation for today’s modern works was laid out. They show how art has developed from simple cave paintings, to the tremendous force in society that it is today.
